On the other hand, I can't decide between Epupa Falls and Fish River Canyon. I also planned to go to Purros (Himba and desert elephants), but since we're spending two nights at Aussitch with Marius, I'm afraid it might be redundant. Any advice would be welcome. Chantal

I can't give advice for these destinations since we haven't been to any of them except Epupa Falls. And Epupa wasn't our best memory from this trip. Maybe others can help you out?

If the water isn’t at least 22°C, we don’t swim. The perk of living in the Var!

I live in the north, though, and I don’t swim if it’s below 25°C (and even then, only just!) 😏. Muriel

Well... I didn't really dare to reply because I'm struggling at 28°C, but at 30°C it's a bit better 😮. Actually, I only swim very, very rarely 😊.

At 25°C, it still takes me a good 10 minutes to get into the water... true, at 30°C it gets easier 😉. Muriel

Well, I'm like Isabelle—I need at least 28°C for swimming, but that wasn’t an issue for kayaking since, in theory, you don’t get wet (they provide all the "fisherman" gear to stay dry). Though I say *in theory*, because two sea lions climbed onto my husband’s kayak at the same time, which still led to a pretty significant water leak in the boat...

Otherwise, for my daughter (8 years old), it’s one of the biggest highlights of the vacation... because four sea lions followed her for over 30 minutes, taking turns swimming under the kayak to get their bellies rubbed. It was such an amazing interaction with the animals!

What bothers me in this case isn't the showers—it's more the toilets (or sometimes the lack of toilets 😕).

Given the state of some toilets around the world, a patch of sand or dirt is basically paradise.😏

(Personally, it's the shower I miss the most. 😊)
AT Atila Globetrotter ·
I only booked the Sandwich Harbour day trip. The extra hours allow for more stops and a decent break, which lets you climb up to see the dunes or take a dip (or both)—something I would’ve loved to do despite the water being at 18°C since the air was over 40°C...🤪

We were thrilled to see 12 elephants out of the 25 living in the valley.

Ugh!

Where did they all hide when I was there???😕

To not keep Attila waiting any longer, who’s dreaming of seeing the desert elephants, here’s the next part...

Wednesday, August 7: White Lady / Grootberg Lodge

Last night, we were a bit warm in our sleeping bags, and this morning, the temperature is still a little chilly but not cold. We’re enjoying a nice breakfast at a leisurely pace—today, our destination is Grootberg Lodge. We’re almost done when my husband gives me a pointed look with big eyes. He signals for me to get up because an elephant is approaching behind me.

Luckily, it stops at the trash can under the tree, giving us time to leave the table and calmly head to the car. It rummages through the trash, finds the orange peels, and tosses the bag aside.

After eating the oranges, it heads toward the table but doesn’t go for the food in the bag. Then it comes toward the car and moves to the back, which we’d left open. Worried it might flip the trunk searching for the orange net, I open the door and slam it shut—startling it and making it leave.

Well! We wanted to see desert elephants, and we got our fill at Brandberg!! So! Watch out for elephants—we warned you 😛.

We hit the road again here

Hi Guillaume, In theory, the day trip should definitely let you reach the end, whereas with the other option it depends on the tide. In reality, it was the opposite for us—when we did the full-day trip, our guide pretended to just realize the tide was high... so we had to turn back, which really annoyed us. Jacques
MA Max68 Globetrotter ·
Hi Sybille,

I think it’s a question of tide times. If it’s low in the morning, maybe you won’t be able to get there or back

- That’s exactly it—the tide times will determine whether you can reach the site via the beach or not. Back then, we checked them before booking our tour. 😉

Personally, what bothers me way more about the water issue is all those lodges with huge swimming pools. When you know how much water is lost daily through evaporation—never mind the draining—I think it’s outrageous they’re still allowed!!

Luckily, there are very few of those in Namibia.

Otherwise, let’s just do what we can at our own level... it’s the story of small streams making big rivers 😉

And Epupa wasn’t our best memory from this trip.

Hi Isabelle, For us, it was truly a region we really enjoyed. Shows how opinions can differ! 🙂 We stayed 4 nights (Epupa Falls and Cunene River Lodge), and that explosion of green and water really charmed us—it made for a great transition from the aridity and dust we’d encountered earlier. But we didn’t go to FRC, and it’s also a place we’d love to visit on a future trip. 😎

Hello Jean Luc, True, it’s the only place with water, and it’s such a relief! 😊 Looking back, I think we didn’t stay long enough to really appreciate it. We probably should’ve skipped it and spent more time elsewhere instead. 😅 By the way, it’d be super helpful to know what you did during those 4 days… for next time! 😉

Oh no, not alone! For safety reasons (a sea lion climbing into the kayak... or the currents), she was in a tandem kayak. That way, she could fully enjoy the interaction with the animals while the adult (me, in this case) tried not to end up on the beach in the middle of the colony...

Hi Régis, Right now there’s a traffic jam of Namibia travel journals... ;) I’m waiting for things to thin out a bit before I get started... :) At the same time, it gives me a little more time to pick out the photos ;)

Plus, some troublemakers are dumping tons of photos on VF ;) (wildlife and landscapes) that I drool over for hours... Doesn’t help me move forward much... :/

After all, it wasn’t so bad going in winter despite the slightly chilly nights 😄😄😄

We’ve never been to these regions at other times of the year, but winter is clearly the ideal season for us: blue skies, sunshine, pleasant temperatures (25/30°C) without being unbearable, and cool nights (a bit too much sometimes ;)) that make for restful sleep... If you also get elephants at every turn in the trails.... :) We’d happily spend all our summer vacations (for Europeans) in the southern hemisphere 😎 Okay, swimming is a bit limited :/
SI Simc4 Veteran ·
Otherwise, let's already do what we can at our level... it's the story of streams forming rivers 😉

Totally agree with you, Max. In some lodges, they’d leave us buckets to collect the cold water running from the shower before it got hot.... A small gesture, but if you stay 30 minutes under the shower....... 🤪😕 Anyway, even at home, we’ll have to (need to) watch our water consumption. After checking some informative sites, we saw that Belgium was even worse off than Namibia in terms of water reserves...... Surprising, but it’s also linked to population density and individual overconsumption...
RJ Rjulie95 Globetrotter ·
And to the absurdities of our governments that don’t make decisions—take France, for example:

When building a house, it’s still not mandatory to install water collection tanks Same goes for incentives to set up systems for reusing shower water and other sources to flush toilets

Okay, we’re getting a little off-topic here 🤪

At first, we were kinda playing it cool like "Isa" 😛😏! Being a bit chilly, not really keen on splashing around in 12°C water, "just" to see sea lions. If the water’s not at least 22°C, we don’t swim. The perk of living in the Var! I showed the family some photos of the activity, but not many were up for it—maybe they were wrong....

Yes, you were wrong—it was the best paid excursion of our trip. To fight the cold, you get really warm and waterproof wetsuits. At least that’s how it was for us with Eco Marine Kayak Tours. It’s absolutely amazing to play with the sea lions, be at their level, and see every little movement they make in the water. Plus, we got several photos and videos of ourselves taken by Eco Marine Kayak Tours.

Camping, okay, but without water or sanitary facilities, it won't be for this time around,

Uhhh... There are nice hot showers at Spitzkoppe too.

You just need to drive there since they're communal and it's not a small campsite.

For toilets, they're closer with dry toilets scattered all over the place. Not great in terms of smell, I admit...

I confirm, there are showers at the campsite entrance. We didn't use them—a night without a shower is easily doable.

For toilets, there's one per pitch. I didn't find them smelly, but in winter, it's probably less of an issue than in spring or autumn. Our pitch and the toilets were really clean. Nothing like the toilets in Ladakh.[;]
