..... and still that same big, blissful smile seeing from his little cloud these signs of friendship over the years that keep his memory alive .... he would’ve hated that, but it does let us highlight his beloved Korea from time to time .... so yeah, he’s having a good laugh up there ....

" You won your bet ..... I finally went to India, no one had the nerve to keep up that talent for irritating me like you could about that country, and in the end, the tigers let me glimpse in their eyes that closeness of reunion .... "

One day, an urge .... a stopover, just once to know what real travel feels like ....

See you soon ....

Thanks Olivier .....

When we used to have lunch together in Nice ..... at one of those Indian restaurants he loved taking me to as soon as he knew it would annoy me ..... he’d talk about everything, even that one-way trip he’d mention, and despite all we’d share, that we’d all be *bound* to take at least once in our lives ...... and even VF wouldn’t be any use for sharing that experience since no one had ever come back to post any great tips ..... 😉 “You’d have heard about it by now,” he’d say ......

It’s true, he hasn’t come back to this thread to tell us how it is ...... and just for that, we’ve got to leave the door open, just in case .....

Hi there,

Patrick! I’m thinking of you during this time—well, actually, I think of you often, especially because of that other guy from North Korea, but also every time I remember Shanghai... The flame and the ideas remain, and that’s what really matters!

Hello, It’s been five years already since Patrick left us. Through your messages, I know his memory is still very much alive, and I’m always deeply touched by that. Many Voyage Forum members wanted to see his travel journals published, especially the one about North Korea. A Voyage Forum member, Ilivic—a seasoned traveler himself—has just launched his own publishing house, *Histoires d'un monde*. http://voyageforum.com/v.f?post=5853435&auto_login=1. He asked me to publish Patrick’s travel journals, and we’ve decided to start with the one about North Korea. If you’re interested in this journal, you can reach out to Ilivic at: histoiresdunmonde at gmail.com For those of you in the Nice area, Ilivic and I would be happy to present the book on Saturday, September 14th, starting at 2 PM at the Amnesty House, 36 rue Gioffredo in Nice.

Hi Nicole,

I have a copy of the book in my hands—it really means a lot to me. My only regret is that there isn’t a short bibliography of Patrick or any mention of voyageforum.com. Still, I want to thank you and Louis for this work!

While researching my upcoming trip to Uganda on VF, I came across the post about Patrick’s travel preparations. (Which is exactly where I am now...)

So I wanted to check out his travel journal on his profile, and that’s when I learned the news, five years later...

I didn’t know him, but it really hit me hard.

May he rest in peace, and my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones...

RIP Patrick Yangguizi

I’ve been following this post for a long time and only rarely participate these days. I’m sorry, but the forum is about travel in general, and it’s really missing a section—not necessarily an "obituary" for members, but rather a space where people can share if they fall ill during their travels or at home. Some disappear or live with illnesses that wear them down or are terminal in the medium to long term. For example, I’ve always traveled and still do, even though I’m very ill now. I keep traveling and planning trips, but "death" is always with me. Other travelers on the site could share how hard it is to stay motivated and how they keep living with the fear of not being here anymore... etc

The members are still here, probably less active because they don’t have the youthful energy you all do. But there’s no birthday when I don’t come back here, remembering Patrick, who left too soon, too early, taking with him so much freshness in his stories, so much humor, enthusiasm, truth, and sincerity.

How could we miss this meet-up he asked us never to forget... November 4th?

Friendly thoughts to all travelers following this post.

Thanks, Julie, for bringing this post back up.

I printed out some of our late Patrick "Yangguizi"’s stories. I reread the one about Iran from time to time, always with emotion—the same emotion I felt when I heard about his passing, on an evening when I was in Ecuador. Such a sad night.

Let’s not forget him.

An alleyway in Istanbul, Hocapasa Street, a slightly shabby hotel, a few portraits of North Korean leaders spread out on the lobby’s low tables, a few steps in Gülhane Park, and a photo of a smiling, happy couple—an Adana kebab in Eyüp, where life’s delicious indulgence spares no one. The years fly by too quickly, but the connections, the laughter, and the incredible conversations remain, tucked away like a precious little madness.

Does Lepiaf miss them... or does Jean-Pierre?
CA CatherineGil Globetrotter ·
These two personalities are missed by everyone who crossed paths with them on VF, and even more so by those who knew them personally. They’re missed on VF too.

It seems to me that if Lepiaf (Jean-Pierre) referred to them by their first names, it was a way to connect with them as people—to soften the distance that a username inevitably creates.

This thread doesn’t seem like the best place for verbal acrobatics.

ME Mensonge ·
Hello.

I didn’t know the guy, but I really wish I had… Same age, life in Nice (a bit), same passion for travel and Asia, apparently a lot of humor (not me, him ;)). I’m sad. Damn MAM...

I don’t believe he’s watching us from the sky or anything like that. I’m posting this because, selfishly, I feel like it—a testament to a kind of respect for his way of life, which, through his writing, seems to be what I aspire to.

Yangguizi, if everything goes as I hope, you must be around 8 years old, living in the Middle Kingdom, and speaking Mandarin… and already wanting to visit France (and other countries)—it’s trendy over there. 😄

Thanks, buddy, for the travel journals. They’re still just as amazing, and I think I’ll re-read them my whole life.

Nothing is lost—maybe in another life!

I just signed up and discovered his travel journal in Iran—a real pure delight (rich rhyme with "laughter"), and then I’m told he passed away... 9 years ago! Seriously, what a shock! His journal is so full of life! I know I’ll still enjoy the other journals, but it won’t feel the same... 😕 Pissed at this *** luck that takes the best of us in our thirties. Not funny.
