Hi everyone,
We’re leaving in 9 days for a two-week trip to Madeira, mainly to hike.
From my research, I’ve found that since last year, access to most trails—and systematically for the most popular ones—is now paid. You have to pay an access fee of 4.50 € per person per classified hike in 2026, and even 10.50 € for the most iconic hike: Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo. When paying, you also have to choose a day and a 30-minute time slot for your start time. Of course, this reservation is neither changeable nor refundable, even if the weather that day is terrible.
Personally, given the massive influx of tourists to the island in recent years, I don’t mind paying a fee to help maintain the trails. Similarly, setting a limit on the number of people who can hike them per day is certainly preferable to preserve this priceless heritage.
However, what’s much less fair is that in reality, most of the available spots are reserved: 1/ for Madeira residents (which is normal); 2/ for "economic operators" (meaning local tour operators). For example, if you’re a non-resident (independent tourist), no booking is possible for the Pico Arieiro hike for an early morning start before September! So, unfortunately, we’ll have to skip this hike.
It’s the same issue for Ponta de São Lourenço, the 25 Fontes, Pico Ruivo... in short, all the most popular hikes. Oh well, we’ll skip those too!
So my question is: which hikes do you recommend where we won’t face the huge crowds that the others get? And where we can book the day before for the next day, taking the weather into account?
Finally, a quick accommodation question: we’ve booked the first week in Funchal, but I haven’t decided yet for the second week. Do you have any advice on where to stay in the south or north, preferably avoiding overly concrete-heavy and touristy spots?

A little feedback from our discovery of Madeira—there aren’t many out there! Hoping it might be useful to some of you 🙂
We stayed 7 days in Madeira between May 18th and 25th.
Base: Funchal, the Lido hotel area. A practical neighborhood (lots of restaurants, shops, buses, etc.) but lacking charm. While getting back to Funchal is quick thanks to the road infrastructure, the outskirts of the city are particularly congested in the morning and evening, often due to tourist buses blocking traffic. Plus, even though Funchal enjoys milder weather compared to the rest of the island, you won’t see any sunrises or sunsets there! In short, if I were to do it again, I wouldn’t stay in Funchal for 7 days, even if it’s convenient to unpack once and for all.
Car rental for the week with Avis through locationdevoiture.fr (now Carigami). Zero-excess insurance, two drivers included, full tank on pickup, return with a full tank. After everything I’d read, I was dreading it. No issues at pickup or return. A Citroën C3 with 4,000 km on the clock, which served us perfectly. We brought our own GPS and map, which came in handy. There are signs, of course, but not always where you need them 😛.
Guides & maps: The Rother for hikes, the *Évasion* guide (quite general but very complete), and the Sunflower (borrowed), which I liked less—I found the explanations less clear and a bit messy, but maybe it was just me being unclear 😇. We also had the Freytag & Berndt map at 1:40,000, very useful when exploring the tiniest roads.
Day 1: In the morning, we head to CURRAL DAS FREIRAS. The viewpoint is pretty, very well developed (too much?). We take a short walk down the path as recommended in the Sunflower guide. The environment is wild but doesn’t offer much in terms of views.
We then head east via the expressway. Destination: PONTA DE SÃO LOURENÇO. The sky is overcast there, while just earlier, we were under the sun 😕! We’ll have to deal with the weather’s whims—a constant in Madeira! Off we go for a 3.5-hour round-trip hike, including photo stops, a picnic, and the climb to Ponta do Furado at the very end.
It’s nice, very open, and unlike anywhere else on the island. But it’s also *very* crowded. Mass tourism where everyone’s staring at their feet, barely a smile, hardly a hello 😠. The vibe kind of kills the charm. We were there at lunchtime but didn’t escape the crowds.
Practical detail that matters: no restrooms at the parking lot, none at the Casa do Sardinha, and an environment with no trees or bushes where you can see for miles. Ladies, plan ahead... A hike you should do regardless, with no major difficulty aside from the final climb, though it "undulates" constantly. The trail is perfectly safe.
Back at the parking lot, we take the road to PORTO DA CRUZ, a small village nestled at the foot of the mountain. The natural pools, being cleaned, are empty, and the seaside promenade, splashed by waves, feels a bit gloomy. The charm isn’t there. Return to Funchal via PORTELA and the MIRADOURO DOS INGLESES, which is tricky to find—hidden at the back of a lovely park, tended like an old lady from the 19th century, maybe the former owner of the place...

We’re a family of five (our kids are 6, 15, and 19) and we’d love to go somewhere warm with our feet in the water during the first two weeks of August 2026. We’d also like to do some cultural visits and a bit of hiking. We were thinking of Guadeloupe—I know it’s not the ideal time of year, but we don’t have much flexibility. Is it really a bad idea, or can we still enjoy it despite the weather?
Another option for us would be Madeira, which seems more reliable weather-wise, but it sounds like the beaches are less accessible and not as nice.
We haven’t really looked elsewhere because everything else (except the Canary Islands, Balearics, or Corsica) seems way too expensive. But if you’ve got any recommendations, don’t hesitate—we’re just starting to look into it.

Hi everyone. Good evening!
I’m back from Sententon. I’ve recovered now. What a beautiful, beautiful island—did it both ways.
The crossing I’d call the "Madman’s Crossing" (a nod to another well-known one) is the one from Tarrafal to Ponta do Sol, which I did in 4.5 hours without speeding like Gonzalez.
Then there’s what I’d call the "Grogue Diagonal"—the north-south route from Ribeira do Paul to the Janela Lighthouse, passing through Cova, Pico da Cruz, and Silva. A day and a half of pure enjoyment, wrapping up my visit to the island in supreme beauty.
In my opinion, here are the island’s 7 must-dos:
- The most stunning *bordeira* – the *bordeira do norte*
- The most fantastic – the climb from João do Bento to Orgueiro
- The most pleasant – the *vereda* Cova/Pico da Cruz/Silva
- The most overrated – the northern coastal path
- The most beautiful paved section – Ribeira de Penede’s lower part
- The most grueling – Figueira de Cima to Chupador
- The toughest – the climb to Salto Preto
And for any hiker, the Norte plateau is a must. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it to Tope de Coroa—my only rainy day—but it was still good, even with the summit shrouded in clouds all day.
Here are my initial thoughts. I’m happy to share more with anyone planning the same crossings. I’m currently posting the route details on my blog and might share a few here. We'd like to go on a week-long trip next February with our two kids (13 and 4 years old) to either Madeira or the Canary Islands.
For this vacation, we're looking for a relaxing week with the option to go hiking, and where the kids can enjoy the pool... We were thinking of an all-inclusive package, even though it's not really our thing (we usually prefer road trips and organizing everything ourselves) just so we don’t have to do anything—especially not cooking! 😎
But I looked into it, and hotels with this package are just massive: 500, 800 rooms 😮, that’s not going to work at all!! And the price for four of us—yikes! So we thought about half-board instead, in a smaller resort. Really, we’d like to avoid concrete everywhere—we prefer nature!
Anyway, I’d love to hear your tips for planning our trip. If you have other destinations that might fit, I’m all ears. We don’t want to go too far, and temperatures around 15°C would be perfect. We want to relax, have a pool for the kids, but still have the chance to explore the area (hiking, etc.).

April 2020, I was supposed to go to Uzbekistan, and October 2020 to Texas: both canceled due to COVID. Summer vacations in 2020 weren’t gonna be fun. Optimistic, I’d rescheduled both trips for roughly the same dates in 2021: the first was canceled again because of COVID, the second due to U.S. entry conditions (still COVID-related!). Summer vacations in 2021 *had* to be more fun, or I was gonna lose it!!! Plus, our parents are dealing with health issues, which is weighing us down—we really need to get away!
So I looked into where we could go, somewhere we could live almost normally. I saw that Madeira had implemented strict COVID measures but that life on the island was pretty chill afterward. For me, Madeira = sun + hiking + landscapes. BINGO.
Day 1: The flight and arrival on the island
Flight with TAP via Lisbon, departing around noon. We wore our masks properly on the plane. (My last flight was to Portugal, and I told myself I’d break the jinx and leave COVID behind us.) Layover in Lisbon, then an afternoon flight to Madeira. The landing went smoothly, no wind. Cristiano Ronaldo Airport in Funchal is known for being one of the trickiest in the world due to crosswinds. The checks were standard, except COVID added an extra step. Before the trip, I had to fill out a questionnaire (Madeira Safe). Once there, a group of young people—probably students—greeted us, each with a tablet. The health questionnaire and vaccine check were super quick. Then we saw a doctor, and just like that, we were wished a great stay. Honestly, it was so well organized that it only took 10 minutes. We wouldn’t put our masks back on until we returned!
A taxi took us to our hotel in the hills above Funchal—a pretty upscale place, which isn’t our usual style, but we needed it this time! Dinner on the hotel terrace with the city at our feet. Amazing!

Le 12 août je dois partir à Funchal avec la compagnie TUI. Cependant, j'ai lu récemment que l'aéroport est l'un des plus dangereux au monde et comme indiqué dans le titre, j'ai une peur panique de l'avion.
Alors je voudrais avoir vos avis sur l'atterrissage à Funchal ou même sur la compagnie TUI (si c'est une bonne compagnie, si leurs avions sont bien sécurisés, etc.) car à 15 jours de mon voyage j'angoisse comme jamais !

Nous souhaitons partir entre 2 et 3 semaines fin septembre - début octobre.
Nous ne connaissons aucune des 3 îles citées, et aimerions donc savoir laquelle est la plus appropriée à cette période pour pouvoir les découvrir sous un climat agréable, faire de belles balades (pas trop exigeantes), déjeuner en terrasse (et même dîner le soir si possible, mais je ne crois pas que ce soit faisable en octobre). Nous comptons louer une voiture et dormir en moyenne 3 nuits par logement. Si Açores, on choisirait 2-3 îles, mais je n'ai pas encore creusé la destination. Je suppose que certaines îles sont plus arrosées que d'autres.

je vais passer une semaine à semaine à Madère en avril et je compte louer une voiture à l'aéroport. D'après les remarques de nombreux voyageurs les compagnies ne semblent pas toujours très honnêtes, en particulier concernant les franchises et le remboursement de la caution.
Auriez-vous le nom d'une ou plusieurs compagnies à me recommander?

Aprés avoir épluché les forums sur le sujet épineux des locations de voiture à Madère dénonçant les nombreuses arnaques, j' ai d'abord renoncé à me tourner vers les grands groupes style rentalcars etc avec lesquels il est possible d'obtenir des cashback ;
pour n'avoir à faire qu' a un seul interlocuteur : le loueur indépendant..
J'ai finalement fait une selection de 2 agences compte tenu des prix proposés , des evaluations , de la caution réclamée ou non et de la transparence des informations sur leurs sites: funchaleasy.com et rentcarfunchal.com.
J'aimerais avoir des retours de personnes ayant loué dans ces agences avant de choisir.

J'ai prévu d'aller à Madère en juin pendant 15 jours. Est-il preferâble de passer par une agence pour un autotour ou de prendre un vol sec et des réservations d'hôtels. Plusieurs logements sont-ils nécessaires pour parcourir toute l'île ou un seul point de chute convient il?

Voilà je me demandais s'il y avait des risques de contracter le virus Zika à Madère. Je suis enceinte de 2 mois et ne veux prendre aucun risque. En cherchant sur internet, les infos que je trouve datent de mai 2016 et disent : "L’agence internationale estime ainsi que le risque est élevé sur l’île de Madère et la côte nord-est de la Mer noire, zones où le moustique Aedes aegypti, principal vecteur du virus, est durablement implanté." Mais c'est tout. Y a t il eu des cas? Y a t il un risque? Il m'est impossible de trouver l'info. Alors quelqu'un sur place peut il me renseigner ou à défaut me dire qui contacter? Merci par avance.

En Avril 2018, nous avons séjourné sur l'île de Madère, fidèle à sa réputation d'île aux fleurs. Les paysages rencontrés furent très variés et sauvages et l'île est le paradis des randonneurs, tout ce que nous aimons. Ses multiples Levadas, réseaux de canaux d'irrigation de l'île, offrent des balades inoubliables au travers de tunnels creusés dans la montagne, et de petits chemins perdus dans la forêt. Nous garderons un super souvenir de cette île de l'atlantique.

Je compte passer une grosse semaine (9 jours) avant mi-décembre à Madère ou aux Açores. Je ne connais ni l'un ni l'autre.
Les Açores m'attirent plus, car plus sauvage, relief plus doux, en ciblant une île ou deux seulement, vu le peu de temps imparti, quitte à y revenir. C'est mon choix originel. Néanmoins, le climat n'a pas l'air terrible en décembre, instable, pluvieux, peu ensoleillé (et frais?).
Alors j'ai pensé à me rabattre sur Madère, plus simple à faire en si peu de temps et au climat plus ensoleillé. Ce n'était pas mon idée d'origine mais ça semble très beau, même si plus urbanisé (et plus cher?) alors peut-être puis-je y aller en décembre et pour les Açores, eh bien ce sera pour une autre fois...
Encore hésitant, je vous pose la question pour ceux qui connaissent les deux.

Je serai à Madère avec un ami pendant 1 petite semaine (du 29 avril au 5 mai, soit 5 jours complets).
On souhaiterait ne pas avoir à louer de voiture et bivouaquer en montagne. Pensez-vous qu'il est possible d'enchainer des randos du guide Rother pour faire un circuit de 5 jours, a priori concentrées dans le centre de l'Île ? Les distances et les dénivelés de nous font pas trop peurs, nous sommes plutôt entrainés (l'été dernier nous avons fait le GR20 sans soucis). Sinon est-il facile de trouver des points d'eau pour se ravitailler et poser la tente "facilement" ?

Voici ce qui vient de nous arriver à Madère: Nous avons loué par internet un véhicule auprès l’agence Sixt de l’aéroport de Funchal (île de Madeira) pour une période comprise entre le 13 et le 21 janvier 2018 . Une caution de 300 euros était prélevée de notre compte bancaire via une opération carte bleue. Nous prenions en compte un véhicule Nissan Note affichant 30000 km au compteur . L’employé nous demandait d’effectuer une vérification de l’état de la carrosserie et nous constations diverses rayures déjà mentionnées sur le contrat de location. Par contre cet employé ne nous demandait pas de vérifier l’état mécanique de la voiture : si elle démarrait, si elle consommait de l’huile, si les phares s’allumaient, si elle freinait ...... si la boite de vitesse et son embrayage fonctionnaient. Ceci est normal puisque le loueur s’engage par contrat à fournir à son client un véhicule en état de fonctionner. Nous quittions donc l’aéroport pour nous rendre dans le Nord de l’île. Pour information, il s’agit d’un endroit montagneux où les routes sont faites de montées et de descentes. Aux premières montées effectuées, non mari , conducteur du véhicule m'indiquait que cette voiture pouvait avoir un problème d’embrayage mais n’étant en aucun cas mécaniciens, nous poursuivions notre chemin. Après une vingtaine de kilomètres parcourus, ses soupçons se confirmaient notamment à cause de l’odeur qui régnait dans l’habitacle. Étant proches de l’arrivée de la maison d’hôte où nous avions loué, nous décidions de ramener dès le lendemain la voiture d’autant plus que notre logeuse à qui nous avions exposé le problème, ne parvenait pas à joindre l’agence Sixt de l’aéroport. Le 14 janvier 2018 vers 10h00, nous rejoignions l’aéroport, signalions le problème rencontré en indiquant que l’embrayage de la voiture était défectueux. Nous avons parcouru moins de 50 kilomètres entre la prise en compte le 13 janvier cette Nissan et sa restitution le 14 janvier. L’employé effectuait un état des lieux sur lequel nous mentionnions ce problème mécanique, il nous faisait signer la restitution de ce véhicule puis nous remettait les clefs d’une Renault Clio en échange de la voiture défectueuse. Il n’évoquait nullement notre responsabilité dans la dégradation de l’embrayage de cette voiture et de notre possible participation à un paiement de frais, ce qui relève du bon sens car nous ne savons pas comment nous aurions pu dégrader un embrayage en si peu de kilomètres. Nous ne rencontrions aucune difficulté avec ce nouveau véhicule . Quoiqu’il en soit nous recevions le 29 janvier 2018 un mail de l’agence Sixt de Funchal nous expliquant en langue anglaise qu’elle avait du procédé au changement de l’embrayage et considérait que notre responsabilité était engagée. A ce mail, l’agence joignait la facture de réparation de l’embrayage (815,16 €)en précisant qu’elle allait nous prélever de 995 €. Je pense que les éléments (matériel, légal et moral) constitutifs de l’escroquerie sont réunis. En effet comment pouvions-nous savoir que cette agence allait nous remettre une voiture défectueuse avec des problèmes mécaniques. Je ne vois pas comment nous aurions pu casser l’embrayage après un parcours de 50 kilomètres. . Que fallait-il faire ? garder la voiture durant tout le séjour et ne rien signaler au risque de tomber en panne? Je suis écœurée par les méthodes utilisées par cette agence . J'ai contacté SIXT France qui m'a proposé de faire l'intermédiaire avec SIXT portugal. Je suis dans l'attente de la résolution du problème.
