Hi, does anyone know if it’s necessary to have a return ticket to go to Mexico? I’d like to go there—I’ve bought a one-way ticket and plan to cross the border by bus to Guatemala. I’m worried they won’t let me board the plane if I don’t have a return ticket. Ed

Like all the answers to this question that’s been asked so many times: YES, get a return or onward ticket. Of course, most people will tell you they’ve never been asked, but now it’s true that airlines more often ask how long you’re staying and if you have proof of onward travel... even if it’s still rare. But hey, if you don’t get one, you risk not being allowed to board. And I’ll add that a bus ticket IS NOT CONSIDERED valid proof of leaving the country.

Hi, Yes, an outbound flight ticket is required. They may ask for it either when you depart or upon arrival in Mexico. Sometimes neither, but be aware that if they ask for it at check-in and you don’t have one, you’ll be denied boarding, and if they ask for it upon arrival, you’ll be denied entry and put on the first flight back to France. Otherwise, you take the risk, and if they ask for the return ticket when departing, you can buy a flight on the spot to Guatemala, for example, via your phone—same upon arrival—but I don’t recommend this solution, as it can end up being quite expensive on top of everything else.
