To avoid spending three weeks in the somewhat chilly Patagonia, we’re planning to head up to Valparaíso and the Atacama Desert. Here’s the itinerary: Arrival in Buenos Aires Flight to El Calafate (4 nights) Bus to Puerto Natales (1 night) Torres del Paine (4 nights) Santiago (1 night) (flight from Puerto Natales) Valparaíso (4 nights) San Pedro de Atacama (5 nights) Santiago (1 night) then flight to Paris I’m wondering whether it’s worth going all the way to Ushuaia. Sure, it’s a legendary destination, but is it as impressive as El Calafate and Torres del Paine? The other option would be to cut one night from Torres del Paine, Valparaíso, and San Pedro, and spend 3 nights in Ushuaia instead. Also, I’m a bit confused about whether an international driver’s permit is required to drive in Argentina and Chile. I’ve applied for one, but the processing times are really long, and I probably won’t have it before I leave... Thanks for your feedback, Marc

Nous avons prévu pour 2021 un tour du monde et nous avons environ 3 semaines au chili (hors ile de Paques). Il y a l'air d'avoir énormement de choses à faire et à voir dans l'extreme nord, et en avril ce n'est pas forcément la bonne saison en patagonie.

Notre premier itinéraire ressemble à ça : - Santiago 2 jours - Valparaiso 3 jours - Arica 1 jours - Putre / Parc Lauca / Salar de Surir etc 2 jours - Route jusque Iquique avec Matilla et Pica 1 jour - Iquique 1 jour - San Pedro De Atacama 5 jours - Route jusque Antofogasta 1 jours - Caldera 1 jour - Laguna Santa rosa / Salar Maricunga ... 1-2 jours - 1 journée off quelque part - Puis retour sur Calama pour partir à Uyuni

Est ce trop pour cette région du Chili ? Il est difficile de faire des choix, Ile de Chiloé, Puertto Montt, La patagonie... sur un autre voyage ?

Bonjour à tous, Je ne vais pas être le seul à poser cette question, mais nous devons partir 1 petit mois dans la région des lacs et bien entendu, mon inquiétude est grande compte tenu des évènements actuels. Nous partons le 3 Novembre. Arrivée à Santiago le soir vers 22 heures . Nuit à l'hôtel Ibis et départ en bus le lendemain matin pour Témuco ou nous resterons dans cette région pendant 2 semaines, puis 1 semaine de plus dans la région de La Séréna. Est il prudent de se rendre dans ce pays ? Nous ne faisons que transiter par Santiago. Pour nôtre 6 ème trip en Amérique du Sud, c'est pas de chance. Nous avons bien entendu les billets d'avion, les réservation de voiture et d'hôtels. Enfin bref...la totale. J'espère avoir de bons conseils pour prendre une décision. Merci à tous d'avance.

Bonjour, Il n'est jamais trop tard pour rendre compte de son voyage. Le confinement me laisse enfin du temps pour le faire. Je suis parti le 17 août 2017 et je suis rentré le 7 février 2018. Entre temps, je suis allé en Argentine par cargo puis une fois sur ce continent, j'ai visité l'Uruguay, l'Argentine et le Chili. Durant tout ce voyage, j'ai tenu un carnet journalier. L'État d'Urgence a été déclaré, pour le moment, UNIQUEMENT EN CE QUI CONCERNE LA RÉGION MÉTROPOLITAINE, càd Santiago et les environs immédiats.

Mais. des manifestations ont actuellement lieu dans d'autres villes du Chili et la situation pourrait empirer encore.

La situation s'est fort dégradée ces dernières heures.

je commence à préparer un voyage à 2 , pour traverser le fjord chilli argentine pour rejoindre Ushuaïa et rejoindre le cap Horn monument .le temps du voyage sur 3 semaines, est-ce suffisant?

j'ai vue des compagnies ferry (Navimag) . pour les vols depuis paris après je sais pas où on arrive ? La perfide la moins froide aussi qu'il vaut mieux pour y aller. enfin un peu dans le vague pour l'instant.

Today, we started looking into traveling in April 2026, either to Chile or Argentina. It’s our first trip to South America. I’ve only been to French Guiana once, about ten years ago, for the space center. In recent years, we’ve usually gone to Asia during the spring holidays.

Based on the flight tickets I’ve found, two arrival and departure options are available: - Arriving in Buenos Aires and departing from Salvador de Bahia. - Arriving in Santiago, Chile, and still departing from Salvador de Bahia.

We’re considering flying business class on the outbound flight so we arrive a bit more rested. The travel class might influence our choice between itinerary A or B.

We’d like to spend two days at Iguazu Falls (both the Argentine and Brazilian sides), which explains the departure from Brazil.

Initially, we thought about arriving in Buenos Aires and staying in Argentina before heading to Iguazu. However, the itinerary forces us to go back through Buenos Aires.

We love nature. The El Calafate region seems to offer beautiful, easily accessible landscapes. Maybe there’s another area we should prioritize.

Here are two itineraries—what do you think? I know it’s short, but we can’t add any more days. We’ll have to make it work.

Option A: D1(Sat): Flight from France to Buenos Aires – arrival at 9:55 PM. D2(Sun): Visit Buenos Aires D3(Mon): Visit Buenos Aires. D4(Tue): Flight from Buenos Aires to El Calafate – 3.5-hour flight – arrival around midday. D4(Tue) – until D11(Tue) – visit the El Calafate region: El Calafate / 121km / El Chaltén / 12km / Mount Fitz Roy / 4km / Cerro Torre Mountain / 132km / Perito Moreno Glacier / 57km / El Calafate. D11(Tue): Flight to Buenos Aires D12(Wed): Morning flight to Iguazu (Argentine side) – flight at 6:40 AM or 8:10 AM – 2-hour flight. D13(Thu): Half-day on the Brazilian side – flight around 7:00 PM to Salvador de Bahia. D14(Fri): Visit Salvador de Bahia (downtown) D15(Sat): Morning visit + midday departure for the airport – flight at 5:45 PM from Salvador de Bahia D16(Sun): Arrival in France.

This itinerary forces us to pass through Buenos Aires twice.

Option B: D0(Fri): Flight from France to Santiago, Chile – departure at 11:20 PM from CDG. D1(Sat): Arrival at 7:45 AM in Santiago, Chile – hotel + city visit. D2(Sun): Visit Santiago, Chile D3(Mon): Departure for Puerto Natales, Punta Arenas, or El Calafate – to be decided. There’s about a 3-hour flight. We need to check the drop-off fees if we pick up the car in Chile and return it in Argentina – see ADEL RENT A CAR. D3(Mon) – until D10(Mon) – visit the El Calafate region: El Calafate / 121km / El Chaltén / 12km / Mount Fitz Roy / 4km / Cerro Torre Mountain / 132km / Perito Moreno Glacier / 57km / El Calafate. D10(Mon): 3.5-hour flight + visit Buenos Aires. D11(Tue): Visit Buenos Aires D12(Wed): Morning flight to Iguazu (Argentine side) – flight at 6:40 AM or 8:10 AM – 2-hour flight. I tried booking tickets on either Turbus or Pullman from the Alameda station, but neither site lets us enter our nationality because it’s not listed in the dropdown. Is it really necessary to book the bus tickets online, or can we just grab them the morning of—or even 48 hours ahead at the station? Thanks! Odile

Could you recommend any places to stay and neighborhoods in Santiago that are budget-friendly, please? We’d also like to visit Valparaíso despite some safety concerns. For our trip in September 2025 from mid-September to early October (3 weeks), we’ve planned 8 days in San Pedro, then a transit night in Santiago, 8 days in Chilean Patagonia, and 3 days for Santiago/Valparaíso before heading back. Is it possible to easily explore with a rental car from a lodge based in Puerto Natales, including visiting Torres del Paine National Park? Or does that mean too much driving in a day, or would it be better to plan an overnight stay in the park or nearby?

We applied for our international driver’s permit in January 2025 for September, hoping to get it in time—I checked the forum about this. Regarding the car rental, do we really need a credit card (not debit) in the main driver’s name for the deposit?

How far in advance should we book entry tickets to the national parks for this period?

The National Tourism Service SERNATUR published a small graphic summary of the current situation in the tourism sector for each region of the country on August 14th.

It shows the percentage of operational tourist attractions, accommodations, airports, and bus stations across Chile’s sixteen regions.

As you can see, in several regions, no tourist attractions are currently available. In two regions, only half are open.

(A quick but important note: the small village of San Pedro de Atacama is in the Antofagasta administrative region, not the Atacama region.)

The situation for accommodations, regional airports, and bus stations is relatively better.

Some good news, though—Torres del Paine National Park is expected to gradually reopen starting September 1st.

Nous souhaiterions faire un voyage au Chili en 2021. Pourriez vous nous indiquer la meilleure période, tout en sachant que nous voudrions visiter le nord et le Sud, c'est à dire aller jusqu'au Parc National de LAUCA, et pour le sud jusqu'à PUNTA ARENAS;

Nous avions pensé prendre un avion de SANTIAGO à CALAMA, puis louer un véhicule type 4X4 et visiter la partie Nord, est ce faisable, et d'après vous en combien de jours, on avait pensé rester 10 jours, bien sur nous souhaiterions dormir dans des hôtels, avez vous des adresses.

Puis retour à SANTIAGO, prendre un avion jusqu à PUERTO MONTT, louer un véhicule type 4X4 et aller jusqu'à PUNTA ARENAS; est ce possible, et d'après vous peut on parcourir la carretera austral jusqu'au bout (je n'ai pas encore reçu la carte routière que j'ai commandé), faut il prendre des ferrys ?, on avait pensé réserver des hôtels tout le long de la route, est ce possible, avez vous des adresses; pouvez vous nous indiquer le nombre de jours pour visiter le sud, sachant que nous souhaiterions visiter les parcs;

Nous avions pensé partir 5 semaines.

Je suis en train d'organiser un voyage d'un mois au sud du Pérou, en Bolivie et au nord du Chili en juillet et en août. Je compte me déplacer quasi-exclusivement en bus. Je vais finir mon trajet en Bolivie par le Sud Lipez (en partant de Tupiza, et en arrivant à Uyuni), et j'aimerais me rendre de Uyuni à San Pedro de Atacama au Chili. J'ai trouvé des bus sur internet mais très peu d'informations dessus (tarifs, meilleur compagnie), savez-vous comment se passe le passage de la frontière ? De plus, je dois ensuite me rendre à Antofagasta, mais je ne trouve aucune information sur internet puisque que les sites que j'ai trouvé permettent de réserver les bus à peine 3 semaines à l'avance. Savez-vous si il y a des compagnies locales qui font ce trajet ?

Pensez-vous qu'il est plus simple de faire un tour du Salar depuis Tupiza jusqu'à San Pedro directement ? Sachant que je souhaite faire l’ascension d'un volcan, est-ce que ce n'est pas un trajet moins commun (donc plus cher) ?

Ma fiancée et moi même avons fraichement débarqués sur le continent, en Guyane, il y a 2 mois. Initialement nous avions prévu, pour début 2020, de se faire un road-trip rando et faune au Costa Rica mais avec notre déménagement surprise à Cayenne on s'est finalement dit que ça risquait d’être un petit peu redondant avec la Guyane (Foret tropicale, jaguar, perroquets tout ça tout ça...). D'où l'Argentine ! 😉 Enfin plus précisément la Patagonie.

Nous projetons donc de partir 3 semaines en Argentine entre Février et mi-Mars.

L'idée serait de faire un road-trip de 2 semaines et demi en Patagonie, en van si possible, et de finir par un aller-retour de 2-3 jours aux chute d’Iguaçu.

Le mieux semble d'arriver à El Calafate, d'y louer un van et faire une boucle avec El Chalten, si possible Torres del paine, puis descendre sur la terre de feu et Ushuaïa.

Je voulais rapidement voir avec ceux qui ont déjà visité cette région, si ça semble réalisable ? Est-ce que vous avez des loueurs de vans à conseiller ou autres conseils en tout genre ?

Nous passerons quelques jours à San Pedro de Atacama avant de faire une excursion de 4 jours dans le sud Lipez en Bolivie. Pour les pesos chiliens, nous effectuerons des retraits sur place avec la carte bancaire mais pour les bolivianos, comment faire pour s'en procurer avant d'entrer en Bolivie ?

Faut-il faire le change en France avant de partir ? Ou est-ce qu'il y a un bureau de change à San Pedro où nous pourrons récupérer des bolivianos ?

Pour info, nous atterrissons à Santiago et reprenons un avion directement pour Calama donc il ne nous sera pas possible de faire le change dans le centre de Santiago.

Puis je pique au sud, direction Ushuaïa. C'est là que j'ai une interrogation comment remonter au Nord du Chili pour aller au sud de la Bolivie? Deux itinéraires possibles qui parfois se croisent la Ruta 40 en Argentine ou la Carretera Austral au chili? Peut-être certains ont fait les deux et leur avis serait sûrement intéressant.
