I just read his account of North Korea. Hats off to him! I’m gonna devour the rest.

Same feeling here 🏴‍☠️ I only knew him through his writing—I read his travel journal on North Korea and Munich, and started the one on China 7 years earlier. Knowing these stories are finite and cut short so suddenly is really heartbreaking... I hope he left happier than on any other trip...

Hi there, I haven’t had the chance to read Patrick’s writings about North Korea yet, since I’ve just joined the site. Could you point me to where I can find them? I get the strong feeling he was a wonderful man, a true traveler. Thanks for your reply.

Thanks to those who allowed me to read about the trip to North Korea. It's mind-blowingly real. I wasn't expecting anything better. I've traveled a lot, and it reminds me of some parts of China. I'm not here to judge—every country has its customs—but still!!! France is beautiful, and life here is pleasant, even if we're terrible grumblers, we live very well here. Annesorya

On this anniversary day, a Native American prayer:

Don’t go to my grave to weep, I’m not there, I don’t sleep, I am the thousand winds that blow, I am the snowflakes’ sparkling glow, I am the sunlight on the golden grain, I am the gentle autumn rain, I am the birds that wake in morning’s hush, I am the star that shines in the night. Don’t go to my grave to weep, I’m not there. I’m not dead.

Thanks Danielle for reminding us of this sad anniversary. I was in Quito and couldn’t believe it—my eyes filled with sadness, I struggled to reply, I could barely see my keyboard.

Patrick, you’re often in my thoughts; rereading your stories always puts me in a good mood. You’re not far away, but what outfit have you put on today to talk to us?

Nilsou.

On this anniversary day, a Native American prayer:

Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there; I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die.

This is certainly the journey we all dream of taking one day... the one his friends feel from time to time when he comes to visit them... no doubt he’s at peace and must be laughing at us debating on this forum. He must miss not being able to come and add his two cents... 🙂 See you soon...

Hey old buddy!

I don’t know if it’s my subconscious, if I think about him often or not, or just my memory, but I always come back around this date to make sure I don’t forget this sad anniversary!

Damn, 2008—already 3 years... phew, it’s tough!

Hugs to my fellow travelers and especially to you, Pat!

Yeah, it’s weird—I was thinking about Patrick yesterday when I heard a friend is leaving for Uganda soon.

I think of him whenever Uganda, North Korea, Shanghai, or Nice come up in conversation...

And another little thought for him today...

+1, same here—I often think of Patrick, we miss him so much.

Hi,

I also mentioned in the conversation, just yesterday, Patrick's amazing appetite and unique enthusiasm.

I would’ve definitely loved to have known him and worked in the same firm. I once had Bignon Lebray on the line and got this wild idea to ask them if Mr. Yangguizi was as missed in Shanghai as he is on this forum... Yes, inevitably, words like China, Iran, Korea, or Uganda make me think of him too. His words had to carry real weight to leave such a lasting impression on strangers.

Hi everyone

Just a little thought for Patrick-Yangguizi. He would’ve turned 36 today...

Thanks Fred for rekindling the flame—it still burns bright in my mind for Patrick. Peace to the spirit of this Great Traveler who inspires all of us when we read his travel journals. Clemalex

Hi,

We won’t forget, especially since he wrote on his blog "I was born on November 4, 1975 (don’t forget my birthday, thanks!) in Nice, in the south of France, on the Mediterranean coast."
