It’s been two years now since no one teases me about my perception of trips to India... since no one tries to drag me to the Indian restaurants in Nice anymore... and that should satisfy me, but deep down, it sometimes leaves me with a bitter taste of nostalgia—of jokes and unfinished conversations, of places I no longer set foot in, telling myself that maybe... one day, not like any other, I’ll hear a familiar burst of laughter around a corner in Old Nice...

It’s tough accumulating memories, especially as you get older...... (that last "sentence" must be cracking him up up there.....)......

I never knew him—he left just as I arrived. But I was captivated, fascinated by his stories (just like those from Naps or others on VF). In a magazine this week covering the journeys of a few adventurers, I came across this thought from an "extreme" guide that fits him pretty well: "Adventure is having stories others don’t. And knowing how to tell them." If there’s an afterlife, I’ll be a traveler there too. Safe travels.

I really enjoyed reading your travel story about North Korea. The news of your passing brought tears to my eyes, even though I didn’t know you personally. I’ll read your other stories while thinking of you, your family, and your friends. Rest in peace.

Yangguizi, I wish you could read these few words for your 35th birthday: "happy birthday." (Even if I’m writing them a little late—November 4th was yesterday).

Here’s the first message of the year 2011 for Patrick. We exchanged a few messages a few years ago. Your stories were a real treat for me! I never stopped coming back to your page to see if you had any other adventures to share—I just didn’t understand your absence... And it’s only today that I discovered this post dedicated to you... I’m in shock... What will become of all your beautiful stories... They deserve to be published! I wonder if your loved ones have thought about it, unless the pain is still too raw.

We won’t forget you, Patrick!

Same feeling here 🏴‍☠️ I only knew him through his writing—I read his travel journal on North Korea and Munich, and started the one on China 7 years earlier. Knowing these stories are finite and cut short so suddenly is really heartbreaking... I hope he left happier than on any other trip...

Thanks to those who allowed me to read about the trip to North Korea. It's mind-blowingly real. I wasn't expecting anything better. I've traveled a lot, and it reminds me of some parts of China. I'm not here to judge—every country has its customs—but still!!! France is beautiful, and life here is pleasant, even if we're terrible grumblers, we live very well here. Annesorya

On this anniversary day, a Native American prayer:

Don’t go to my grave to weep, I’m not there, I don’t sleep, I am the thousand winds that blow, I am the snowflakes’ sparkling glow, I am the sunlight on the golden grain, I am the gentle autumn rain, I am the birds that wake in morning’s hush, I am the star that shines in the night. Don’t go to my grave to weep, I’m not there. I’m not dead.

Thanks Danielle for reminding us of this sad anniversary. I was in Quito and couldn’t believe it—my eyes filled with sadness, I struggled to reply, I could barely see my keyboard.

Patrick, you’re often in my thoughts; rereading your stories always puts me in a good mood. You’re not far away, but what outfit have you put on today to talk to us?

On this anniversary day, a Native American prayer:

Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there; I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die.

This is certainly the journey we all dream of taking one day... the one his friends feel from time to time when he comes to visit them... no doubt he’s at peace and must be laughing at us debating on this forum. He must miss not being able to come and add his two cents... 🙂 See you soon...

Damn, 2008—already 3 years... phew, it’s tough!

Hugs to my fellow travelers and especially to you, Pat!

I would’ve definitely loved to have known him and worked in the same firm. I once had Bignon Lebray on the line and got this wild idea to ask them if Mr. Yangguizi was as missed in Shanghai as he is on this forum... Yes, inevitably, words like China, Iran, Korea, or Uganda make me think of him too. His words had to carry real weight to leave such a lasting impression on strangers.

Hi Fred71, hi everyone.

Thank you for this tribute to Patrick.

The community has lost a great forum member, a writer in his spare time (which was plentiful), and also an avid reader, as he never hesitated to jump into countless discussions, always with his humor and sharp wit.

My thoughts go out to his family, his loved ones, and those for whom Patrick’s absence leaves an indelible mark in their memories.

January 16, 2005, Patrick started his amazing account of his trip to North Korea, and today I often reread his wonderful writings, full of humor, details, and all those traces of Patrick who is still in our memories. And I hope that wherever he is, he can buy Kim pins and listen to North Korean military music over a good meal served by pretty young waitresses. Mom isa

Hello,

unforgettable.

Yes.

His memory is indelibly linked to:

1/ *Water Music* by TC Boyle. I had stopped reading it a few pages from the end, not feeling up to seeing Mungo Park die in Africa that day. When I opened VF, a message from Kars had informed me of Patrick’s passing, in Africa. Since then, whenever I pick up the book from the shelf and laugh while rereading excerpts, I think of "Yangguizi," imagining that Boyle’s humor would have resonated with him.

2/ Nice. It was a completely insignificant city. Now, whenever I drive along its ring road, I mentally lay a flower on his grave.
