My husband has a disability following a stroke. He walks with a cane and gets tired easily. Do you think we could travel to Armenia? Are Yerevan and the museums accessible for people with reduced mobility? Is the Geghard Monastery accessible? Thanks.

Hi Arlette, Since no one has replied to your message, I’ll give you some details that might not be very precise. Fifteen years ago, I traveled to Armenia with another backpacker. We visited the monasteries almost one by one, those that were along our route using public transport or hitchhiking. All the monasteries are single-story, but to get inside, there are a few wide steps. With a cane or the arm of a companion, it shouldn’t be too difficult. The floors of the oldest monasteries are covered with original stone slabs—not always very smooth—and somewhat uneven, so be careful and focus on the ground while getting help. I’ll remind you that there are a few benches to rest on.

The Geghard Monastery is one of the oldest; it’s the one with the Holy Lance. There are chapels and monks' cells built into the rock, and I avoided exploring everything. At the time, I wasn’t disabled like I am now, but I was extremely careful not to fall. This monastery is very busy, especially on Sundays, so go during the week and hire a car with a driver from the nearest town.

Yerevan Museum: I can’t tell you much more—I visited without any issues and don’t remember any particular difficulties.

The Armenian people are extremely welcoming and will help you without any problem. If there are communication issues, they’ll use their smartphones to find someone who speaks French so you can explain your situation.

As with any disability, plan for what I call "extra time": time for a visit by a person with a disability = time for a visit by a non-disabled person + one-third more time... meaning take even more time and get help.

A thousand apologies for not responding as you might have hoped. I think you and your husband can enjoy a trip to Armenia—this disability shouldn’t be an obstacle to visiting this country.

And when you return, please take the time to share a trip report with us.

Hi there,

No difficulties visiting YEREVAN itself. The museums are accessible. The Geghard Monastery is also accessible. Ideally, if you can, rent a car. Not much traffic.
