Which airline for Paris-Tokyo in business class?

Hi there,

My daughter, wife, and I are starting to plan a two-week trip to Japan for... April 2026. My wife wants us to really treat ourselves, so we’re considering business class (we usually fly premium economy or even economy). Since we’re departing from Paris and want a direct flight, we have three options: JAL, ANA, or Air France.

I’ve flown Air France in business quite a bit for work, and I do find it very comfortable. But I wonder if I’m just defaulting to a national bias—maybe the other two airlines have advantages I’m not considering.

If I’m looking at criteria like: - Comfort (especially for sleeping) - Meals - Entertainment

Any advice? Personal experiences? Have any of the three airlines updated their business class on this route recently?

Thanks! !

Hi there,

According to the latest global business class rankings of the top 25 airlines:

Japan Airlines is 7th ANA is 14th Air France is 21st (best airline for Western Europe)

After that, it’s really a matter of personal preference and price. For April 2026, you’ll have to wait until May to start seeing the fares.
Cordialement, Patrick.

Thanks Patrick,

I’d seen that ranking, but business-class cabins vary depending on the route. I’d love to hear from anyone who’s taken one of these flights recently ;)

Air France in business class for your trip with your wife would be a great choice

Hello,

Have you checked out the Flight-Report website? There are user experiences with photos.

Thanks. I didn’t know about it. I found reviews on AF and ANA there. It’s making me want to go even more!

Hi there,

If price isn’t your main concern: 1. JAL 2. Emirates

I’ve flown with both in business class, though it’s been a while. But I’ve never actually been to Japan! Another great airline is Singapore Airlines, but it probably won’t work for your route. I’ve flown first class twice with Air France and Lufthansa, but I found Singapore Airlines better than both in business class.

Paris-Tokyo I don’t know, but for Paris-Osaka and back, the Air France business class trip—I can only recommend it. Everything was perfect.

Hi, For the price difference, business class really needs to be worth it, and the child should be "old enough" to enjoy it—but that’s just my personal opinion. 3 round-trip business class tickets usually run around 15 to 20 k€, I think (unless you’re using reward points). Maybe a bit less if it’s not a direct flight, but the appeal of business class loses some of its charm with a layover. It’s really a personal choice, and everyone spends their money how they want, but for an 11-hour flight (with part of it spent sleeping), I’d rather put that budget toward the trip itself. Still, the magic of Air France on long-haul flights—even if it’s changed a bit—remains irreplaceable to me.

Hello,

maybe a little less if it's not direct, but the appeal of business class loses some of its meaning with a layover.

I’d say the opposite: with a layover, you get twice the in-flight services, twice the lounge access, and often the chance for a stopover in luxury hotels—not to mention it usually earns you way more miles. For 20 or 30% cheaper. For three people, it’s more like 7,000 or 8,000 €, much less than you mentioned. Plus, with extra fees, it’s even more appealing not to depart from France—bonus for customs and immigration too.

Ah yes, I hadn’t thought about the lounge aspect and the hotel possibly being included. Good point from Tatra (as usual). For the prices, it’s definitely less than what I was quoting.

Oh yeah, I hadn’t thought about the lounge aspect and the hotel that might be included. Good point from Tatra (as usual). For prices, it’s probably less than what I mentioned.

Actually, departures from CDG in business class are often very expensive, and it’s not going to get any better. Even for flying with Air France, it might be worth looking for the departure flight in another European country—though I’m not sure how the surcharge is calculated in that case. Without even considering mainland Chinese airlines like China Eastern, Air China, or Southern, you could look at Cathay, Etihad, Finnair/JAL codeshare, Austrian, or Vietnam Airlines. I’m ruling out Air India, but it’s an option too. All the ones I mentioned are possible in May or June for under 3000 € from CDG, AMS, BRU, FRA, or BUD. But I know these aren’t the starting parameters for this discussion, which is focused on direct flights from CDG, specifically on AF, ANA, and JAL.

For prices, it’s definitely less than what I was showing.

No, on the contrary, the range was accurate. A Paris-Tokyo round-trip in business class is between 5000 and 6000 €. Even with a dozen stopovers, I don’t see how you could fly three people in business for that price...

Hello,

Even with a dozen stopovers, I don’t see how you could fly 3 people in business for that price...

It’s not very complicated to run a flight search engine to get an idea. Let’s take next May, Paris to Tokyo... Departure on the 7th, return on the 21st... China Eastern 2295 €, LOT Polish 3270 €. Let’s take June... Departure on the 4th, return on the 18th... China Eastern 2295 €, Finnair JAL 2647 €, Etihad 3253 €, even ANA 3715 €. 7000 € is the minimum, but under 10000 € total, it’s perfectly findable.

And as I mentioned, there are advantages in terms of stopovers, lounges, fast tracks, stopovers, miles. Or disadvantages depending on the passenger’s subjectivity.

But hey, if the plan is direct, Paris-Tokyo, AF, ANA, or JAL, with no date flexibility, you’re rarely under 4000 €.

Michel

PS: I quickly checked London for the same June dates—there’s a bunch of Chinese airlines around 2500 € (Air China, China Eastern, Southern). Budapest has Austrian for 2693 €, Brussels offers Etihad for 2763 €... Frankfurt is similar.

Thanks for your replies.

I’m looking at flights for about a year from now. I’m planning ahead to keep the cost down. So far, I’ve found ANA to be the cheapest (around 11,000 € for the three of us). Air France is more like 15,000–16,000 €.

That’s why I was wondering if the service is comparable.

And since we’re leaving from Tours, it’s hard to consider any other departure airport than Paris

I’ve only been to Tokyo once in business class (an upgrade), and it was on ANA, actually.

It was exceptional. I slept from start to finish (gotta admit, being perfectly stretched out makes it easier), so I couldn’t take advantage of the unlimited room service (Western and Japanese cuisine!).
TA Tatra Globetrotter ·
Good evening,

Discussing business class services is always quite tricky; on one hand, you have passengers who are very used to it, very demanding, who won’t be impressed by anything and will even be harsh in their judgment, and on the other hand, those who only do it rarely or very rarely, and who’ll find it dazzling. All that for the same service. On top of that, you need to pay close attention to the aircraft scheduled, and keep in mind that it can always be changed at the last minute for a cabin with a very different configuration. In my opinion, the best thing to do is to check out "flight reports" and videos on YouTube to try to get an idea. I’ve never flown long-haul in business on these airlines—once on ANA but on a domestic flight—but reputation-wise, they’re all excellent. Maybe ANA is a notch above, but these are three airlines that have first class, so business is just their second-tier luxury offering. ANA generally uses 787s, AF usually 777s, like JAL. And everyone flies to Haneda.

Regarding prices, subscribe to the newsletters of the airlines you're targeting, as they sometimes offer promotions. We flew with AF last winter to Abu Dhabi in their new cabin—really nice in a 1-2-1 layout with privacy doors. We booked AF Business flights from Lyon for this summer, paying less than 2000 € in October. Now, those same tickets are at 4500 €. Sometimes, it’s worth departing from another European city—we found tickets for under 1800 € from Rome, Copenhagen, Dublin, or Stockholm. Just make sure to allow plenty of time or even take the opportunity to visit one of these cities.
