Sao Tomé, the forgotten island

Hey there, it's me again—back with my usual travel journal share for our loved ones, from our 15-day trip in October 2019.

"Ah, here it is at last—that sweet scent of elsewhere so dear to Cricri and Lulu’s noses, that mix of apprehension and desire when facing the unknown.

We’re really diving into the unknown this time, taking you to the island of SAO TOMÉ... also known as the island: *‘Wait, what did you say?’* 😄. Because apparently, no one’s heard of Sao Tomé—except our Portuguese friends.

It’s an archipelago of three islands smack in the middle of the world, right on the equator, off the coast of Gabon.

No, these aren’t the sun-soaked, Polynesian lagoon islands. Here, *‘it rains, it pours...’* pretty much all the time, it seems.

There’s not much to *‘see’* in the traditional tourist sense—EXCEPT for stunning landscapes, lush vegetation, a few beaches with golden or black sand, colonial buildings still in their original state, a single main road, and plenty of *‘tracks’* that are more or less drivable. All this surrounded by an African population that speaks Portuguese and is known for its warm welcome.

Well, that should be enough for our happiness—and hopefully yours too! 😊

Ready for landing?

Hi Christelle,

I still have a few memories of this destination from an old travel journal: lush vegetation, not much to see (you mentioned that too 😉) and a tough road network for a sedan. All that had ultimately made me drop the idea of going there, but of course, I’m joining you for your travel journal! Maybe you’ll change my mind, and if not, I’ll have still taken a great virtual trip anyway 😎.

Hi Christelle. I’m sure I saw a brief write-up from you about this cocoa island somewhere… but where? Anyway, there were a few photos, including one of you next to a giant globe or world map (on the equator?). The lush vegetation and the sea… did I dream it?

Well, it did land, but... It’s an island where it rains so much that the plane skidded off the runway and got stuck in the mud! A crane is coming to pull it out of the muck. Of course, there’s no signal on the island.

Yeah, but during Christelle’s trip, no luck: a total blackout after the cyclone that had just hit the island ("impacted" would be the exact term), which caused the plane to skid off the runway due to torrential rains... Hope Christelle isn’t hurt...

"At what point in life do you think: Hey, let's go on a trip to São Tomé?"

Great question, Bruno... one I hadn't asked myself either 😄. All it takes is two ingredients, really: a tropical island (which we have a soft spot for) that’s also off the tourist industry’s radar—that’s the jackpot for us! And even if it comes with a few downsides you’ll discover, no regrets at all. If you know of other under-the-radar tropical islands, I’m all ears (Rodrigues is also amazing in its own way 😉).

No no, don’t slip away already Joel, we’re heading there! 😄 Here are our first impressions, starting with a somewhat unusual arrival!!

After 24 hours of travel (including an overnight in Lisbon), we were thrilled to breathe in our first tropical air. But we hadn’t counted on the island’s much-touted "early-rise" vibe—we ended up waiting not 30 minutes, not even 90, but a full 1 hour and 50 minutes just to get our passports stamped!!

At this point, it’s not just chillness—it’s full-on sluggishness (yep, I still love making up new words 🤪).

The pace was set, and it only got confirmed when we went for dinner at a restaurant where we waited ages... except now that we’re here, we couldn’t care less about waiting around 😄.

We explored the capital the next morning at dawn, since the sun rises at 5:30 AM (and sets at 5:30 PM)! São Tomé belongs to those who wake up early.

By 8 AM, it was already as hot as a scorching midday in the Landes region, but luckily, the clouds rolled in quickly to cool things down.

At 9 AM, we headed to the "city center," which sits by a stunning bay (though the water’s pretty murky!!).

It’s Sunday, and there are about as many people around as in my tiny village in Chalosse on a Tuesday afternoon (for a city of 53,000, that’s more than surprising!).

We finally found some lively action around the *huge* market—the one with veggies, fish, and clothes.

Oh, the size of that fish! 😮

As usual in Africa, it’s colorful, we met some friendly people, and Lulu couldn’t resist testing the locals’ honesty by "forgetting" his bag at a café terrace where we’d stopped for a break!! He went back over half an hour later... and found his bag exactly where he’d left it!! Maybe Sunday mass had something to do with it? 😄

The atmosphere is super relaxed—hardly any buildings, just colonial houses everywhere, some more run-down than others (mostly more, but it’s got its charm).

Anyway, you’ve probably guessed—someone who’s not a fan of big cities like me has found their dream capital 😊.

Yeah, in Africa just like in Latin America, people go to mass on Sundays. But it's true that in West African markets, even on a Sunday, there are crowds! Here, that's not the case...

Well, today it’s time to leave the capital.

We take possession of our new friend Jimmy, a Suzuki.

Because here, when you want to rent a car, you’ve got a choice between 4x4 and 4x4—and you quickly see why. On the only main road, full of potholes, you’re lucky to hit 50 km/h. Everywhere else, you’re maxing out in second gear on dirt, mud, or rocks!!

To get used to Jimmy, we quickly take a dead-end side road to check out the scenery.

We pass through a village that’s nothing like the capital: wooden or corrugated-iron huts, bits and pieces everywhere, women doing laundry in the river or filling up water jugs,

and kids everywhere—including two playing soccer... without a ball (like air guitar, but for soccer!).

Well, Africa’s here, and unfortunately, so is the poverty.

Once settled in Morro Peixe, we set off on foot to explore the local beaches. We stumble upon a little gem—the deserted beach—and Lulu goes for a dip.

I keep exploring and find an even more beautiful beach a bit further on. Not a soul in sight at first glance, then one kid, two kids, nine kids who spot me from afar and come running. I greet them with my biggest smile and my three words of Portuguese! Before I know it, one takes my hand, then another, and suddenly I’ve got two little ones clinging to each arm!! Uh, how to describe how I felt in that moment: "happy but... what do I do now??"

Yep, that’s me under there 🤗

They check me out from head to toe, ask what’s in my pockets, and when they don’t find anything else, one asks for my glasses!! I tell them I’m going to meet my husband. They follow me, still glued to my side. When we reach Lulu, they eye where the bags are, try to see what’s inside, and ask for candy. Lulu manages to distract them during a downpour, sheltering under a tree, whistling songs, then taking a few photos that end in big laughs when they see themselves on the screen.

At goodbye time, I crack and hand out the candy I always keep in my pockets (against all my principles to avoid encouraging begging—but I couldn’t help it!).

We quickly realize the vibe is the same with most of the kids we meet in the area—they shout for "dolces" (candy) or "bolas" (balls) when we drive by or walk through their village (while the adults leave us alone and just return our greetings). We really don’t want them to think their future is about begging from the rare white people who pass through, but at the same time, how do you not give *something* when you’ve spent time with them?! But after a little head-scratching, we found the perfect solution (thanks to the cute soccer balls we’d seen in a shop in the capital 😅).

In Namibia, we used to give water since that’s what they needed most, or some fruit 😊. But in São Tomé, water’s definitely not an issue with all that lush vegetation!

We continue the drive to the end of this beautiful road

and stop at one of the famous cocoa plantations

—but not just any one, since this is Diogo Vaz, bought by a guy from Landes who opened a shop in Mont-de-Marsan.

It was absolutely amazing to discover the birthplace of this excellent chocolate 🤤

Time to return to the first love of this trip—I’m talking about the village of Morro Peixe.

A tiny little village where the locals look at you like you’re an alien on the first day, smile at you on the second, and invite you into their home by the third.

We met the lovely Vanilda

and then Olivia, who I’ll tell you more about later

Hey there, we're back!

It's already time to leave this lovely lady in Morro Peixe and head to the east coast (and since Lulu is just as much of a macho as you, Joel, he's the one driving 🤪).

Quick stop in the capital to fill up the tank.

At the station, it's packed, with a pickup full of cops nearby... armed to the teeth!!

"Uh, can we get some gas?" "Nope, there isn't any." "Oh, and where can we find some?" "Nowhere, there's none left in the whole country." "Aaaah, and when will there be some?" "No idea 😱"!!!

Well, well, well! Luckily, we still have enough gas to reach our next place, we'll see tomorrow!

The sun rises, we're ready: off for the great adventure LOL. Our host tells us that gas has arrived but we have to wait a bit because there's a fight at the pump (re😱). Of course, when we get there, nothing left.

Since we're far from everything and bikes don't exist here (they wouldn't survive long on the local roads), we decide to contact the rental company, which agrees to swap our car for one that runs on diesel, easier to find. We head back to the capital to pick up the new ride... with an empty tank!!

Back to the pump where, roughly, 80 motorbikes and 20 cars are waiting for gas (some are even sleeping there!!), but we're told yes, there is diesel. A 4x4 fills up right before us, and when it's our turn, I'll give you one guess... yep, there's none left 🤦. Stay zen, stay zen!! Finally, we miraculously found a street vendor who filled us up with bottles (lots of bottles!!).

Given the smoke we're emitting, we must be running on agricultural fuel oil, but it works 😂.

All this chaos lasted 6 days because the government hadn't paid its bills, or so we were told (though in the end, our president isn't so bad after all 🤣).

The next morning, fresh and ready for new adventures with our new car, we're about to take off... just before realizing we've got another flat tire (yep, that's twice already 😂).

But luckily, there's always a state-of-the-art garage to help us out 🤪.

Basically, this trip is full of problems, but there's always a solution!

More to come in pictures, northern part of the east coast.

Still in awe and with beautiful encounters that make all the hassles worth it 😉.

And yes, you'd better love summer camp vibes because there are kids everywhere! I felt like I was reliving my youth, back in my days as a camp counselor 😂

Oh yeah Max, Socotra is on my "to discover when the crazy people have left" list!! It’s starting to get a bit long, though 🤪😄

In the meantime, we’re carrying on, and to take a break from all this São Toméan chaos, we’re heading south—right to the very end of the road, aka Porto Alegre. The last 15 kilometers are through mist, in the rain, and on a "road" so bumpy it really tests the driver, but the vegetation around us is just stunning 🌿.

And here we are, at the end of the island... only to find that Porto Alegre looks more like a medieval slum than a tropical paradise!!

As usual, we don’t care because one of the reasons we’re here is just a little further, right in front of us: Rolas Island, which they call here "the island at the middle of the world" 🌍.

It’s actually one of the few places on the planet where you can have one foot in the northern hemisphere and the other in the southern one, since the equator runs right through here.

And now you know the story behind my avatar 😜

Bruno’s the one who’ll be showing us around for the day: a good-looking joker, boat captain, tour guide, beer drinker, and red wine lover—basically a jack-of-all-trades 😄 (and everything we love).

He’ll introduce us to this island, which also has the two extremes of the social ladder, you could say: on one side, a luxury hotel, the Pestana, at 250 € a night, and right nearby, a very African village with chickens, goats, and pigs. I’ll let you guess where we spent the day!

To be honest, we were lucky the weather was crap

because otherwise, we would’ve stayed there with *graaaaand* pleasure, right in the middle of the world!!

It's true that when traveling, we rarely get the chance to find ourselves in this situation, but there are many such places on Earth—and I’m talking about the most accessible ones, of course... For my part, I’ve experienced this in Brazil, in Macapá, but you can find the same thing in Ecuador, Peru, Gabon, Congo, Kenya, Indonesia, etc..
