Thanks Carmen, I just looked up what a Spyder-type probe is. Okay, we’ll need to take a closer look at that .

I noticed that from one screen to another, the brightness isn't the same. How do you calibrate your screen?

Oh, in my opinion, it's not a calibration issue but a screen quality one. At home, I have three screens—one just for photos, one for gaming, and one for watching videos. They range from high-end to budget, and the difference is glaring.

Your husband too 😏? We could start a club for unhappy husbands... Every time, I get an earful that the 5DIV is only worth the price of our winter getaway in the West, and that I should’ve made the right choice 🤪... No matter how much I explain it was for the kids, she’s stubborn—and on top of that, I don’t dare buy anything behind her back anymore... 😏 I’ll just change my screen then 😕

I’m like you, Isabelle—I can’t be bothered to edit my photos much (other than straightening the horizons). Since I was given Lightroom, I’ve been using it a bit... but it’s not really my thing . Muriel

Ben... I think my screen must be broken, and your dunes will regain their colors on their own without being in raw 😛!!

I think we misunderstood each other. I also see the colors as quite dull. Well, it depends on the photos... So it's not your screen that's the issue. Though, I can't know what you see on your screen...😉 Plus, we don’t know the lighting Isabelle had when taking the photos. Maybe the weather and time of day weren’t ideal.

On the other hand, you need a good screen to edit photos, otherwise you tend to overdo it. At work, I have a terrible screen. All my photos look very dull. So if I had to "develop" my RAWs on this screen, I’d probably add too much contrast or oversaturate them. Uh, I’m not sure if I’m being clear enough...

Nathalie and Régis have good photography knowledge and might be able to say more.
TI Ticapi Globetrotter ·
Ben... I think my screen must be messed up, and your dunes will regain their colors on their own without being in raw 😛!!

Actually, I realize you were saying that as a joke... I'm not very awake today.
MA Marati Globetrotter ·
I said that tongue-in-cheek, because I find the colors a bit dull both on my phone and on my PC screen. However, I’m seriously considering buying a quality monitor for editing Raw files in Lightroom. For now, I’ve been sticking with JPEGs, since LR still lets you tweak and fix flaws in JPEGs pretty well, but as you already pointed out, Raw gives you way more flexibility.

RO Rouquine38 Globetrotter ·
Ah! Ah! I knew it was a bit ambitious to do a travel journal after Olivier's (Tidju)... ☺️ But luckily, he’s not following this one or he’d fall over... 😂😂😂 Still, all the comments are enriching, and I realize we have a lot to learn. Thanks everyone

If you shoot in raw, the images will seem flat to you. Your camera’s JPEG will compress and apply processing to the image to make it less "flat," but you lose a ton in quality.

Anyway, you’re heading to your internship at MPS—no way you should take photos in JPEG and go full auto. Over there, you’ll learn to switch to aperture priority and play with ISO for shutter speed 😛

Buying a good camera with a good lens and shooting in JPEG is a total waste. FYI, dual recording slows down burst speed (which can be annoying).

For the screen, I recommend choosing from the Eizo brand. It’s expensive, but it’s great.

After that, you should move to Lightroom—not necessarily to do a lot of editing, but at least to remove chromatic aberration and vignetting (it’s automatic) and, most importantly, to catalog your photos. Over time, you’ll get into editing.

Anyway, I’ll leave you to your travel journal 🙂

I think you’re being a little too hard on yourself... To me, your travel journal is just as good as Olivier’s, which does have the unbeatable advantage of being written during the trip itself... Hats off! 😎 For the photos, I find some of Olivier’s completely oversaturated in the reds, and as others have already pointed out in his journal, it doesn’t do the places justice at all. ;)

I can’t wait to read the rest of your adventures! 😎

Hello,

We just got back a week ago from our 32-day trip to Namibia, and I just discovered your travel journal! Bravo and thank you for sharing—it’s great to keep the journey alive! I’ve been thinking about making one myself, but after seeing Olivier’s and yours today, I’m doubting how useful it’d be... I just wanted to add a quick note about the colors in the photos. The weather conditions in the south weren’t always great this year—late July to early August, we had a hazy sky during our 2 days at Bagatelle (not completely gray, but a slight haze that was enough to dull the colors). Then at NamibRand, not to mention Sesriem, where visibility was down to 3 meters because of the thick fog. At Koiimasis and Kanaan, though, the conditions were perfect. Especially at NamibRand, where we stayed for 2 full days—the difference between the two days was striking, and it really shows in our photos taken at the same times with the same settings. According to the regulars, these weather conditions aren’t typical for the southern winter near Windhoek, but the weather is unpredictable... So while the camera, editing, and screen matter, you also need the luck of good light at the moment you take the shot. Even in Namibia, during sunrise/sunset and the dry season, it’s unfortunately not guaranteed (which was a bit of a surprise for me, by the way—aside from Sesriem, where I knew sandstorms were possible, I naively thought after reading travel journals on the forum that big blue skies were a given...).

I’m looking forward to reading about your climb up Big Daddy! Best regards, Sybille

I totally get it...😉 I’d love to join him on his lion-hunting expeditions and take photos... It sounds incredibly rich in lions, leopards, cheetahs, and all sorts of wildlife 😎 And if we can also learn to take "chic" photos to show off to our VF friends.....😉
RO Rouquine38 Globetrotter ·
Hi Sybille, Wow! 32 days in Namibia—what a dream. You must’ve done a great loop. If you got back a week ago, we must’ve left at about the same time, right? On our end, we didn’t have any fog at Sesriem, but the sky was rarely very clear because of the dust that’s always in the air. Anyway, even if there are other travel journals, I always find it interesting to get another point of view or another take, since everything we write is so subjective. See you tomorrow for the Big Daddy ascent! 😉

Yes, so actually I took a closer look at the dates and we arrived at NamibRand on July 30th! So we were your (distant) neighbors at the Venus camp for one night! We were planning to do the drive that evening but ended up doing it the next day... otherwise we could have met! Funny! We also stayed at the same campsite in Sesriem on August 1st! We did Big Daddy on August 2nd (so the day after you), and the conditions were really bad... I’ll definitely post a review on the forum, even if it’s not a very detailed travel journal, once I’ve sorted through the photos... Can’t wait to read the rest of your adventures, have a great day! Thursday, August 1st: Sesriem

No need for an alarm clock because by 5 AM, our neighbors are already up and about. We’re a bit more efficient now—everything done by headlamp—and folding the tent is no longer a mystery to us. We leave 10 minutes after the gates open. Dawn is breaking, and it’s much less cold than yesterday in the Namibrand: 9 degrees!

An hour later, we arrive at the parking lot accessible to 4x4s. They can’t go any further and must take the shuttle for a cost of $170N per person, while 4x4s can tackle the soft sand.

The shuttles are already there, waiting. We’re alone, so we decide to take one since there’s no wait. Yeah, okay, we’re wimps… Fine, we *could* have walked those 6 kilometers—it’s flat, and the track is wide. But when we saw the shuttle waiting, the decision was made in a flash.

It’s 8:10 AM when we arrive at the parking lot, and we’re about to climb Big Daddy when my husband realizes he’s lost the car keys. We’re completely stressed out. We ask the next shuttle driver to check for us. He tells us to wait here—he thinks they fell out of his pocket from the vehicle’s vibrations.

We cross our fingers and wait… 20 minutes later, the shuttle that brought us unloads its passengers, and before we can even ask the driver, a woman steps out holding the keyring. Phew! What a relief! 🙂

Much more relaxed now, we grab our backpacks and set off to climb Big Daddy, which is over 300 meters high. No problem—we can’t get lost; we just follow the tracks. We walk along the dunes on the left.

Then the climb begins… When you take one step forward, you slide half a step back, so progress is *really* slow. The upside? We have plenty of time to admire the landscape unfolding before us. 😉

It takes us an hour and a half to reach the top. Wow, that’s quite a hike!

Well, looks like this is a popular meet-up spot!

But even if you’re not in great shape, taking it slow works. When you reach the top of the dune, the view makes it all worth it. It’s simply stunning—endless dunes as far as the eye can see. I’d have really regretted not making the climb.

We soak in the view for a while before running down into Dead Vlei. It reminds us of our descent into the volcanic ash of Pico Grande—magical. You can hear the sand singing, and we love it. Plus, it’s way less tiring than the climb! 😮

It’s 11 AM when we reach the Vlei. The walk is really pleasant, though the heat is starting to kick in. On the dune, there was wind, but down here, there’s not a breath of air.

We spend a good while admiring this iconic landscape.

RO Rouquine38 Globetrotter ·
After returning to the parking lot and grabbing a quick bite, we set off on foot toward Sossusvlei. It’s not far, but the heat is definitely there.

We didn’t stay long—the Vlei wasn’t very pretty. We settled for a few photos of Big Mama. However, if we’d known, we would’ve had lunch here since there are a few spots set up and no one around.

We took the shuttle back—we didn’t know it was an option on the way there since we hadn’t seen one. We still had time to return to Dead Vlei, which we reached well before 2 PM. The magic worked its charm again—it’s truly a stunning place. Plus, there was almost no one left, and the top of Big Daddy was nearly free of human presence.

For the return trip, we took the shuttle back to the 4x4 parking lot. At 3:30 PM, we left and covered the last 60 km to the camp. We were truly enchanted by our day.

We relaxed at the campsite until 5 PM and then headed toward SossusVlei Lodge. We had a meet-up—not for dinner but to take a scenic flight over the dunes. Tourmaline advised us to book a flight just before sunset, so our departure was at 5:40 PM for 40 minutes. We reserved a small Cessna just for the two of us—cool!

Well, when I saw that little plane that could only carry four people, I wasn’t exactly reassured, but as soon as it took off, I couldn’t take my eyes off the landscape below us.

It was an amazing moment—we flew over Sesriem Canyon and then followed the road leading to Sossusvlei.

We could spot Dune 45, which looks really small from up there.

The route continued to Dead Vlei, where we easily recognized Big Daddy towering over it.

Then, we turned around in front of Sossus Vlei—Big Mama looked even prettier from above.

"Voyager est un triple plaisir : l'attente, l'éblouissement et le souvenir." Ilka Chase
RO Rouquine38 Globetrotter ·
We then flew over an almost endless expanse of dunes—it’s really beautiful, especially with the sun setting.

At the end, we spotted Fairy Circles—it’s so strange, these bare circular patches surrounded by plants.

Fairy circles are small, mysterious circular areas without vegetation, generally round or hexagonal in shape, found in the natural dry grasslands of southwestern Southern Africa.

Then, before landing, Dune Elim.

Those 40 minutes felt incredibly short—we were so captivated by the landscapes unfolding below us.

We had an amazing day; these dunes and vleis truly fulfilled all our wishes. Tonight, we’re turning in early because the day’s fatigue and emotions have worn us out.

What an incredible experience! From the sky, the vleis and dunes are truly magnificent... what luck! I’d hesitated to do a hot-air balloon ride, but the prices were really out of our budget.

And the difference is just amazing: the next day at 8:30 AM on the climb up Big Daddy, it looked like this:

Yeah, it was actually nice weather at the Sesriem campsite at 6:00 AM—otherwise, we would’ve gone back to bed... 😉 The fog started about 30 km later... and since it was still dark, we didn’t go over 60 km/h, which is otherwise really hard to stick to! To be honest, at first, I didn’t plan on going at all 😮. But since the price was the same whether it was just me or for two (or even four, since we booked the whole plane), I decided last minute and I’m so glad I did—it was really safe 😎.
