Thailand reports first H1N1 fatalities
BANGKOK, June 27 (TNA) --
Thailand’s first two Influenza A (H1N1) fatalities have been reported, while the cumulative number of patients of the disease in the country has risen to 1, 209, Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai announced on Saturday.
Mr. Witthaya told a press conference that a 40-year-old woman died on June 20 at a private hospital but the ministry has only now been informed of her death.
Relatives of the female patient had apparently requested the hospital to delay informing the ministry of her death as they did not want to see the story appear in the press, he said.
The second patient was a 42-year-old man who died at a hospital in Si Racha district of Chon Buri, near
Bangkok, at about 9am Saturday morning. He had returned from overseas recently and was admitted into the hospital on June 23, said Mr. Witthaya.
From April until Saturday (June 27), the cumulative toll of patients of H1N1 patients stood at 1, 209, of which 1, 191 persons have been fully cured, he said. Sixteen patients remain hospitalised.
In an attempt to curb the spread of the new flu, the Public Health Ministry on Monday will add 20 more telephone information lines to provide advice on how the public can prevent contracting the disease. The service runs round-the-clock. (TNA)
