"Without stopping for sightseeing, the trip between
Nashville and
Memphis is about 3 1/2 hours and is an easy drive on Interstate 40. The Peabody is an excellent hotel for charm and location as it is an easy walk to Beale Street & Peabody Place; just a few blocks from the river and the parks on the river. If they're coming to
Memphis before about October, the motorcycle exhibit that was at
the Guggenheim is at the Pyramid. If they're real walkers, they can walk to a couple of blocks to the trolley and then walk a couple of blocks from the trolley to the Pyramid. Graceland is NOT walking distance and they wouldn't want to walk in that neighborhood, anyway. But it is absolutely a MUST SEE. They have headsets and self-guided tours of the house, the grounds, the plane, etc. If The Peabody isn't available, also
downtown there is The
Madison (small & chic). (The Peabody is the grand old lady
downtown and has several restaurants including the award winning, and formal, Chez Phillipe.) The
Madison has a wonderful small bar/dining room that is casual. The
Madison would be a short walk to the trolley and they could ride that for the mile and a half it is to Beale Street. There are some wonderful art galleries and funky shops in the South Main Historic District which would be a trolley ride from either the Peabody or the
Madison.
Memphis looks nothing like
Nashville.
Nashville has rolling hills and
Kentucky bluegrass.
Memphis is flat - was built on a bluff.
If they like
Memphis music, they can hear plenty of that on Beale Street. If they are interested in
Memphis music from a historical viewpoint, they can visit the Stax Museum. (It's a taxi ride from
downtown, but an interesting place. My company recently had a party there and we liked going through the museum before dinner. It is only a museum - they don't serve food/drinks there.) Also, of course, Sun Studios - Elvis' first recordings were done there, is also a museum. It's near
downtown but only a walk for real walkers. Also, I believe the trolley goes near there - maybe a
block or 2 away.
Encourage your people to come to
Memphis because they'll like what they see. But if they're coming during the Summer, be prepared for heat and more heat and humidity and more humidity!"
