It was a first for me, Michel, but you’re giving me ideas: since round-the-world trips are overrated, we could do a tour of the *middle* of the world instead 😄 🥳. Too bad Mike Horn already thought of it 😆

Hey Jean François, Given my ignorance, where *is* Socotra? I looked it up on Google. Oh right, I’ve heard of it Is it safe to go there at the moment? And that’s a genuine question 🙂 But yeah, I won’t be going this year 😎 See you soon,

Just about Socotra: right now it’s safe, tourism is steadily increasing, and they’re going from one flight a week to two. Departing from Abu Dhabi.

It’s off the coast of Yemen and the United Arab Emirates.

It’s within my plans for February 2026 (oops, not 2016!) ... thanks Solène

So, before we grow webbed feet, we decide to head north for a cultural stop (for once). On the way, we hope to finally see the Picos de São Tomé, the area’s natural beauty—but no luck again (and that’s putting it mildly) 😅.

Today’s destination is the Roça in the village of São João dos Angolares, a local celebrity.

A *roça* is an old agricultural estate from the time of Portuguese colonization in the 19th century.

There were over 100 of them across the country, all following the same model: the owner’s house, slave quarters, a school, a hospital, and buildings for processing coffee or cocoa.

Up to 2,000 people could live on-site. Well, don’t get your hopes up. In 2019, it’s a bit of a mess—most of the *roças* we see are just ruins and crumbling homes for the families still living there (many never managed to leave, so the *roça* became their village). All of it set against breathtaking views and lush vegetation (thanks, monsoon).

Basically, it’s another real heart-stealer (yes, I know, *again*).

A few, luckily, have been saved to continue cocoa production or to serve as guesthouses and restaurants.

The *roça* in Angolares is probably the island’s most famous, thanks to its owner—a colorful character and chef who regularly appears on TV.

We made a *very* pleasant stop there, in a place that feels timeless—a curious mix of ancestral architecture, art galleries, and spicy or fruity gastronomy 😋.

See you soon for the finale! !

All good things must come to an end, and here we are at the end of this beautiful journey!

For a grand finale, we chose to return to Morro Peixe.

Lovely reunion with Olivia, who has one eye fewer but even bigger smiles now 😊. Spotting me from her balcony, she calls out: "Oh mi amiga, you’re back! Come, let me introduce you to my family." And there I am in her house, shaking hands with her husband Orlando and her grandchildren, Patricia, Thaïs, and Carligno. We’ll spend some time on the sand while Lulu splashes around.

We’ll also meet up with the kids from the other beach, full of joy and high spirits.

I even got some big hugs... until a 4x4 full of tourists arrived and they ran off to beg for candy (and there goes the dream of the disinterested local 🤑).

Vanilda and her friends

Then back to the capital before departure: its market, of course, and a lovely musical evening with Caipirinhas flowing (#IthinkIhaddtoomany 😅).

So, despite a fuel shortage, two flat tires, dozens of mosquito bites, two spectacular falls for me (luckily no damage!), and liters of rain, this trip was just absolutely amazing!!

If they need one, we’ve found the slogan for the tourism ministry: "If you want adventure, the real kind, come visit São Tomé!" 😅

Thanks to everyone for following along. It’s time for us to fly off to new horizons... and that’s as soon as tomorrow—woohoo! ✈️😅

I’m the only one—so far—answering your question, and I’ll be totally honest: not really 😕 It’s not your feedback or your way of telling the story—realistic and fun—that’s the issue! On the contrary, you’re so enthusiastic! Let’s just say a bunch of other places are catching my eye before this one, and I can only afford one “big” trip a year (though that doesn’t stop me from taking little getaways nearby with low-cost flights). The truth is, I followed this travel journal because it’s *you* 😉

No worries Kate. It's true that it's quite a unique destination that, in fact, should never be touched by mass tourism. Anyway, did my write-up on São Tomé inspire any readers to check it out?

I wanted to reread your whole trip before replying, but I didn’t have time this weekend. You made some amazing connections—that’s what you’re always looking for in your travels. Personally, I don’t have your knack for connecting with locals, and honestly, that’s not really my travel style, so after reading your São Tomé post, I won’t be adding it to my to-do list. Still, I *always* enjoy reading your stories—"as always" 😊. As for your photos, yeah, the resolution isn’t great, but it doesn’t bother me personally. Not sure why—maybe VoyageForum’s compression?

Most importantly, don’t change a thing about how you tell your stories... For me, a few photos really enhance the narrative, so seriously, don’t change anything. I always get so much joy reading about CriCri and Lulu’s adventures 😉

Hey Christelle... It’s an island that caught my attention about ten years ago... I’d spotted an isolated summit at 2,000m and thought it must be worth venturing up there. There was even a VoyageForum member who talked about hiking possibilities and mentioned a book had been published on the topic... I never found it, and that member never replied. Such a shame. With ten fewer years on the clock, I’d have definitely given it a shot... 😏

Hi Jean Michel, Yemen was a big traveler on VF, who connected with Jacques, the author of the book that’s no longer in print. But if you follow the link I’m sharing, you can download all 118 pages—a goldmine of tips for trekking as well as accommodations, from the most basic to the most comfortable... and I checked, I downloaded it myself.

For trekking, pick your dates carefully because the island is under an equatorial rain regime.

Take your time on this island and understand why it’s called the "chocolate island"... cocoa is grown without fertilizers or pesticides (too expensive for them), so everything is organic, which requires a lot of "elbow grease" and isn’t very well paid. The rural population crowds into the buildings of the *Rocas*, the plantations built by the Portuguese long before independence. A few buildings have been renovated, as Christelle mentioned, to house tourists or for restoration.

The country is very small, with a population of 300,000 and few resources beyond agriculture. The population is very young, and kids play all around the *rocas*, especially if they’re not all in school... and I’m sorry they now ask for candy.

And the country is eyeing China for the construction of a deep-water port... São Tomé broke off diplomatic relations with Taiwan to focus on this project.

That’s all I can say—I went there in 2017, but since I can’t travel anymore due to back problems, I keep up a bit with the countries I’ve visited, and São Tomé is one of them, a real heartstealer because of its people.

Hi Bruno, I’ve agreed with Christelle to help complete her travel journal. It won’t be a journal in the usual sense... it’ll probably be easier to make it a separate topic.

If the text is ready, I still have to sort the photos and, most importantly, figure out how to insert all of that into the little space allowed... I’m not great with computers and I’ve never uploaded photos to VF before. So there’ll be some trial and error, and I’ll need time—so please be patient. It’s to make you want to visit São Tomé beyond just the kids... and it’s possible. Françoise

Blurry photos are hard to make out. Personally, I don’t get it—I just use my basic Galaxy, take care with framing, and try not to move when I snap the shot. Sometimes I take 2 or 3 just to be safe.

That said, if Christelle’s constantly trembling with excitement during her discoveries, I can see why. 😉

Yes, Christelle, the main thing is that you enjoy yourself 😄 and when we read your travel journals, no worries, it really comes through 👍 Photos are secondary—they just capture a moment and fuel memories. If you like them that way, why bother? 🤷 One of my photography teachers told me: "What about you? Do you like your photo? Yes? That’s what matters—don’t try to please everyone, you won’t succeed." Your journals breathe life and good vibes; your photos are just accessories to enhance your writing 😊

We’re in an era where mediocre or bad work is encouraged just to avoid making someone uncomfortable. That’s nice and all, but that’s not how progress happens. It’s rigor and high standards that drive things forward. And what teacher would like a blurry photo? An impressionist one? 🙁

Come on, Joel, excuse me, but my travel journals aren’t pretentious at all—I’m not planning to exhibit them in an art gallery! The only point is to share some corners of the world with people who want to know a bit more about the vibe you find there. The day I get 1,000 followers on my journals, I’ll fix that issue, but for now, there are 12 of you—11 of whom don’t care about the blurry photos 🤷‍♂️

I wasn’t talking about blurry photos at all when I quoted my teacher. To me, Christelle’s photos aren’t blurry—I said earlier that I think it’s a compression issue on VoyageForum because I checked MyAtlas. What I meant: in photojournalism, like in travel journals, you capture the moment. These aren’t studio shots where every detail matters—framing and lighting are secondary. In photography, the photo should please the person who took it, and that’s not about encouraging mediocrity. You can’t improve if you don’t like what you’re doing. A beautiful blurry photo is actually really hard to pull off—there are techniques you need to master. The teacher I mentioned is super demanding. If it’s not technically solid, it’s trash.
