Hi there, We’re planning a 3-week trip in late September with our camper van to explore Bulgaria and Romania. What routes would you recommend, starting from the South? Is there an option to take a ferry in Italy, and is it worth it? Thanks for all your tips!😊

hi! saying "from the south" is a bit vague... which countries will you cross to get to Bulgaria? Otherwise, there’s probably a ferry between Brindisi in Italy and Igoumenitsa in Greece. Then in Romania, you’ll obviously want to head to the Danube Delta, starting from Tulcea. Just a heads-up—you can only get there by boat! 🙂 Finally, three weeks might be a bit tight for sightseeing.

The most direct and also the fastest route to Bulgaria is: Turin, Milan, Venice, Trieste, Belgrade, Sofia.

Hey 😊 For a 3-week van trip, I’d keep it to a simple loop to avoid too many kilometers. Coming in from the south, I’d head to Bulgaria first—Melnik, Rila, Plovdiv, then Veliko Tarnovo, and maybe the coast toward Nessebar or Varna. After that, I’d head up to Romania: Brașov, Sibiu, Sighișoara, and a bit of Transylvania. Honestly, I wouldn’t add much more, or it’ll start feeling too much like a road trip. Since January 1, 2025, Romania and Bulgaria are fully in Schengen, so crossing between them by land is easier than before.

As for the ferry, yeah, it might be worth it if you want to skip a long drive. There’s no direct ferry from Italy to Bulgaria on the routes listed by Ferry Hopper, but Bari connects to Igoumenitsa in Greece and Durrës in Albania. The Igoumenitsa-Bari route runs year-round with 1–2 crossings per day, taking around 8h30. Bari-Durrës is also year-round, with daily departures and a trip of about 8h. With a van, I think the ferry’s really only worth it if you’re already near southern Italy or want to cut down on driving fatigue. To plan the route a bit, I found this, this, and this helpful.

Hi there! Sorry for the late reply—I didn’t get any email alerts 😅 Thanks for the tips; that’s the route we’ll take starting from Marseille. Have a great day!

Hi there, Sorry for the late reply—I didn’t get any email alerts 😅 Thanks so much for all the route tips and discoveries! We’ll be leaving from Marseille via Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, and finally Bulgaria... We’re used to driving a lot, but this year we’re not really feeling up to it, especially since our 20-year-old cat will be joining us on the trip... I’ll definitely keep this route in mind, and if we don’t have time for Romania, we’ll be back 😊😊 Have a great day! Odile
