The epicentre of the quake was in Burma, about 70km west of Prachuap Khiri Khan, according to the meteorological office in
Hua Hin.
The earthquake was felt in Muang,
Hua Hin, Kui Buri and Pran Buri districts and Sam Roi Yot sub-district in Prachuap Khiri Khan, as well as in
Phetchaburi and Ratchaburi provinces. It caused cracks in the main chapel at Wat Thanoteluang in tambon Bang Khao in
Phetchaburi's
Cha-am district.
No casualties were reported.
Prachuap Khiri Khan governor Kittipong Sunanant said operators of hotels and condominiums were told to look after the structure of their buildings and to be quick in issuing warnings to residents.
Prasert Homdee, director of the King Mongkut Memorial Park of Science and Technology in Prachuap Khiri Khan, said the park's aquarium remained intact after the quake.
However, too many quakes could cause leaks in its water tank.
A close watch is being kept on it all the time.
Winai Thawornnan, director of the Sri Nakharin dam in
Kanchanaburi, said the quake was 700km away from the province's Sri Nakharin and Vajiralongkorn dams.
He said the earthquake had not damaged the dams, but staff were on alert for any possible contingency.
