This day is a bit of a leap into the unknown.

I mistakenly thought the road to Kazarman was paved and that I’d then have to take a dirt track to reach Jalal-Abad.

I have to say, I never plan my trips in great detail—just the general route, accommodations, and a few specific hikes or visits.

So, I only realize the night before that there’s no pavement...

For the Kazarman-Jalal-Abad stretch, the RAV4 rental guy told me the new road built by the Chinese was open.

A quick internet search mentions landslides due to bad weather, but I can’t pinpoint where they are at first.

Phew! It’s on another section of this route!

The Chinese engineers planned their route without accounting for all the terrain’s quirks.

The road is regularly cut off due to cliff collapses or floods washing away bridges.

On this newly opened stretch, avalanches are the main danger.

Some infrastructure is still under construction, but since it won’t be ready for winter, the road will close when the snow comes...

As for fuel, various online opinions assure me there’s 95 octane in Kazarman.

We’ll see! Anyway, since the new road is open, we should have more than enough to reach the first gas stations near Jalal-Abad.

That is, if we don’t floor it...

Enough chatter—let’s hit the road!

Kazarman is just a few kilometers away now, and the dirt and gravel give way to pavement.

I cross my fingers for the 95 octane and get a little worried when I see the gas station.

It’s not exactly state-of-the-art!

But no matter—it’s there!

Relieved, we head toward the famous North-South Highway.

"Highway" might be overstating it—it’s just a simple two-lane road...

The toll isn’t operational yet, trucks aren’t allowed on it, and the route is sometimes a bit messy with all the ongoing construction.

The tunnel is as gloomy as a hospital corridor—hardly the road trip of the century...

But it saves time, and we wouldn’t have wanted to add 150 kilometers of dirt roads to the 130 we’ve already done.

We finally enter the outskirts of Jalal-Abad, the country’s third-largest city with an estimated 120,000 inhabitants.

Oh, car washes!

Should we give the 4x4 a makeover?

It takes long minutes of spraying and pink foam to restore some shine to the vehicle, then a good fifteen minutes to clean the inside...

Ahhh! Now we can slam the doors without getting covered in dust, see through the rear window, take photos through the windshield, and breathe in that fresh scent inside!

Now, if we could just find the hotel...

We struggle a bit to locate it.

MapsMe leads us astray this time, while Google Maps has the right coordinates.

One’s for use outside cities, the other inside...

The room has all the comforts: AC, fridge, spacious bathroom, comfy beds, and it’s quiet with a view of the courtyard.

A great deal! Cheaper than yesterday’s dive...

Jalal-Abad, on the other hand, doesn’t have much to offer besides its heat.

I thought we’d find plenty of restaurants to break the monotony.

Maybe, but not near the hotel!

How about Indian?

Sure, let’s go for Indian!

The restaurant is more like a cafeteria, and its customers are foreign students craving food from home.

The staff are also Indian, and the menu is only in English—a language the employees speak too.

The food is excellent but *very* spicy.

At 6 € for two, it’s a steal!

Hi everyone, I’m joining in too—especially since I’m actually leaving mid-August with my daughter (our first father-daughter trip) for Bishkek. Our highlight is the World Nomad Games from August 31 to September 6! No car rental for us. We’ll be using public transport, maybe some hitchhiking, and a 4-day horse trek... I’m going to savor your travel journal now—all the early comments and reactions are so tempting and full of good vibes!

It's a bit hot this morning, isn't it?

The AC’s not working, can’t turn on the lights, no power in the neighborhood!

The cook tells us she can’t boil water or cook eggs, so we’ll have to make do with bread, jam, and biscuits...

The credit card’s useless too, so we start pulling out some cash when the electricity comes back!

It’s only when you don’t have something that you realize how essential the things you take for granted really are.

Today’s leg involves crossing almost the entire country to its southern border.

Another nearly 300 kilometers to cover, but at least it’s all paved this time.

The Lenin Peak is worth the effort!

We also make a detour to visit the wonders of Uzgen—a minaret and mausoleums dating back to the medieval era.

The local Christo wannabe has been here too, and we regret the kilometers we drove just to see some sheet metal.

We’re now in the Ferghana Valley, a very fertile and densely populated agricultural plain.

The fields are yellow and dry, and it’s stifling.

We can’t wait to get back to the mountains.

The road is pretty busy—it’s a major route to Tajikistan and especially China, the start of the Pamir Highway.

There are quite a few cargo trucks, which makes the climb up the Chyiyrchyk Pass (2,400 m) a bit annoying.

The climate’s more pleasant, though, and the landscapes regain their charm!

We’re now in sight of Gulcha, the last town with gas stations offering 95 octane.

We fill up the tank to the brim so we don’t have to worry about it until the day after tomorrow!

The road then takes us up to the Taldyk Pass (3,600 m)—time to break out the fleece.

And to keep our eyes wide open...

Now we’re in sight of the Alay Valley, a long glacial valley wedged between two mountain ranges: the Tian Shan to the north and the Pamir to the south.

This valley sits at around 3,000 meters above sea level and is surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks that make Mont Blanc look like a dwarf.

Lenin Peak, for example, rises to 7,134 meters above sea level!

It’s the easiest 7,000-meter peak to climb—or at least the least difficult—and it’ll get a bit crowded on its slopes in a few weeks.

No way we’re attempting that adventure—we’ll just admire it from afar!

But for now, no Lenin Peak in sight. Just a village, Sary-Tash, a town whose only real draw is its location.

Stunning, isn’t it?

To the left, the road heads toward China; to the right, toward Tajikistan.

We take the left one for about 30 kilometers until we reach the local Chamonix—Sary-Mogul.

Well, the Chamonix of 200 years ago...

A few long dusty streets, some guesthouses, two mosques, and a handful of shops.

Don’t forget to stock up on everything before ending up here!

We park at the hotel parking lot (the photo on Google Maps is completely wrong...) and go check out our room.

It’s a recent construction attached to the original guesthouse.

The rooms are small, and the furnishings are a bit of a hodgepodge, but it’s clean, there are private bathrooms, and most importantly, there’s an incredible view from the bed!

Lenin’s bald head is currently in the clouds, but I hope to catch a glimpse of it before we leave!

We go for a long walk to the last houses in the village, then head back for dinner.

It won’t be a feast, but at least the prices are reasonable here!

5 € per person.

Strange—this is the guesthouse farthest from any city on the whole trip...

The sun’s setting, and so are we.

Hey! Look, the sky’s clearing up!

I don’t regret the kilometers we drove to get to this remote corner at all!

AT Attila Globetrotter ·
Yes, it's a country of landscapes—so that means kilometers to cover, whether on horseback, on foot, by bike, by motorcycle, or by car!

What’s more, the paper guide I chose for this trip only suggests off-road routes.

Plus, I decided to go all the way to Lenin Peak, which added even more kilometers.

That said, we covered far fewer miles than on some of my other trips. I’m thinking especially of Southern Africa and those European road trips from Auvergne.

The stages rarely exceeded 200 kilometers.

We only traveled 4,100 kilometers in 21 days.

We’d almost hit 7,000 on our way to Norway...😄

The photos might give an impression of monotony, but I didn’t feel that way during the trip at all.

Cities and villages aren’t this country’s strong suit. Kyrgyzstan is a nature destination—it’s not for those who prefer urban travel.

Unless you enjoy post-Soviet vibes or urban exploration in certain spots.

The journey wasn’t complicated for either the driver or his substitute. The travel account might give a sense of difficulty or long road stretches, but the toughest moments happened outside the car: some hikes, the two hours on horseback, or the meager contents of a plate...

I haven’t been to Uzbekistan, so it’s hard for me to compare.

From the photos I’ve seen, they’re completely different.

Most feedback on Uzbekistan highlights stunning monuments. There’s nothing like that in Kyrgyzstan.

Temperature-wise, it’s not the same either.

I wouldn’t even consider going to Samarkand in the summer—way too hot for me!

Kyrgyzstan has something in common with Norway: the near-total absence of blackout curtains in most accommodations.

Like almost every morning, we’re woken up by daylight.

I pull back the thin curtain, and Lenin stands before me in his blue setting.

If someone had told me one day Lenin would dazzle me...

We quickly finish breakfast and set off to meet him via the trail leading to Tulpar-Kul Lake.

One, then two bridges make it easy to cross two raging rivers, and the track now heads straight toward the mountains.

The first few kilometers are monotonous as we cross the plain.

A few determined hikers use the track as a trail.

They’ve got 25 kilometers of mostly boring walking ahead—should’ve saved their energy for a more interesting hike.

Herds graze peacefully on the sparse grass of the valley, barely disturbed by our distant passage.

The snow-capped peaks draw closer, and the track starts to climb.

Let the show begin!

Around a bend, the lake appears.

It looks like it was placed here by a painter or a photographer specializing in reflections...

A few yurt camps await visitors, and some vans, trucks, and converted 4x4s have set up camp here.

Could be worse, right?
Édifices religieux : concours de photos amical d'août 2026 Rubrique Jeux Voyages C'est le moment de poster vos meilleurs clichés !
AT Attila Globetrotter ·
We park the RAV4 almost at the end of the track—we're switching to pedestrian mode!

The lake sits at 3,500 meters above sea level, so we’re avoiding hikes with too much elevation gain.

What if we head to this viewpoint on Lenin Peak?

8 kilometers round trip, reaching 3,700 meters!

Easy, right?

I forgot to calculate the cumulative elevation gain.

770 meters if you add both directions of this dead-end hike...

It just keeps going up and down!

Needless to say, we’ll take our time...

Time to snap some marmots, time to trample a few cows’ meals, time to check out Lenin Peak base camp, time to get lightheaded from the strong scent of wild onions—but most of all, time to be mesmerized by everything around us!

Weirdly, there’s almost no one on the trail.

Is it the remoteness of this region compared to the usual tourist circuits, perhaps?

Yet the road isn’t complicated, nor is the track.

But it does eat up several days, and most people only spend one or two weeks in this country.

Shall we head back to the hotel?

We’ll fall asleep blissfully tonight, replaying the highlights of this amazing day.
