Introduction

We stayed on the island of Gran Canaria during the first three months of 2024. It’s the third Canary Island we’ve visited, after Tenerife and Lanzarote.

We rented an apartment in Temisas. By staying in the same place for such a long period, the total price dropped by 50%.

We also rented a vehicle to make getting around the island easier.

Why the Canary Islands, and Gran Canaria in particular? For its pleasant climate, the nature and diversity of its landscapes, the charming villages, and especially the beauty of its many beaches.

In this travel journal, you’ll find a list of the many activities we did during our stay to explore the different attractions of this island.

These attractions are categorized to make it easier to find what interests you.

Videos are included throughout the summary. Click on the image to start the video.

The 3.1-kilometer round-trip trail to this rock is a bit steep but easy to hike. However, it’s recommended to wear proper shoes and clothing for this adventure. Check the weather before starting this hike.

Roque Nublo is one of the most important symbols of Gran Canaria. This 80-meter-high stone monolith is located at over 1,800 meters above sea level in a protected natural area within the Biosphere Reserve.

Roque Nublo offers an exceptional panoramic view not only of the surrounding landscape but also of the famous Teide volcano on the island of Tenerife, which you can see on clear days.

There’s a kiosk near the main road, close to the trailhead, where you can grab something to drink or eat.

The Maspalomas Dunes are located in the south of the island. They are part of a 400-hectare special nature reserve that also includes a long, beautiful beach, a palm grove, and a brackish lagoon.

We did a 5.8-kilometer loop hike starting on the "Camino Verde" trail near the Las Dunas Viewpoint. This sandy trail is well-maintained and runs alongside the massive dunes, offering a stunning panoramic view.

At the end of the trail, we crossed the dried-up Maspalomas ravine and turned left onto Calle Oceania, which runs along the Charca de Maspalomas, a brackish lagoon where you can spot various waterbirds.

The view of the lagoon bordered by the dunes is breathtaking.

We then skirted the lagoon by walking along the beach, which is very pretty, and took the "Camino Azul" trail through the dunes to return to the Las Dunas Viewpoint.

These trails are easy to walk, except that hiking in the sand requires extra effort. It’s also worth noting that there’s no shade along these trails.

The Las Dunas Viewpoint, located behind the Riu Palace Hotel, is the perfect spot to admire the dunes at sunset.

LOS AZULEJOS DE VENEGUERA

27.92174, -15.72604 Parking 27.92174, -15.72535 Los Azulejos

Los Azulejos de Veneguera are rainbow-colored rocks. They’re also called Rainbow Rock.

These spectacular outcrops feature layers of different colors, visible due to erosion that removed the thick layer of lava that once covered them.

The colors result from chemical reactions that occurred as the lava cooled, caused by copper minerals in the volcanic rocks.

As the lava cooled, these minerals crystallized, creating the vibrant hues you can see today.

The GC-200 road winds through this area, offering stunning viewpoints of these incredible geological formations.

Barranco de las Vacas (Cow Ravine) is a truly unique natural site that reminds us of the famous Antelope Canyon we visited during a previous trip to the United States.

With the GPS coordinates mentioned above, you’ll easily find it. A short trail of about 300 meters crosses this stunning narrow ravine formed by erosion.

To access it, you’ll need to step over the safety barrier along the road and follow the trail down to the bottom of the ravine.

Next, you’ll go through the tunnel under the bridge. From there, it’ll only take a few minutes to reach this extraordinary spot.

It’s a must-see on Gran Canaria island, which is why you’ll find a lot of people there. It’s best to go early in the morning or late in the day if you want to avoid the crowds.

Ventana del Bentayga is a truly unique natural arch. It’s also known as Arco del Aserrador.

The trail leading to this arch starts on the opposite side of the parking area (GC-60 km 12). You’ll need to cross the road to access it.

At 3.4 kilometers round trip, this uphill trail isn’t easy to hike. At the beginning, there are markers, and it’s fairly easy to follow the trail until you reach a water reservoir (Presa de Elba).

After passing the reservoir, you’ll come to a junction where you need to turn left and look for a trail that goes straight up.

Cairns have been placed in certain spots to mark the route. Just look around to find them so you can stay on the trail.

Otherwise, there are several other paths you can take to reach the summit.

The climb is steep. Be careful! It’s best to go when the weather is dry. The trail becomes easier to follow once you reach the top of the mountain.

As you continue your hike, you’ll see the Ventana del Bentayga on the left side of the trail—it looks like a camel kissing an elephant.

You can walk under the arch, but be cautious, as there’s a drop of over 300 meters behind it.

The views are absolutely spectacular in every direction.

After spending some time exploring the area, we took the same route back to the parking lot.

The trail starts near the parking lot of the Mirador del Pico de las Nieves. This path descends toward Roque Nublo. However, to head toward Ventana de Morro, you need to turn left and follow a small path parallel to the paved road until you reach a mushroom-shaped rock.

You then need to pass to the left of the mushroom and head toward the cliff where you’ll see another window (hole) called Ventana de Gañifa.

From this spot, the panoramic views of Ventana del Morro and the town of Tunte (San Bartolomé de Tirajana) are spectacular.

The trail is short but has some rough sections, so caution is advised.

Acusa Seca is an archaeological site. You’ll find several caves carved into the mountainside, offering incredible views of the island’s two iconic rocks, Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga.

Some caves were built as troglodyte houses, and people can even rent one as accommodation.

However, if you’d like to visit the usual caves, just walk past the small troglodyte village and follow a trail that’ll take you along the mountainside, where you’ll come across many caves.

While some are inaccessible, others are at ground level, and you can go inside.

We visited a few caves and then turned back to return to the parking lot.

There are quite a few steps to descend, and the trail slopes downward, so you’ll have to climb back up on the way back. Bring water because the heat can be really overwhelming there.

FORTERESSE D'ANSITE

Location: 27.88309, -15.52830

The Fortaleza de Ansite is located in the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, near the center of Gran Canaria.

It houses a very important archaeological site. It consists of a group of natural caves that were inhabited by the aboriginal people of the Canary Islands until its conquest by the Kingdom of Castile in 1483.

These caves served as dwellings, storage spaces, and burial sites. A large number of ceramic objects, pottery, cave paintings, and tombs have been discovered here.

It is made up of a vertical outcrop divided into three large rock structures known as Fortaleza Grande, Fortaleza Chica, and Fortaleza de Abajo or Titana.

Fortaleza Grande features a large tunnel that connects the terrace, where the parking area is located, to the steep area where the caves are found.

We cross this tunnel to reach the other side of the mountain. The panoramic view of the Tirajana ravine is exceptional.

Numerous cave houses and natural caves have been built at the foot of the cliffs and on the slopes. Some of them have been turned into guesthouses.

Located 13 kilometers north of Maspalomas, Ayagaures is a small village at the foot of two successive dams: the Presa de la Angostura and the Presa de Gambuesa.

We left our vehicle in the small parking lot near the first dam and went on a 4-kilometer round-trip hike along the left bank of the watercourse.

The beginning of the route is on a paved road and then a dirt path, all the way to the Presa de Gambuesa.

After that, a narrow trail runs along the bank. The trail is very steep in some places, and there’s no protection, so caution is advised.

The scenery is really picturesque: ravine, high cliffs, traditional houses, and the emerald color of the water is truly spectacular.

The town of Santa Brígida is home to a significant number of centenary drago trees. Without a doubt, the most famous is the drago tree of Alonso Gorge or Pino Santo, as it’s also called.

This tree is one of the oldest and largest specimens of drago trees in the Canary Islands. With its twisted branches and massive trunk, the drago tree is a true natural spectacle.

Surrounded by lush vegetation and mountainous landscapes, the place exudes a truly peaceful atmosphere.

A trail runs through Alonso Gorge. The drago tree is located at the top of the cliff, 200 meters from the start of the trail.

However, you can continue the hike much further, as we did. The vegetation is very lush in this area.

HIKING IN AZUAJE GORGE

28.11019, -15.57122 Parking (but very limited) 28.10782, -15.57054 Start of the trail

Azuaje Gorge, located in the north of the island, serves as a geographical boundary between the municipalities of Firgas (70%) and Moya (30%).

There’s a good water flow year-round in this area. Thanks to this, its biological richness is incredible, making it one of the greenest—and thus one of the most beautiful—gorges on the island.

Since water flows through the gorge all year, there are sections where you’ll need to climb (with and without ropes). Additionally, the terrain is quite damp and, as a result, slippery in some spots. The trail is mostly easy, but keep in mind that you’ll need to walk on logs crossing the stream, climb certain areas by holding onto rocks, and tackle two sections using ropes.

For these reasons, it’s important to have good hiking shoes.

We hiked about 1.6 kilometers from the parking area and were able to admire several beautiful waterfalls along the trail.

There’s also a picnic area 500 meters from the parking spot if you’d like to take a break in a lush, green setting.

The condition of the trail will depend a lot on rainfall. Check the weather before heading out.

The Caldera de Bandama is actually a type of crater, but it’s called a caldera due to the volcanic collapse that formed when the volcano’s cone erupted around 2,000 years ago.

The caldera was first discovered by colonist Daniel Van Damme in the 16th century. You can even find some old ruins of wine cellars there.

It’s possible to hike around the elevated edges of the collapsed volcano and even descend to the bottom of the large crater dug into the ground.

We chose to hike to the top of the crater, which is about 3.5 kilometers long.

It’s considered a moderate hike because of the volcanic rocks that make the slopes slightly more challenging than ordinary trails. Otherwise, it’s relatively easy.

However, it’s best to wear good shoes.

The natural landscape around the caldera is stunning.

The Alamo Gorge Trail ("Sendero Barranco del Álamo") is located in Teror.

This loop trail, 4.3 kilometers long, is known for its staircases and was built to showcase the beauty of the Álamo Gorge and promote active tourism.

We parked our vehicle near the Fuente Agria de Teror and started this hike with a long staircase that runs alongside the neighborhood and leads to the El Muñigal bridge in the Alamo Gorge. You’ll find signs along the route.

The trail is easy to walk despite a few obstacles like rocks or tree trunks on the ground.

Some staircases are 4 meters high, and the steps are very narrow. Caution is advised.

The vegetation is lush, with different species of flowers decorating the path.

After passing under the La Molineta bridge, the trail leads us onto a secondary road. It then continues along a cliff, offering a very pretty panoramic view of the area.

This ±2.4-kilometer round-trip hike takes you along a very unique trail leading to the summit of Montaña Arinaga.

We parked our vehicle at the Arinaga Lighthouse, which we visited first, and then set off on this hike.

After walking a certain distance, we spotted a tunnel carved into the rock. It’s part of a large military infrastructure. We explored part of this tunnel, discovered a few rooms, and then turned back.

We then tackled a steep climb through a zigzagging trench that led us to a hole dug into the cliff. The entrance isn’t tall, but once inside, we found ourselves in a tunnel leading to a bunker.

We climbed out through the bunker’s window to continue our hike toward the summit.

This defense battery was built here during World War II, and the remains we see today include barracks, machine-gun nests, and an extensive network of tunnels.

At the summit, we enjoyed a stunning 360-degree view of the entire region. However, the wind was blowing very strongly.

For the return trip, we took a dirt path along the cliff and discovered other abandoned buildings belonging to this defense battery. Several graffiti pieces decorate the walls of the buildings.

We also spotted several caves along the way.

The Cueva de Sansón (Samson Cave) is located on the trail leading to the summit of Pico de La Atalaya, in the Montaña de Gáldar region. It’s a fascinating spot for hiking and exploration, offering breathtaking views and a glimpse of the island’s natural beauty.

In the year 1920, the first wooden cross was placed at the highest point of Pico de La Atalaya by a resident of the Atalaya neighborhood in Guía (Mrs. Romanita) as an offering to safeguard the life of her son, who had enlisted to fight in the war in Africa.

Later, a total of 14 crosses were erected, forming a place of worship known as the "Via Crucis" from the aforementioned neighborhood to the mountain’s summit, following a path on its northeast side.

Until a few years ago, the crosses were decorated by different families responsible for this task. Today, the tradition has faded, and the crosses have been abandoned.

On the northwest slope lies one of the island’s most impressive quarries, originally known in the early 20th century as the "piconera de Pepe Ojeda" or, more recently, as the "Grotte de Samsón" (Samson Cave, named for its enormous dimensions).

Once inside, we’re immersed in a world of shadow, light, and dizzying heights, where the sheer pleasure of the view contrasts with the grueling work these miners must have endured.

Moving deeper into the cave requires considerable effort because the ground is covered with small, rolling stones. However, the effort is rewarded by the stunning viewpoints we discover inside the cave.

This 5.2 km round-trip hiking trail crosses the protected landscape of the Agüimes mountains and lets us visit two archaeological sites: Morro del Cuervo and Morros de Ávila.

First, we stopped at the Cruz de Agüimes, located at the mountain's summit. From there, we had a stunning view of Agüimes, Ingenio, Roque Aguayro, and the entire southeast of the island.

Afterward, we headed to the archaeological site of Morro del Cuervo, where we could see some engravings on the cliff, including petroglyphs with human shapes. One of them is known as the "Man of Guayadeque."

We continued our hike to the second archaeological site, Morros de Avila. This site includes two caves, one of which features several paintings in the form of red and white triangles.
