This is the vast desert region that occupies over a third of Tunisia in the south, bordering Algeria and Libya. Sparsely populated outside a few towns and oases, the area is synonymous with dunes and camel rides, though in many places the reality is also one of arid, rocky landscapes where you can hike or explore by 4x4.
Overview

This is the vast desert region that occupies over a third of Tunisia in the south, bordering Algeria and Libya. Sparsely populated outside a few towns and oases, the area is synonymous with dunes and camel rides, though in many places the reality is also one of arid, rocky landscapes where you can hike or explore by 4x4.
Warning: Some areas in the (far) south of Tunisia, near the Algerian and Libyan borders, are currently not recommended for security reasons by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Main towns
Beyond Gafsa, which marks the boundary between the north and south of the country, the Saharan region has few large towns or oases. Tataouine, Douz, Nefta, and Tozeur are the main population centers, with an average of 20,000 to 30,000 inhabitants.
