Bonjour,

Manado and
General Santos are both urbanized cities, but why they do not have good connection?
For one,
Batam and
Singapore are relatively close. Multiple ferry options are available between the two islands precisely because of that distance. Not so the case with
General Santos and
Manado, or even
Davao and
Manado, which are the two cities on both sides of the fence that have had relatively continuous traffic flows.
On the other hand, there's also market demand. Trade between
Mindanao and Sulawesi isn't that big, which doesn't justify cross-border traffic flows. This may change though as Indonesia and the
Philippines develop and become more prosperous.
Fun fact: 1996 was the year
General Santos opened its international airport, and the first international flights were to
Manado on Philippine Airlines. The route ended after a month due to poor market demand.
