I circle around. Sometimes I brush against it, sometimes I drift away... I tremble, I feel, ... I hold back.

Tonight, I’m... at the gates of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Is the climax of what’s to come contained in this haunting preamble?

for a melancholic Celt and a dark Defender, mist and clouds are friends

Maybe there’s no creation without melancholy...

Oops... I loosen my collar, sweating bullets as my screen casts its guilty, pale glow back onto my face. A noise—quick! I slam the laptop shut and spin around... no one. False alarm. I lift the screen back up and dive back into the preliminaries of *The Rogue* teasing his Lesotho...

I don’t participate in your conversations very often, but I do follow them regularly. So, I’m also eagerly waiting for Voyajou’s entry on Lesotho... especially since I’ve just returned from there! I’ll take this opportunity to thank them again for the info about the roads (or tracks!) in Lesotho. It was for the route from Thaba Tseka to Semonkong, but in the end, we got lost between Sani Pass and Thaba Tseka! ** I still don’t really know where we went, but the nice flat track turned into a barely visible trail among the rocks (phew, we had a 4x4), and then another 2 hours of driving as night fell. Thanks to Voyajou’s adventure, I knew we’d be welcomed in a village, but in the end, we found refuge in a (slightly rundown) clinic in the middle of nowhere. A big thank you to African hospitality! Not exactly planned, but it’ll be a memorable part of our trip :)

On the other hand, there’s massive roadwork going on, so things have changed a lot compared to three years ago.

We’ll see what Voyajou has to say about it.

Can’t wait to read the rest...

I do it from time to time, but there are so many others who share their adventures much better than I ever could!

But alright, Régis, I’ll try to put something together (and besides, I’d promised myself I would😕, so you’re the nudge I needed 😛) ...in another post so I don’t interfere with Jean’s much-anticipated story 😉

“Mandela died tonight.” At dawn, I find this laconic message from France on my phone. We’re spending the night in a national park, but with heavy hearts, we decide to leave and head for a city. Yesterday, we saw dozens of elephants—sometimes even competing for the road—but this morning, over the two hours it takes us to reach the exit, we don’t spot a single one. Are they hiding to mourn? Only bounding antelopes and carefree zebras keep us company until, just before the exit, two lions cross our path on the road. Mandela was often called the lion of Africa and the lion of freedom.
AI AirOne Globetrotter ·
A new Mandela miracle! He brought Jean back to us! Don’t cry, Jean-Luc, Mandela has been gone from us for a long time, and he’ll remain in our hearts and memories forever, just like Gandhi. He’s cut from the same cloth as those great men of global stature who never truly die—it was the heart of a 95-year-old man that stopped beating, a man tired of living. We can’t be sad to see him freed from his suffering. He’s among the stars now. Find a bright star in the sky tonight and name it Nelson. You’ll be able to talk to him during your sleepless nights and, if you wish, reshape a world that needs some serious fixes. Beyond that, you’re about to experience something extraordinary—you’ll connect with a nation in mourning that adored him for who he was: a great man, a man of peace. Safe travels, Jean—maybe the most beautiful journey you’ll ever take.

A Bestiary in Kruger The elephant’s march, majestic, defying time, like that of African women weighed down by age and abundance. The hyenas’ tight, slightly stiff, constrained little gallop. The chaos of hippos in the water, trembling rocks. The bewildered air of giraffes with their ingenuous gaze, their gallop like a metronome. The lion’s quiet arrogance, making you want to remind him he has a predator—man. The discreet rhinoceros, motionless in the veld. Herds of antelopes—the impala like a spring, the elusive kudu, the solitary dik-dik, the placid buffaloes—and the wonder of my guest.

A Paradise in the Kingdom of Heaven We leave Lesotho through a fertile valley in the northeast, behind Golden Gate NP, which I had missed. The Caledon River, lined with wild roses and willows, offers its alluvium to farmers who don’t let the opportunity slip by. Old tractors replace oxen in front of the plow, sheep give way to cows. The houses are better maintained, and a few small agricultural sheds have been built, while the women appear more elegant and cheerful than in the mountains. When we reach Monontso Pass, marking the border, there’s no office, police, or customs from Lesotho—only South Africa is represented, so officially, we haven’t left Lesotho.

Soweto The street where Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela once lived—perhaps the only one in the world that can claim two Nobel Peace Prize winners—this street, a symbol of struggles, has become where the new Black elite flaunt their wealth. A line of luxury cars, led by Porsche Cayennes, is double-parked, reducing traffic to a single lane, while on the terrace of a private establishment, elegant women giggle on the arms of men in white suits wearing panama hats and dark glasses. Just a few streets away, sewage flows in the open, the ground is littered with trash, but the houses are made of brick. We don’t visit the real township—the one with shacks made of plastic, sheet metal, and wood, the one of drugs and prostitution.

Life and Death In the cemetery of the Cradock township stands a monument and the graves of those known as The Cradock Four, the four Black activists kidnapped, tortured, and shot by special forces in 1985. The epitaph says their blood will nourish the trees and freedom. The pigs roaming among the graves—most of which are just cairns—and the sheep grazing the sparse grass between the stones couldn’t care less. The trash glitters in the morning light: you get the headstones you can afford.

Addo Elephant Park Here, the most common species are small metal beetles, parading along the tracks. Of course, there are also plenty of elephants—placid, so unafraid, so used to the beetles that they let you approach within five meters without flinching (neither do I). You hear the whistle of ore trains, whose tracks run alongside the park, more often than the trumpeting of anger. The moon, in its first quarter, sinks gently into the bush: at one point, it looks like a luminous rhinoceros horn.

Snippets Vervets on the ground: agile, fast, organized, experienced, funny, cheeky—this is how vervets go after my breakfast. .../... “This country’s got serious swagger,” my young guest blurts out in Lesotho. .../... After Mandela’s passing, we attend, two nights in a row in the small towns we pass through, a concert to celebrate… the switching on of Christmas lights. Many participants still wear the same T-shirt, printed with “We love you Madiba.” .../... South Africa, between fascination and revulsion, between love at first sight and disgust.

We Are All Mandela’s Children That’s what this crowd in colorful, mixed attire seems to say—just like the mix of skin colors—in St. George’s Cathedral in Cape Town, where an ecumenical celebration in honor of Nelson Mandela is taking place this morning. From the choir, a moving chorus lifts the congregation while five officiants, representing as many faiths, compete in brotherhood. Will the gods take offense at such fervor for one man? In the transept, people wait, overjoyed, to leave a message in the books of condolences. Nelson, you are the honor of humanity.

hey V...ou,

The Temptation of Lesotho

I’m not entering Lesotho. Not yet. I’m circling around it. Sometimes I brush against it, sometimes I drift away, following the small roads that embrace it in South Africa. Valleys stretch out like tongues, edged with plateaus like lips. Further on, waterfalls glisten, hills rise up.

Then comes the big game—curves grow sharper, I shiver, I feel the fire from deep within that lifted the mountains. A canyon opens, and I hold back.

Tonight, I’m at Golden Gate, at the gates of the Kingdom of the Sky.

Uh, is your post clearly marked "not suitable for under-18s"? If not, we might need to think about that...

Hey there,

For the uninitiated, corrugated iron roads refer to dirt, sand, or gravel tracks common in Australia and Southern Africa. They warp under the elements and give the impression, when driving on them, of rolling over corrugated iron sheets.

And they’re everywhere in South America too!!!!

Back in the good old days when Madame Taubira and I shared the same Papuan, I hesitate to say it now, but these days, she keeps the seals of office while I’m the one getting rained on tonight

You’ve gotta be an artist to have that much wit!
