HOOVER DAM - NEVADA & ARIZONA

Hoover Dam is located in Black Canyon on the Colorado River, near Boulder City, on the border between Arizona and Nevada. It was built between 1931 and 1936 and was inaugurated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Thousands of workers labored on the dam's construction under extremely difficult conditions, which unfortunately resulted in the deaths of 112 of them.

Filling Hoover Dam created Lake Mead, which stretches 185 km upstream and is one of the largest artificial lakes in the world.

The dam is used for flood and sediment control, hydroelectric power, agricultural irrigation, and domestic water supply for Nevada, Arizona, and California.

Hoover Dam has become a major tourist site and welcomes nearly a million visitors each year.

NELSON GHOST TOWN - SEARCHLIGHT - NEVADA

Nelson Ghost Town is, as the name suggests, a ghost town located in the state of Nevada. This remote and wild region once held treasures that few people had ever seen.

The Spanish were the first to discover gold mines here. The Techatticup Mine opened in 1861, and the news spread quickly.

However, shady characters, war deserters, prospectors, and others—all hoping to make a quick buck—flocked to the area, leading to conflicts. Nelson became a booming town but earned a reputation as a rowdy place.

The mine was depleted and closed in 1941.

In 1994, Tony and Bobbie Werly bought the town and turned it into a tourist attraction. The site is a mix of old buildings and piles of all kinds of objects and vehicles.

It has also become a popular filming location. Many music videos and movies have been shot here, including the most famous one, *3000 Miles to Graceland* with Kevin Costner and Kurt Russell.

The site is open for visits, weddings, and photo shoots.

HALL OF HORRORS TRAIL - JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK - CALIFORNIA

The Hall of Horrors is a slot canyon located in Joshua Tree National Park in California. Actually, it’s two slot canyons side by side, hidden in a large rock formation in the middle of the park.

The entrance to the slot canyons is about 600 meters from the start of the trail, which is a 1.1-kilometer loop.

The first slot canyon we visited is very narrow. A large boulder suspended in the air between the two walls of the canyon marks the entrance.

The second slot canyon is a bit trickier to reach because it’s about 4 feet deep due to a large boulder blocking the access.

However, once on the ground, it’s easy to walk around inside the canyon since the passage is much wider than the first one.

Since this canyon has no dead ends, we turned back and climbed the boulder to exit the canyon, then continued our hike to complete the loop, which brings us back to the parking lot.

CHOLLA CACTUS GARDEN TRAIL - JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK - CALIFORNIA

The Cholla Cactus Garden Trail is an easy 400-meter loop trail located in Joshua Tree National Park in California.

The Cholla Cactus Garden is situated in the Pinto Basin, a transition zone between the Colorado and Mojave deserts.

The cholla cacti, which are actually quite pretty, are concentrated here due to the conditions that favor their growth and reproduction.

They primarily reproduce when detached stems take root in the soil to grow a new plant. These separated stems are often too heavy to be carried by the wind, which is why the colony thrives in this area.

It’s recommended to walk carefully around these cacti because segments can break off and attach to people and animals with their sharp spines.

It’s also advised to wear closed-toe shoes while walking this trail to protect your feet.

The Middle Group is actually the best-developed and most easily accessible area. A 1-mile trail winds around this zone, letting you discover these truly unique rock formations.

Here’s the translation of an informational sign at the site entrance explaining how these pinnacles formed:

"Rising from the floor of what was once an ancient lake bed, the Trona Pinnacles represent one of the most unique geological landscapes in the California desert. Over 500 of these tufa or calcium carbonate spires are spread across 14 square miles in the Searles Lake basin. Their sizes range from small coral-like rocks to several that tower over 140 feet high.

The pinnacles formed between 10,000 and 100,000 years ago, when Searles Lake was part of a chain of interconnected lakes flowing from Owens Valley to Death Valley. At one point during the Pleistocene, this area was under 640 feet of water.

The Trona Pinnacles were designated a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1968 to preserve one of the most remarkable examples of tufa spire formation in North America."

This canyon has a rich cinematic history, especially in old Western films.

Hiking this trail lets you explore colorful cliffs, gorges, and spectacular side canyons. Some rock formations even have names because they resemble objects or animals.

35.36433, -117.98407 Junction with Bench Overlook 35.36349, -117.98389 A bench sits at the top of a pleasant viewpoint surrounded by Yucca plants 35.36242, -117.98466 Junction with Window Rock (to the left)

The loop portion of the trail starts at this junction. It’s also the best spot to locate Window Rock to the west.

You’ll come to a junction marked by a few cairns. Follow these cairns and head straight toward the cliffs.

With a little searching, you’ll spot two rock formations: Window Rock (a hole/arch) and Camel Rock (a camel).

The last section of the trail is lined with beautiful Joshua trees and Yuccas.

In short, this loop hike gives you a lovely overview of the area.

VIEW OF THE TEHACHAPI LOOP – MONOLITH - CALIFORNIA

The Tehachapi Loop is located in Monolith, California. It’s a must-see stop for train and railroad enthusiasts.

Designated a national monument, this spiral railroad was created to allow long, heavy freight trains to climb a mountain pass that was too steep for a conventional straight track.

Two viewpoints let you watch trains enter the spiral. The official viewpoint doesn’t offer the best view, though. However, about 150 meters from this viewpoint, there’s another one that provides a better panoramic view of the loop.

It’s accessible via a dirt road blocked by a chain since it’s on private property. But you can walk there because the landowners allow visitors to reach the top of the hill to see the trains entering the loop.

DUNCAN CERAMIC PRODUCTS (ILOVETOCREATE) - FRESNO - CALIFORNIA

Location: 36.77991, -119.69786

Duncan Enterprises, a long-standing Fresno company, has been acquired by a New York investment firm but will continue operating in Fresno.

The company, founded in 1946 as Duncan Ceramics, is rebranding as iLoveToCreate as part of this change.

Today, the company is best known for products like fabric paint, dye kits, glue, and other craft supplies. They’re sold in big-box stores like Walmart and Michaels under brands such as Tulip, Aleene’s, ColorShot, Scribbles, and Puffy.

Most of the company’s assets were purchased by Dyson-Kissner-Moran Corporation, a private investment firm based in Poughkeepsie, New York, according to Duncan’s CEO, Larry Hermansen.

"They bought the products, the brand, the website, and the team that comes with it," he said.

The Duncan family still runs the business and still owns the colorful Fresno headquarters on Shields Avenue. DKM signed a long-term lease for the property, an agreement that will also keep the 130 employees on board.

No one was laid off, he said.

"We’ll still be based in Fresno, and nothing fundamental about the company has really changed," Hermansen said. "I can’t stress enough how positive this is for the team."

Hermansen declined to disclose how much the company was sold for or share details on what prompted the sale.

However, Duncan’s president, Larry Duncan, is retiring, he noted.

"It’s time for him to move on, and there’s now a new owner in place who wants to make significant investments to grow the company," Hermansen said.

DKM is a holding company that tends to hold onto its businesses long-term, he said. It also owns Plaid, a major player in the craft paint industry, though Duncan and Plaid remain separate companies.

Duncan Ceramics started in a family garage and quickly grew into a large business specializing in ceramic glazes. That part of the business eventually declined, and the last segment was sold in 2020.

Instead, Duncan focused on growing its DIY and craft side worldwide.

BUDDHIST TEMPLE WAT DHAMMARARAM - STOCKTON - CALIFORNIA

37.92457, -121.22544 3732 E. Carpenter Rd

Located in a neighborhood in eastern Stockton, California, the Cambodian Buddhist temple Wat Dhammararam is a place of worship for both locals and visitors. Admission is free.

Nearly a hundred statues adorn the grounds, each a vibrant work of art with golden reflections and intricate details. An annual Cambodian New Year festival takes place here in April.

Cambodia, a country dominated by Theravada Buddhism, faced communist Khmer and Vietnamese soldiers who seized its lands during the Vietnam War in a brief but devastating conflict. Many farmlands, which could have been used for rice and other crops, were ravaged by bomb craters and landmines or abandoned when their owners fled the war.

With the influx of people seeking protection and food assistance from the city government, Phnom Penh's population surged to about 2 million in the final years of the war.

Some displaced individuals found a new home in Stockton after the war. They were able to start over, build new lives, and integrate into the dominant American culture while remaining true to their ancestral traditions.

The first group of Cambodian immigrants to settle in Stockton, organized in August 1982, raised funds and purchased a house and land at 3732 E. Carpenter Road to establish a Khmer Theravada Buddhist monastery.

The Wat Dhammararam Buddhist temple opened its doors in the early 1980s. A true refuge for the Southeast Asian community, particularly Cambodians, it brought comfort to those who had lost loved ones.

It is in this Buddhist temple that Buddhist teachings and rituals are passed down from generation to generation.

The University of the Pacific is a private university located in the city of Stockton, California. It’s the oldest university in the state.

This campus is made up of historic buildings surrounded by beautiful trees, including blooming apple trees during our visit, and lovely gardens.

We didn’t go inside any of the buildings. Instead, we took a little stroll around the campus to admire the old brick buildings and walk through its park, which is actually a very peaceful spot.
