Prologue
This journal recounts a trip to Rajasthan that’s already over a year old and that I’ve only now found the chance to write about. The summer of 2024 marked my return to India—my tenth trip—after six long years away since my last solo wanderings in Tamil Nadu in 2018 (the journal of which is published on this site). That absence was partly (but not only) due to the long COVID and post-COVID period, which saw a complete halt and then a major slowdown in global tourism. To top it off, Voyage Forum announced its closure in an end-of-the-world atmosphere. A sad time for our favorite social activity…
A few weeks after returning from Rajasthan, I tried to motivate myself to start writing a journal to publish on a forum claiming to be VF’s successor, which I’d eventually signed up for out of desperation. But I kept hesitating and putting the project off because, for one, I no longer have the time I used to. For another, the vibe wasn’t really taking off on that forum—it was overrun with ads and not very active, contrary to what its host’s name suggested. Despite its good intentions and commendable role as a stopgap, it also turned out to be very impractical to use, especially when you don’t have much time like me. I’ll admit I’d occasionally check back on VF to see if anything was happening. But all the discussions remained frozen in time, stuck in that fateful year, 2020. Then, rumors swirled online about shady reasons behind its closure, leaving little room for hope.
And then, one fine morning, I got a message at work from Marien informing me that VF had reopened. What a huge surprise! Even though the forum’s “end” had played out in a somewhat apocalyptic atmosphere, the memories of passionate and heated discussions, the frank debates, and the useful exchanges that made this site a traveler’s goldmine and a unique hub of conviviality all came rushing back to me like a breath of fresh air. I finally saw a sign and tried to motivate myself to find the time to publish the journal of this tenth trip to India and fifth to Rajasthan. But in the end, I got bogged down in professional and family obligations and never managed to find the time to get started. That’s now fixed, though, because I had two reasons for wanting to do it: I find that looking back on a trip to tell others about it is a highly beneficial introspective exercise. Also, I thought this journal could be useful to other travelers on a few points.
Because, “do we really need yet another journal about Rajasthan?” you might rightly ask! Especially in a time when so many journals about the “Land of Kings” have been published since VF’s return, not to mention the countless stories you can already find online about this region, one of India’s most touristy. And I’d add, why go back to Rajasthan for a fifth time, where I’ve already dragged my feet more than enough—through its forts, deserts, temples, cities, villages, bumpy roads, train stations, tasty street food stalls, cheap guesthouses, and more? Where some might see just another overhyped tourist destination full of the same old *Arabian Nights* clichés, worn to a thread, that I mentioned earlier, when there’s so much else to see in India?
Well, first because it’s a magnificent country I never tire of, where I started an academic study and made so many connections. It’s also packed with places where you won’t find a single tourist (right, Marie-Jo?), even in the heart of well-trodden paths and classic itineraries. And most importantly, as I said earlier, things have changed in recent years. First, after six years without traveling far, the urge to go back to India was getting stronger. But this time, no more solo trips (often) or duo adventures (sometimes)—now it’s a team of four that has to come along! And even if you can argue with that, what better place than Rajasthan to introduce India to people who’ve never seen it? To kids you want to amaze?
Plus, traveling with your new little family to your favorite country isn’t the same as going solo in often spartan conditions that only affect you. It’s a different challenge, but ultimately probably much harder. So, is it really reasonable to take two kids to India, including a two-year-old baby? That’s one of the main goals of this journal (but not the only one)—to try to answer that question.
As you can tell, it’s not so much the destination but the slightly unusual setup of this trip that, in my opinion, will make this journal interesting. Despite my experience and expertise (yes, I dare say it) in India, there were plenty of questions before we finalized the plan and said, “Alright, let’s go!” The questions were flying for us parents. Is it wise to travel to India with a two-year-old? What would we do (it happened) if the kids got very sick? Would they be able to handle a road trip on Rajasthan’s bumpy, dusty roads using public transport? Could they handle the shock of such a different world—the dirt, poverty, pollution, noise (…and the smell, as they say), the spicy food, monkeys, mosquitoes, snakes, tigers, leopards, and so on? In short, all the clichés that I usually joke about suddenly became potential realities. Another concern: as a mixed Franco-African family (not me, but my partner and her oldest), wouldn’t we risk not always being well received, given what you sometimes hear about that in India? How would Indians react to seeing a mixed-race family, the ultimate taboo in a country of purity and social segregation, which would undoubtedly raise many questions for them? Of course, not everything went as expected… Because, as you know, with India—and what makes it charming for some—there are always complications: sometimes where you don’t expect them… and sometimes where you do. I’ll go into detail about that in the journal to come (not right away) and in the final review (even later). These experiences could be useful to travelers who find themselves in similar situations and have the same questions we did before embarking on such a journey. And maybe it’ll spark the curiosity of those who aren’t concerned and will read yet another Rajasthan journal, but with its own unique twists.
Despite my unchanged constraints, which mean I have little time to write this, I don’t want to rush the story, so I’ll take my time. There will probably be lulls. I hope that won’t stop people from coming to react, debate, share their impressions, or ask for information.

Pour moi, j'apprécie ce moment de lire des livres justement sur les voyages au cours de mes voyages, donc j'en ai toujours sur moi...dans la valise, puis après toujours un dans mon sac pour s'arrêter n'importe où et goûter au livre dans un endroit étranger..

Why bike (MTB) along the canal between the Two Seas: the lateral canal of the Garonne from Bordeaux to Toulouse, and the Midi Canal from Toulouse to the Mediterranean?
This canal was created to connect the Mediterranean to the Atlantic without going around Spain, and along its entire length, there’s an old towpath (used to pull barges). Since this path is closed to traffic (except for service vehicles from Voies Navigables de France), no cars drive on it—it’s dangerous, noisy, and polluting. The Canal between the Two Seas was built for transporting goods, so it passes through many towns you can explore without dealing with traffic. You can stock up on supplies or spend the night. You’ll discover the varied landscapes of the countryside, always in the serenity brought by the calm and slow flow of the canal’s water. Most of the time, you’ll be in the shade of trees planted to stabilize the banks with their roots. All you have to do is follow this blue—or rather green—ribbon without needing to consult a map. But the biggest advantage is that it’s flat! Of course, on the Canal du Midi, water flows from the watershed divide at Naurouze eastward to the Mediterranean and westward to Toulouse. On the lateral canal of the Garonne, water flows toward Bordeaux. But this slope is almost imperceptible, which is a huge plus when you want to travel by bike for several days with luggage.
When I say "bike," I really mean MTB because, while the towpath has been replaced in some places by a paved bike path, it mostly resembles a dirt trail—sometimes smooth, sometimes rocky, and often cluttered with roots from the magnificent trees lining it. Since the canal was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, improvements have been underway, but it won’t be tomorrow that you’ll be able to ride from Bordeaux to Sète on a road bike. And I’m afraid the first sections of the path will be worn out before the rest is finished. You might even run into construction work for this bike path. That’s what happened to me during the spring of 2007.
Sunday, 03/11 – Valence d'Agen 08:15 to Toulouse (Rangueil) 16:30 97 km in 8h15 (6h on the bike) I started on the recently paved path along the lateral canal of the Garonne. The first locks appeared, and as I approached Moissac, the path turned into a billiard table until Castelsarrasin. After the Cousteau port, I was back on the classic dirt towpath with its rocks, roots, and nutria holes. But not for long—soon, I hit ruts left by backhoes and bulldozers, which, fortunately, were resting for the Sunday. A pile of rubble taller than me blocked the entire width of the path. I didn’t want to turn back to find the previous bridge and ride on the other bank, which was just as impassable (dense grass). It wasn’t easy to carry a bike with full panniers, so I lifted it over several mounds. I kept going, sometimes on foot, unsure how far the construction extended. Another bulldozer—luckily, the ground was dry. The work went all the way to Montech, making the path impassable. I recommend taking the N113, which runs parallel (that’s what I did on the way back). In Montech, the famous water slope was at rest, waiting for tourists. For many kilometers, I was back on the traditional towpath. The closer I got to Toulouse, the better the surface became, and the more cyclists and pedestrians I saw—until the city center, where there was nonstop bike traffic, especially students heading to Rangueil.
Monday, 03/12 – Rangueil 09:10 to Revel 16:30 86 km in 7h20 (5h30 on the bike) As soon as you reach Toulouse, you make a 90° turn to follow the connection between the lateral canal and the Canal du Midi. Heading east, you pass the barge selling the famous Toulouse violet souvenirs. A real bike path has been built for 50 km to Port Lauragais. It’s a true joy for Toulousains and travelers. Restrooms have been installed or shared with highway rest areas, allowing you to refill water (of course, bikes are banned from ASF rest areas, but cleverly placed racks let you secure your bike and walk in). At Port Lauragais, it’s another rest area shared by highway users, cyclists, and boaters. You’ll find a cafeteria, restaurant, hotel, and a shop selling regional souvenirs. But the real pleasure is reaching the watershed divide at Naurouze, where water flows toward the Mediterranean on one side and the Atlantic on the other. There, I decided to leave the Canal du Midi, which continues toward Castelnaudary with a much rougher towpath, to follow the *Rigole* that feeds the canal with water from the Saint-Ferréol basin. For me, it was like returning to the source—a bit like a pilgrimage in honor of the brilliant Pierre-Paul Riquet, the designer of this magnificent work. I followed the service trail along the *Rigole*. It’s actually a variant of the GR 653, leading to Revel alongside this artificial waterway. It’s fed by water from the Montagne Noire, and I was worried about a steep climb. But that wasn’t the case—the *Rigole* winds for 40 km, flowing gently under the trees. It was better than a dream: a smooth dirt path with the crunch of pine needles under the wheels, where I only crossed paths with a few fishermen... And to soothe sore buns, the last kilometers were on packed earth—a paradise (ATVs, stay away!). More walkers and cyclists appeared there.
Tuesday, 03/13 After a restful night in Revel, I started the morning with a walk around Lake Saint-Ferréol. A very pleasant 10 km hike, but I don’t recommend it for mountain bikers unless you’re used to mountain terrain and have strong calves. Otherwise, you can take the road—there are at least two hotels near the lake. In the afternoon, I began the return trip to Tarn-et-Garonne via the same path, with the same pleasure.
Total: 378 km of suffering and bliss, for which I must thank the departmental and regional councils for their funding, Voies Navigables de France for maintenance, and the volunteers who mark the hiking trails. And don’t you think you’re exaggerating a bit with your 378 km of bliss and the paradise of the *Rigole*?
Okay, fine—it wasn’t always idyllic. Sometimes the path was downright *pierrique*... but I had great weather, and the landscapes were so beautiful (water, sun, vegetation). In the rain or mud, it would’ve been less fun. What does *pierrique* even mean?
*Pierrique* is worse than rocky. I know a Pierrick, and he’s tough. And why *Facteur4*?
It’s France’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a factor of 4 by 2050. I’m doing my part by biking to work 3 out of 4 times. And your cassoulet?
Guilty as charged. I ate the best cassoulet of my life at the Hôtel du Midi in Revel. But it was very productive in methane. My stomach hurt so much I couldn’t sleep and ended up writing my postcards between 3 and 4 AM. So many great memories!

La géantropie... j'en parle deci-delà sur VF. J'en parle aussi sur mon site. En gros, cette discipline obscure s'intéresse à toutes les formes de représentation de l'espace. Une parmi tant d'autres, et non des moindres, est le récit de voyage.

Autre question: les réservations sur Expedia sont elles fiables, pas de risque de se retrouver avec les pires chambres de l'hotel??

J'ai établi plus ou moins mon itinéraire et j'ai téléchargé la calculatrice de miles de la staralliance histoire de voir le verdict. Mais, problème ! pas moyen de passer de papeete vers l'ile de paques, ni vers santiago de chili ! Conclusion j'ai l'impression que je vais devoir prendre un autre billet pour cette partie. Apparement la star alliance n'est pas très développée en amérique latine car avec les seules destinations possibles avec eux c'est en argentine et au brésil. Pouvez-vous m'éclairer ? Merci

Bonjour :) Je prends un travail indépendant en Angleterre depuis 6 mois et je commence dans quelques jours. Cependant, on m'a dit que je ferais tous mes impôts moi-même - je ne suis pas habitué à cela. Comment puis-je trouver plus d'informations à ce sujet? Dans mes recherches, j'ai trouvé cette calculatrice fiscale britannique qui a été utile pour trouver la taxe que je vais payer, mais je ne sais toujours pas comment je la paie! ! J'ai le projet d'acheter un voilier en 2011 pour pouvoir enfin voyager autour du monde. Enfin car j'en rève depuis tout petit et j'aurai bientôt l'opportunité de le faire. Depuis 1994 je suis indépendant, je vis avec un timing de fou et une calculatrice dans la tète pendant toute l'année (meilleure saison en été).De plus je rénove une fermette. Alors de grands changements vont se produire, l'année prochaine je remet mon entreprise et vend ma maison.Avec le capital j'achèterai un voilier genre ketch ou bavaria 44 prêt pour le grand voyage. Je recherche 2 hommes taillés pour l'aventure au sens large du terme, fiables à tout point de vue pour le bateau et la navigation, ayant de grande connaissances du bricolage et de la débrouille. Une participation financière sera négociée. Si ce genre de projet vous tente, discutons-en. Bien à vous et bon vents.😎

Sur mon séchoir, il y a une ptite "switch" de 125 v et 250 v. Puis-je l'utiliser là-bas? J'ai bien un transformeur mais il est écrit que c'est pour une calculatrice ou pour recharger des piles... Au fait, j'ai une D80, le chargeur de piles Nikon, va-t-il faire avec l'adapteur&

1) Quelle est la formule magique qui nous permet de calculer le pourcentage de pente entre un point A et un point B, effectué avec un vélo ? Sur le net j'ai vu quelque chose comme 20x arctan.....etc.....mais j'y comprend rien. J'ai téléchargé une calculatrice scientifique sur le net avec bcp de fonctions tels sin, cos, atan, asin, ln....etc.....mais suis perdu.
J'envie de calculer le pourcentage de la pente d'une petite montée de ma region en sachant que le départ est à 112m (du niveau de la mer, vu sur mon altimetre), la distance de montée 600 metres.donc trés courte....et l'arrivée est à 153m...donc une belle pente à priori ! 😛........merci pour l'aide

Cela fait quelques jours que je recherche des informations, des conseils et avis sur le choix d'un séjour d'une année en Allemagne après une première S.
Je suis actuellement en première S où mes notes mettent en évidence un problème au niveau des langues.
Dans ma classe, une fille est pour un an en France, nous sommes devenu vraiment amie et elle me propose de venir un an chez elle en Allemagne. Elle s'occuperait de mon inscription dans son lycée (très réputé), de mon logement (en internat : comme elle)...
Tout est réalisable, les frais sont accessibles ... tout est parfait de ce coté!
Mais de nature stressée, j'ai peur et je me pose plein de questions :
- est-ce judicieux de partir entre la première et la terminal (S), est-ce-que je vais perdre mon niveau scientifique (alors que j'ai déjà des difficultés?)
- Je quitte ma famille pour un an
- sachant que si je redouble en France, lors de mon bac S après une terminal j'aurai une calculatrice en mode exam et donc je ne peux pas rentrer mes formules :/
Mais je me dis que c'est l'occasion, mon amie fait sa terminal l'année prochaine donc je ne pourrais pas aller chez elle dans deux ans (après mon BAC).
De plus, je ne trouve pas que partir après le Bac soit mieux car partir avant me permettra d’exceller durant l'année et au bac en langue.
J'ai eu l'idée pour ne pas perdre mon niveau scientifique de faire des études par correspondance par le CNED, et qui me permettrait d'avoir en terminale des bases solides de première!
Je souhaite faire après le Bac, des études de droit pour devenir Avocate d'affaire. C'est è dire peut-etre de m'occuper de dégendre des entreprises au niveau international. Donc savoir parler couramment l'allemand et l'anglais seraient bénéfique.
Donc je voudrais savoir ce que vous me conseillez?!

nous voulons faire avec mon mari le sud pérou au mois de septembre 2013 , ne parlant pas espagnol et très peu l'anglais , nous nous demandons ce qui conviendrait le mieux : partir seuls...mais il faudrait trouver tout de même des personnes plus à l'aise que nous pour les langues pour nous accompagner (nous pouvons rester 2 à 3 semaines et comptons voir les principaux sites...le confort ne nous importe peu )
ou alors j'ai repéré une agence qui prendrait 2449 euros en 1/2 pension pour 15 jours

je voudrai juste indiquer aux futurs voyageurs vers prague, qu'en ce qui concerne la monnaie, il faut emmener des euros et faire le change sur place. utiliser sa carte bancaire est bien sûr possible mais des commissions sont appliquées alors que si vous amenez de l'euros "liquide", le change est SANS commissions. :))
à l'aéroport, pour prendre le bus, il y a des machines de change. changer le minimum d'euros pour prendre son bus, sachant qu'un ticket de bus aéroport-centre = 40 Kc / personne soit environ 1.75 euros, avec le change à l'aéroport : 1 euros = 22.88 Kc.
en ville, le change va de 24.30 Kc à 27.45 Kc !!! d'où l'intérêt de prendre le mini à l'aéroport.
attention pas de change dans la rue.... il y plein de boutiques de change partout et aussi des magasins qui font cela. demander exactement quel montant on vous donnera pour la somme en euros. la plupart vous montre directement la calculatrice. :) pas de blême.
il y aussi baucoup de magaisns qui prennent de l'euro. ils affichent leur taux de change. à voir...
avec la CB, le change passe à de 23 à 24 KC. :( commissions de 5 à 13 %. perso, comme je me suis trouvée sans euros liquide, j'ai été obligée d'utiliser ma carte. j'ai fait plusieurs boutiques de change. et face à mon hésitation, quant au taux présenté, le gars a réduit les frais de commissions. donc je pense qu'il peut être possible de "négocier" en quelque sorte les frais. de 750 Kc de commission, passé à 250 !! :) pour 200 euros par CB, j'ai eu "droit" à 5000 Kc en poche et 250 Kc retiré sur mon compte en guise de frais. bilan : taux apparent à 25 (1 euro = 25 Kc) mais en réel : 23.75 (5000 Kc - 250 Kc pour 200 euros soit 1 euro = 23.75 Kc) donc change beaucoup moins valable que le change direct en monnaie. et en plus, je ne sais pas vraiment à quel taux la banque va me retirer ces "250 Kc" de frais...?? peut-être encore une surpriiiise !! :/

lorsque que vous sortez de l'aéroport international de denpasar à bali vous avez des guichets de change côte à côte j'ai changé 100 € = 1155000 ruphia il m'a donné dix billets de 100000 = 1 million de RP puis un billet de 10000 (dix mille ) et un billet de 5000 ( cinq mille ) et une pièce de 500 rp donc 1001500 au lieu de 1155000 rp soit un bénéfice pour lui de 153500 rp seulement il ne s'avait pas que je connaissais bien leur billet étant à mon 7éme voyage en indonésie mais j'avoue que la première fois sa ruse marche . Donc ami voyageur gare au beau sourire des Balinais et Balinaises .

Je sais, ça a l'air bête mais franchement, quand je vois tous vos posts avec des indications en baths, j'ai bcp de mal à suivre, d'autant que le taux varie en fonction de l'âge du post...
Donc merci à vous pour cette première indication (j'ai cru comprendre qu'en ce moment 100 baths avoisinaient 2.35 euros, partez plus large à 2.5 au besoin ) mais soyez sympas, trouvez moi le truc "infaillible" pour ne pas me tromper quand j'y serai.
