A lovely wander at the mercy of the wind in this amazing Rajasthan

I’m not an India expert, but before my last trip, I had no idea that future spouses undergo an astrological study. If the charts aren’t compatible, it could put the whole marriage in question! It’s not just about family pressure... 😕

"Do you know if these practices are still current?"

Yes, it’s still a very common practice and even widely spread. But unlike a few decades ago, families now give future spouses more or less opportunities to get to know each other. A friend from Rajasthan once told me that between the complex caste rules around marriages, family expectations, and astrological factors, there were probably no more than two or three girls he could marry...
AL Aleph240758 Veteran ·
Yes, it still exists. A friend from Tamil Nadu told me about his nephew whose parents were looking for a future wife for him. This young man has a good education and a good job, but he's approaching thirty and starting to lose his hair—and in India, hair is very important. They consulted agencies to find a good family and an astrologer. Since birth, this young man has had an issue in his astrological chart, and the families of the girls selected keep refusing the marriage because of it. Will he find a wife? To this day, he's still single, even though he's quite charming... Not easy, even in 2025.

In Indian astrology, some people born under particular Mars influences are called "manglik." The belief is that they’ll inevitably cause their spouse’s death at some point—unless they marry another manglik. Needless to say, finding a marriage partner is a living nightmare for them... Even without being manglik, there are often complications in astrological charts that the Brahmin astrologer can fix—for a hefty fee, of course. 😏

Yes, it still exists. A friend from TN told me about his nephew whose parents were looking for a future bride for him.

There’s a fascinating docuseries on Netflix that follows the journey of a strong and endearing Indian matchmaker. A matchmaker who works in the 21st century between India and the United States, at the request of families or young single Indians. Some have been living in the US for decades, working there... but when it comes to marriage, the Western veneer fades in favor of tradition.

Admittedly, the individuals she tries to match are from an affluent background... but the series, which is informative, touching, and addictive, is certainly representative. Skillfully made, it highlights—without judgment—the contrasts and paradoxes of those who live torn between two cultures.

Hi Christelle, I’d fallen a bit behind on reading this travel journal, but I’ve just caught up on everything. Bravo on your writing! It’s such a pleasure to read you. For voting on the next travel journal(s), I’m picking 3: Benin / Seychelles / São Tomé

Oh wow, you’re such a foodie, Catherine! 😄

One upside of the health crisis is that I’ve got a few lined up in advance!

So let’s make it a game if you’re up for it 😉.

I’m inviting all the readers of this travel journal to vote to help me pick the next one I’ll share with you.

Here are the options:

1 – Benin: a country that’s really worth getting to know, with incredibly welcoming people.

2 – The Mascarene Islands, especially Mauritius, which we explored fully, and the surprising Rodrigues.

3 – São Tomé Island, off the coast of Gabon, with its beautifully preserved nature.

4 – Kenya, self-drive, with some wildlife but mostly lots of human encounters.

5 – The Seychelles, far from all-inclusive resorts, with hikes across the classic trio: Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue.

Get typing, and sorry to the lovers of the Americas and Asia! 😅

Have a great day, everyone!

A little late... but I’m voting too 😏. I’d say "all of them!"... but Kenya in self-drive is just as rare as São Tomé ;)... so, Kenya!

Oh, thanks for your originality, Muriel—you're the only one who picked this! 😄 But I’m afraid I’ll be monologuing to an empty room about Kenya because 95% of people interested in that destination go for the wildlife and wide-open spaces, not to "meet" a people and immerse themselves in local life. Of course, one isn’t better than the other—it’s just a matter of taste. But since we’re greedy like that, we tried to do both! 😋🍽️

If I thought like that, I wouldn’t have made travel journals about Thailand just because most people go to Phuket or other islands, or because many are interested in Pattaya, etc.

You can feel proud and original for showing a side of a destination that isn’t what you see everywhere.

Actually, Christelle, I’m one of those who went to Kenya mainly to see the animals, but that’s no reason to skip your travel journal. On the contrary, I think a different approach to a country can be really interesting—and who knows, maybe I’ll go back and experience it differently ;). In the meantime, no matter which destination you share, I’ll be there [:).

Hi Joel, It's true... but I find it pretty demoralizing to keep a travel journal where no one chimes in (even if some people read it). It happened to me with Greece, and I felt like I was wasting my time 😕.

If we're talking about the one on the Peloponnese, 14 participants and 6,000 views—we’d call that a wild success today ! You’re forgetting to mention that this journal is from August 2020, when the forum was in total upheaval before imploding !

I’d have said Kenya for a self-drive trip too. But if you base your travel choices on how many readers your future travel journal might get, you’ll really limit yourself After all, you’re traveling for yourself, not for potential readers! I was asking myself the same question because I’m currently in Senegal, staying in different places with my in-laws for total immersion, and I was thinking that if I wrote a travel journal, it might stick out a bit among all the requests for motorcycle rentals and permits to cross Mauritania 😎

Christelle, like all of us here, ONLY travels to get a big audience for her future VoyageForum journal! 😉 I think her “poll” was just about setting priorities for where to share her stories.

As for your Senegal journal, of course it’ll stand out—but that’s exactly what’ll make it a hit! An “inside look” at travel—lots of forum members here will love it (well, the ones who are still around…)

Otherwise, just out of curiosity, are any of you here who took part in HOLI? How was it? On the spot, I heard some not-so-cool things. The next day in Bundi, we were at the hotel with some Spanish girls who had powder all the way down their backs and stomachs 🤭. They told us the big game was to pull their T-shirts to put the powder inside (and hands too, I imagine 😅)

Well, I’ve been wanting to share my Holi in Nawalgarh for a long time! It was more like: sex, sex, sex, and more sex! The women’s festival they’d told us about the night before! A weird take on Women’s Day, if you ask me. Anyway, on another note, I really love your travel journal—I just picked up reading it again, as promised. I read, I read, I read, I laugh a lot too, and as I go through this travel journal, I realize why some women told me I was completely wrong when I said that India has changed a lot. But Rajasthan is a state apart, stuck a century—or more—behind. Personally, I wonder if we should be happy about it or despair. How can women find this acceptable? (I’m not talking about you.) The weight of traditions isn’t just heavy there—it’s fierce and terrifying beneath the pretty picture you paint so well. This isn’t just "traditions" anymore; it’s total obscurantism. It's a temple carved between two cliffs with two pools where pilgrims come to bathe and overrun by monkeys that sometimes also plunder according to the images I had seen.

Indeed, there are several magnificent monuments... but completely abandoned, mess everywhere, fences with barbed wire, and a first pool with filthy water and littered with trash 😷.

Oh no! That’s one of my best memories of Rajasthan! Do you want photos of what *I* saw? Lived, I should say...

Do I usually say what I don’t think? Different perspectives aren’t necessarily incompatible. I love lively travel journals and thoughts that make me laugh. We just have different writing styles, and you like to blur the line between dream and reality, which isn’t my thing. That’s where our difference ends.

I’m talking about everything you describe of a Rajasthan you’ve just visited. I’ve wanted to return to Rajasthan for years—I loved it for all the reasons you mention and show. But every year I end up backing out because of what I know lies behind that magnificent tourist facade. When I was 20, I loved bullfights in Spain. Now, I’d campaign against them if I lived there.
