So where are they and what are they doing?

I have to say, the "neighboring forum" (as you call it—aren’t we allowed to name it here on VF?) is way more active these days than VF... Unfortunately, VF was closed for too long, and in my opinion, it’s started to feel a bit outdated...
JO Jojoone1 Globetrotter ·
Don’t tell me the thousand participants recruited... on VF suddenly got younger 😎

Not the participants, but the site itself... or maybe it’s because the closure reminds me of the awful COVID period, and the fact that we’ve moved from one world to another with VF closed in between makes me feel like I’ve kind of moved on from this site...

But personally, I have to say that the numerous criticisms toward the founder of VF’s stance on COVID policy—coming from travel lovers and therefore freedom advocates—really surprised me... borderline shocked me.

So, me who used to visit this site daily before it closed... now I only stop by from time to time...

What you're saying is interesting. I might sound like a broken record, but I'll definitely come back to this... What really surprised me was his complete "turnaround." He'd made a biting remark about my criticism of how strictly the lockdown was managed, and then a few months later, he seemed to do a total 180, taking positions I found completely unreasonable—especially when it came to vaccination...

What a shame the main absentees didn’t speak up.

Good evening, haha, that’s a good one! 🙂 How can absentees speak up when they’re absent? The moment those so-called absentees log on, they’re no longer absent. Anyway, it’s the old chicken-and-egg question.
JO Jojoone1 Globetrotter ·
I feel rewarded when I’ve managed to make someone laugh in a day; that was the goal, after all. 😇

Oh, the egg and the chicken—that was my dad’s argument for justifying the existence of God. The Brothers made him swallow that one 😎 back in the day between two whacks with a wooden stick as punishment for mistakes and sins. True, a nail only goes into wood properly if you hit it hard.

hi, what do you mean by "the brothers"?
JO Jojoone1 Globetrotter ·
Those from the Most Holy Catholic Church, at the boarding school of the Saint Joseph Institute in Matzenheim, run at that time by the Brothers of Christian Doctrine.

Even though he especially loved Edith Piaf, they got it into their heads to teach him how to play the piano. Every failed attempt ended with a ruler smack on his fingers. I don’t know if the ruler wore out, but they eventually gave up in the face of such a lack of talent. That’s the only thing he ever wanted to tell me about it.

Okay, did you read what I heard right?

Members who play shy are like old couples who have nothing left to say in the face of life’s pointlessness. 😛 😛 But traveling *always* sparks memories, emotions, tough moments, and moments of happiness.

Does it still take time for some to discover the site or learn that it's active again?

I just found out today by chance (while cleaning up my "favorites" links) that the site is active again. If there was a message about it, it must have ended up in my spam folder.

Where have the old-timers from the site gone, and what are they doing with their time now?

Some of us, including me, are still working! The time I used to spend chatting on VF has easily been filled by other collaborative activities.

Hey, even hidden behind usernames, the new generations are total scaredy-cats and afraid of being "found out." And since most travelers go through agencies or all-inclusive deals, what do you expect them to say besides "I chilled, I visited this country, I was there and here’s my selfie to prove it"? "Chilling" being the trendy word for "doing nothing." The braver ones might admit, "I got ripped off" 😂

Actually, seeing the number of visitors online and the number of participants, I can’t help but think that individualism and selfishness have taken yet another step forward.

Hi Jojoone, I don’t think it’s due to bad intentions from the participants. The reason is actually pretty simple: if you check the "stay logged in" box on this forum, as soon as you start your internet browser, you’re automatically logged in. That explains it!
DJ Djalma Globetrotter ·
Just because people are logged in doesn’t mean they’re active on VF. As soon as you leave the site, you’re no longer "Online".

That wasn’t really the point. What I mean is that the site is getting busy again, but with less lively sections.

On one hand, because there are half as many active contributors due to the other forum, but mostly because a lot of people just come to gather info without participating at all. More than before, anyway.

Hey Oh, I misunderstood your message then...

For one thing, because there are half as many big participants due to the other forum

I pretty much only check the forum I’m posting on right now. You’ve got to see that the forum for well-known publications—like the one with the backpacker on the cover—is, let’s just say, poorly structured, to put it politely. Anyway, have you heard any news about that Japan and Paris specialist I had some pretty heated exchanges with in the past? Since the question of this thread is "what happened to them?"

hi Jojoone, what are they up to and what do they do? There’s someone who created a profile apparently living in the flat country and offering personal escort services in the discussion thread about the Manicouagan Reservoir in Quebec. Hello everyone,

I’m one of those who come by here much less often. Tonight, I finally had a moment, so I wandered around the forum a bit at random… and it made me happy to be back in this section. During Covid, I kept traveling, but to “familiar” destinations that were easier to manage. And when I wanted to discover new countries, since VF was closed, I got into the habit of turning to Facebook: I’d find dedicated groups, join them, and gather some of the info I needed. It’s convenient—all in one place, I’ve got my trips, my friends, my passions… my whole little virtual life. And let’s be honest: I have less time than before. Instead of planning my trips down to the last detail, I’m running around, working, and struggling to scrape together a few hours, and when I do, I read. I don’t think I’m the only one in this situation. As for forums… I think the times have just changed. We’re more into images, videos, quick and fun content that we consume and then forget. VF is more “laid-back,” more long-lasting. And that’s exactly what makes it strong: a solid reference for those who like to take their time, really share, and keep a record. Even if the traffic isn’t what it was in the days of 1.3 million members 😉, the forum still has its place—maybe less noisy, but still essential.[:)

And where will those who’ve come back and keep answering travelers’ questions go? On WhatsApp, if I’m to believe two messages posted today by VF, since that’s where requests will be made.

Suggestion sent today by VF in response to questions posted... the day before:

Hello,

We’ve set up a WhatsApp group called "Expert Helping Hand" so you can ask locals your questions if you’re not getting enough or satisfactory answers on VF.

We realized that some questions were going unanswered or weren’t fully meeting expectations. Here’s the link if you’d like to ask your question about your kids in Indonesia: chat.whatsapp.com/H7vo93maA6XJD2WHAZcoZ7

It’s completely free, of course.

JO Jojoone1 Globetrotter ·
I’m not the best person to answer that. As an old fogey, I only discovered WhatsApp a year ago, and I’ve just barely opened a Facebook account. And even then, it was kind of out of necessity.

Here’s another reminder that the world changes at lightning speed, and we’ve got to unlearn some things just as fast as we had to learn them in the first place.

This catchy and somewhat mysterious title comes from several questions I’ve been asking myself.

VF has been back open for a reasonable number of weeks and months now. The number of visitors overall matches past averages, but the number of members online in the last 24 hours seems relatively lower than before.

Yet, to my great surprise, I’m seeing fewer travel journals, far fewer messages, and far fewer questions. I don’t see many new registered users online, and I see a number of members who are connected but not participating—or no longer participating.

Something’s not adding up for me because, in my opinion, VF is still appealing, and I don’t see which other sites could compete with it.

Was there a real break between pre- and post-Covid? Does it just take more time for some people to discover the site or learn that it’s active again? Do people now prefer a form of quick consumption on sites like FB or others I don’t know about? Where have the old-timers gone, and what are they doing with their time now? What’s really going on?

Hi everyone. I can confirm that the forum had reopened, then announced its definitive closure while waiting for a buyer, so that’s probably the main reason for the disappearance of contributors. Personally, I only just found out today that we can post again after receiving an alert about a discussion I was following before.
