Thanks so much! 🙂 You’re gonna have an amazing trip—are you planning to write a travel journal when you get back? I need to start prepping for my next trip to China 😉

I’ve written 4 travel journals on this forum but stopped... I have a travel blog now on "myatlas". The link should be on my profile, I think. No doubt this next trip to China will be on there. 😇

I came back with a respiratory virus that I still haven’t completely shaken off a month after returning,

Oh no, I hope the virus clears up quickly now and doesn’t leave any lasting effects.

but I’m so happy about this trip! It was absolutely stunning, even better than I’d hoped for!! I loved it—it’s the most beautiful trip I’ve ever taken, and that’s saying something after Laos, which I thought was unbeatable.

A huge thank you, Vilabel, for this travel journal—it really makes me want to go! So many beautiful landscapes 😊. When we finally decide to take the plunge, I’ll definitely come back to this journal for all its great tips and discoveries. Thanks again!

And finally, for the attentive reader(s), I’ll just say that my old sandals held up until the very end! Haha 😉

Awesome! Conclusion: Always pack old shoes when you travel 😁

Hi Vilabel, And thank you for this travel journal that really transported me to a country I know very little about. But I’ll have to change that! 😉

Good evening,

Thanks for your travel journal—it transported me back to September 2003.

My first trip to China, but I arrived via Hong Kong. What a shock!

Then came Guangzhou, which I wanted to escape from the moment I stepped onto a platform in the middle of nowhere where the public ferry from what was practically still the "British colony" at the time had docked.

And then, like you, I headed to Yangshuo, where I completely fell in love with China and the Chinese people.

A quick two-day detour to admire the terraced rice fields of Ping'an, which don’t quite measure up to those in Yuanyang (Yunnan), but that’s another trip a few years later.

A little further north begins the China of ethnic minorities, starting with the Dong (I’m crazy about the Dong) and their Wind and Rain Bridge. The Chéngyáng Bridge is a true gem (not to mention the drum tower in the village).

From there, I turned west, saving Fenghuang, Zhangjiajie, and Chongqing for a future trip.

A little tip for those who’d like to follow your itinerary: from Zhangjiajie, head to Yichang, where you can board a three-day cruise through the still-fabulous Yangtze gorges to arrive in Chongqing. I think you missed the city’s iconic "monument": its cable car.

But once again, thank you so much for your glimpse of a small part of China 😉
