it's what's in front of the lens and behind the eyepiece.

I’d add “having great light” too 😎

Otherwise, it’s true that a 600mm f/4 helps... [;]

You're right, Jean-François, light is the essence of photography, as its name suggests. But it's up to the photographer to manage it as best as possible to get the most out of it, right?

Hi Jean-François,

I’d add “having great light” 😎

And to expand: “light and its corollaries—the subject,” meaning the photographer, the right gear, and one or more subjects to photograph in that light.

FYI: 500/4 + DX-format DSLR = 750/4… that’s a game-changer.

Good evening Jean-François,

I’d add “having great light” 😎

And to expand, “light and its corollaries: the subject,” meaning the photographer, the right setup, and one or more subjects to photograph in that light.

For reference: 500/4 + DX-format DSLR = 750/4—that’s a game-changer…

Evening Éric,

That’s Nikon or the Sony APS-C sensor equivalent. On Canon APS-C (EOS 7D and all two- or three-digit EOS bodies), the crop factor is 1.6×, so a 500 mm lens gives you the field of view of an 800 mm (and an 800 mm lens gives you the field of a 1280 mm—also a game-changer).

Have a good evening.

Hi Eric,

I just joined this forum and read your travel journal with great interest. It was actually the very first reserve you visited, Ol Pejeta, that caught my attention.

We visited it 30 years ago (during a group trip with Nouvelles Frontières), and I think it had a different name back then... Sweetwaters Lodge, maybe? I still have very fond memories of it, especially of a cheetah family and the nighttime roars of a lion just behind the fence, which terrified someone in our group.

Thank you for letting me relive this place, which still seems worth visiting. Thanks, of course, for the whole story and your photos.

However, I was quite shocked by your guide’s attitude!! Especially since we’re heading back to Kenya this October for another safari (it’ll be our 4th). I’m starting to worry about ending up with a guide of the same caliber...!! Let’s hope for a more open and cooperative one.

Best regards,
