Hi there. I’m looking for a solo trip to Greece or its islands very soon—hotels or resorts that are wheelchair-accessible, with adapted rooms and bathrooms. I’d love to soak up the Greek atmosphere and eat well. Any recommendations would be especially welcome. Lupeta.

Hello,

You might want to narrow down your search geographically—Greece has many regions on the mainland and over 150 islands worth visiting. However, keep in mind that areas like the Peloponnese are 70% mountainous, so expect uneven terrain, stairs, and streets that aren’t often wheelchair-friendly. The same goes for famous islands like Santorini.

From there, you can use Booking.com and its accommodation search filters (at the very bottom) that include accessibility for the property in general and the rooms in particular. I wouldn’t recommend resort-style hotels if you’re looking for authenticity. Most of them are tourist factories—usually low-end—with service and amenities that have nothing to do with real Greek hospitality, not to mention the semi-industrial food you’ll "enjoy." In Greece, there are far more family-run accommodations than hotels, and many offer the same services as hotels, plus the added bonus of being close to the owners, who’ll do their best to make your stay enjoyable. So, you don’t need to limit your search to just hotels.

Note that ferries are equipped to welcome people using wheelchairs, and the crew is used to it.
