Hi there,

As you can see in some of the earlier photos, the American West isn’t always 110°F with a clear blue sky—even in August, especially around the San Francisco Bay. That day, the lighthouse at "Point Reyes" was completely swallowed by fog so thick you could cut it with a chainsaw.

On the road leading there, the pines lining the Pacific struggle to stand up to the elements—a sign of the often harsh weather.

Hi!

You’re placing San Francisco in the Southwest?

Hello everyone,

This travel journal is such a great idea. It brings back so many memories and also lets us discover places we’ve never heard of before.

Unfortunately, the West can also throw some unexpected challenges or bad surprises our way. Here’s a little glimpse of the wildfire that forced us to evacuate our campsite in Yosemite back in 2014. Part of the park was sadly off-limits, and we had to adjust our 3-day visit.

And here’s the only photo where you can barely make out the "Half Dome."

It’s always a shame when nature disrupts a plan we’ve carefully prepared for months, but that’s life. It forces us to put things into perspective and see them from a different angle. We couldn’t see or do everything we’d planned, but the atmosphere was different and very special—almost surreal...

At the time, we took it as a good excuse to have to come back 😛

Here, I’ll treat you to pretty much the same shot of Half Dome on a clear, smoke-free day...

you’re right, we’ll have to go back... even if it’s disheartening to see that nearly every year since, California’s had these almost uncontrollable wildfire seasons.

Hey everyone!

We’ve really gotten into the swing of things with some beautiful storms, and Marc and I even ended up in a smoky haze. So, I’m throwing out a new challenge to all of you:

Share your best photos (with location and context) of reflections in water!

I’ll start modestly with a photo taken near Vermilion Cliffs, at Lees Ferry, along the Colorado River... it’s morning, and we’re taking a chill little hike along the Spencer Trail...

I love this travel journal—everyone contributes and gets joy from posting their best photos. Nothing but happiness to share. Here are some reflections on the beautiful Blue Lake at 3,300 m, nestled in the heart of Mount Sneffels, Colorado. We did this amazing hike in June 2017. We returned in September 2018 to continue the trek and reach the two other lakes at 3,500 m. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING.

Oops, I messed up! One extra file—sometimes MacGyver isn’t on top of his game!, 😕

Hi Philippe, Quick practical tip: actually, you can go back and edit your own posts (so in this case, you could’ve removed the duplicate photo). In fact, at the top right of your post, you’ll see "options" (next to "reply"), and when you click on "options," you can choose "edit." You’ll then return to the draft version of your post, where you can modify, correct, etc. Just click "save changes" at the bottom of the page.

Anyway, another great hike!

hi there,

thanks for this original post—it’s clear there’s some real *level* (as the kids say) in the photo choices (including yours). I’ll add my little contribution with these photos of reflections in a place everyone knows but remains off-limits (permit required) for most, and that I’ve been lucky enough to visit three times...

MY MycoVtt Veteran ·
It's hard to have this kind of reflection in this spot with no wind at all—there’s a venturi effect, so there are still a few light ripples on the surface. Back in 2017, I waited 30 minutes for the wind to die down, but no luck almost...

So much water when you were there!

This one’s almost windless, but too early for good light...

This one’s better for the light, but same ripples as yours...

Hi Yves,

Yes, I remember your post with your photos, and we discussed it at the time. I’ve been there three times, and only once did I see water—but it was amazing: blue skies, no wind, plenty of water, and not too hot. In short, conditions we rarely get (like a driver’s license!!!).

Is that Coal Mine Canyon in your photos?

Looking forward to it!
HI Hiacinthe Globetrotter ·
Hello Fabienne,

July 2016: we’re back on the water, but this time on the Colorado River. I’d booked through an agency in Page for a scenic float trip. We’d already done some rafting on the Colorado near Moab in the summer, but this was even more peaceful. The Colorado was very calm—I wasn’t looking for thrills at all, just a chance to admire the scenery from water level. I thought we’d go all the way to Lee’s Ferry, but we only went as far as the bottom of Horseshoe Bend. When the motor was off, we’d glide slowly along the water and could take photos.

During the trip, we pulled ashore at a little beach. The water was pretty chilly, but it was clean, and you could go for a swim. At the end of the gently sloping path up, you can see some petroglyphs.

Peanuts Lake was taken on June 25th. The lake steams very often in summer (it’s almost 0°C most nights).

Long Lake is from June 26th. The bloom usually lasts from June 20th to July 7th. After those dates, you’ll need to go up to 3600m or higher for the flowers...

Hi Fabienne,

During our July 2013 trip, we took the "Peak to Peak Scenic Byway" to get from Denver to Estes Park (a town located at the eastern entrance of Rocky Mountain NP). Here’s the route: https://www.coloradodirectory.com/maps/peak.html

Along this road, 48.9 km north of Nederland, we stopped to visit "Saint Malo's Chapel on the Rock":
