South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini Itinerary

Hi there, In two months, I’m heading off for 4 weeks with three backpacker friends to South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini. We’ve got our round-trip flight tickets from France to Johannesburg and plan to drive from Johannesburg to Cape Town and back to Johannesburg in an SUV or 4x4. For other city trips, we’ll use local transport or Uber. That’s the plan for our transportation.

For the car rental, I’d like to know which company to book with. Can anyone give me some tips on renting a vehicle and crossing into Lesotho and Eswatini?

Next, I’ve put together a rough itinerary that seems good to me, but could you share your experiences and maybe point out any mistakes I’ve made?

Day 1: Arrival in Johannesburg Day 2: Johannesburg (city tour) Day 3: Johannesburg to Cape Town (old town) Day 4: Cape Town (Table Mountain) Day 5: Cape Town (Robben Island + port) Day 6: Cape Town (peninsula: Boulders Beach, Cape of Good Hope) Day 7: Cape Town to Stellenbosch to Franschhoek Day 8: Franschhoek to Greyton to Genadendal to Montagu Day 9: Montagu to Swellendam Day 10: Swellendam to Overberg Day 11: Overberg Day 12: Overberg to George (Garden Route) to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) Day 13: Gqeberha to Queenstown to Aliwal North Day 14: Aliwal North to Lesotho (Maseru) Day 15: Lesotho Day 16: Lesotho to Drakensberg Day 17: Drakensberg Day 18: Drakensberg to Durban to St. Lucia Day 19: St. Lucia Day 20: St. Lucia to Eswatini Day 21: Eswatini Day 22: Eswatini to Kruger Day 23: Kruger Day 24: Kruger Day 25: Kruger to Blyde Canyon Day 26: Blyde Canyon to Johannesburg Day 27: Johannesburg Day 28: Johannesburg to France

That’s the plan. Of course, it’d be perfect, but some spots probably deserve more time, while others might be less interesting. I hope you can help me fine-tune this route.

Thanks in advance for your patience and great advice.

Cheers,

Didier

Hello,

The program seems to be focused on urban/peri-urban areas. Is that intentional? We’d need to know more about what you’re looking for (hiking? history? landscapes? wildlife? meeting locals? ...???). The desert part isn’t mentioned—is there no interest in that type of landscape?

Personally, I’d cut a few nights in Joburg and Eswatini, and one in Cape Town. I’d spend more time in Lesotho, a country that’s way more fascinating than Eswatini. Just my first impressions while we wait to hear what the group of four is interested in.

For the car, the route is classic. Depending on the stops in Lesotho, a 4x4 might not be necessary at first glance.

For the rental, compare the cost with the price of the authorization letters for Lesotho and Eswatini (they need to be requested at the same time as the booking, and not all companies allow these countries—or at least not for all vehicle categories)—plus the drop-off fee.

I’ve only had issues with Hertz, but that was a while ago.

Happy planning! !

Airone’s, Bof’s, and Michel85200’s travel journals on this forum are also a goldmine of information!

Hi Attila, Thanks for your quick replies. No, this isn’t an urban-focused trip—quite the opposite, in fact. I mentioned the cities just to make the itinerary easier to visualize. For us, travel is all about landscapes, meeting people, and of course, for this trip specifically, it’s about the animals. I agree with you—the Lesotho looks really interesting. I’ll check out the blogs you recommended. Thanks. Best, Didier

Based on your latest details, I feel the wildlife aspect isn’t very developed in this itinerary. One extra night in Kruger and a park focused on landscapes/animals like Mountain Zebra, Karoo NP, or iMfolozi would help.

For cultural encounters, I think Lesotho could offer more exchanges and a chance to discover a different way of life. A night in Soweto would also be great. Staying in the wildlife park camps can also be an opportunity to chat with South Africans.

For landscapes, the Drakensberg, the Great Karoo, and the Cederberg are roughly on the planned route.

I’d spend fewer days on the Garden Route to explore the less touristy inland areas, which have a lot of charm.

A direct flight to Cape Town would streamline the trip and save time.

For a group of four, I think renting a car in the city will be cheaper than using public transport/taxis. It’s also more practical. It’s an American-style country—everything is designed for cars.

Hi Agnes, In my itinerary, I’ve planned to fly from Johannesburg to Cape Town to save time. I’m buying the tickets today. As for the animals, I’ll take your advice into account, but I’m not sure how to fit it in—my schedule’s already packed.

Hi Didier,

If the international flight is already booked, then a domestic flight will definitely be needed. My advice was only relevant if it hadn’t been.

When it comes to the route, it’s all about making trade-offs.

Why go here instead of there? Take a good look at all the possible options and see what appeals most to the four of you.

Imfolozi is on the route you initially chose.

For the others, you’d need to adjust the stops.

Personally, the Garden Route has never really appealed to me, but it’s all about individual tastes.

That’s why I think reading travel journals from different authors can help with making decisions.

Hopefully, that’s the case—otherwise, it’s worse when everything sounds amazing! !🤪

Hi there,

I agree with Mrs. Attila. I’d skip Joburg and the areas around PE... same for the Franschhoek-Montagu stretch, etc. I’d rather draw a straight line toward Lesotho, even if it means spending two nights in MZ, for example. Or take the coastal route. Also, save time to extend your stay in Lesotho and the Drakensberg...

You can indeed move a bit faster between Cape Town and Lesotho. You mentioned that landscapes are important to you: in that case, you should take a detour into the Klein Karoo (Swartberg Pass) instead of sticking to the coast. And if you need to save days for wildlife in the parks, from Lesotho I’d head straight to Kruger—it’ll fill your boots and save you the detour via iSimangaliso and the crossing through Eswatini. (Michel, how do you say "don’t hit" in Zulu? 😉)

Hi Agnès, Michel and Jean-Luc, First off, a big thank you to all three of you for helping me plan my trip. It’s done—we’ve booked an early flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town on 12/03, which already saves us more than a day. Next, I’ll be taking your advice to shape the rest of the trip, spending less time on the first part, especially the Garden Route, which, aside from some beautiful beaches, doesn’t seem all that interesting, in favor of Lesotho and the Drakensberg. That said, Zululand does seem worth it. From St. Lucia, it looks pretty straightforward and nice to reach Kruger via Swaziland. Today, I’ll look into renting a car. For all these roads and tracks, is it essential to rent a 4x4, or will an SUV do, or even a regular car? Thanks! Best, Didier

It all depends on the route, especially in Lesotho.

Most routes in South Africa can be done with a regular car, but some spots in Lesotho require a 4x4.
