What to see in Kotor?

Hi everyone,

I’m lucky enough to be going to Kotor in June as part of a company-organized trip.

I’ve looked into what’s interesting to see, but I could use some information.

1/ Where’s the best spot to get a view of the Bay of Kotor, given that I can’t make it to the amazing viewpoint at the top of Kotor (accessible by 1,400 steps) due to mobility issues?

2/ I’ve heard there are dolphins in the Bay of Kotor… but I can’t find anything about it. Is this true?

3/ I love nature, and I saw that there’s the Canyon and the "Niagara Falls" on the Cijevna River… but where are the best viewpoints to photograph them?

One last thing—are the roads to get there in good condition, or is it better to rent a 4x4?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Have a great weekend, everyone

Hi there, What mode of transportation are you using while there, and how many days are you staying in Montenegro? I just got back from a road trip in Montenegro by motorcycle. The roads are generally in great condition. Lots of construction between Kotor and Budva.

The trip is for one week.

There are two excursions planned:

1/ The Bay of Kotor and Kotor with a lunch stop in Perast and the church on the islet. 2/ Dubrovnik.

For the rest of the stay, we're considering renting a car for 2 or 3 days.

If you've taken any photos of the places I'm asking about, could you please post a few?

First, I need to dig up my photos [:P]

If you rent a car for 2-3 days, you’ll probably head to Cetinje and the Ostrog Monastery. In that case, the shortest route is to take the Serpentine Road. There are several spots where you can stop for amazing viewpoints (for example, look up Horizont Café View Point on Google Maps). A little higher up in Lovćen National Park, there are also viewpoints toward Tivat and Budva—I don’t remember exactly where.

On the north side of the Bay of Kotor, there’s a great viewpoint along the road above the village of Lipci (P11 road toward Nikšić and Bosnia). There’s also the Verige 65 bar—I wonder how much they had to pay to build in that spot!

If you go further south (Budva), the classic "postcard" view is Sveti Stefan. It’s a private, super expensive resort, but you can see it well from the beach or the road.

But generally, the views of the bay are stunning everywhere. In the late afternoon/sunset, the best spot is on the opposite side of Kotor (the village of Muo), while at sunrise, the best is on the east side (Risan/Perast/Kotor).

Thanks for the info.

Did you see the Niagara Falls of the Cijevna River?

No, I’ve only vaguely heard of it because of the name, but we didn’t really visit the Podgorica area.
