Tips for a 9-night itinerary in Dalmatia

Hi there, we're heading to southern Croatia for nine nights in early September. We land in Dubrovnik and fly out from Split. I’ve already read a lot of discussions on this forum, and I’ll admit I’m a bit overwhelmed... I’d love your advice, because I’m not sure if we should visit the islands of Korčula, Hvar, or Brač (with all the ferry hassles, potential delays, or boarding issues), since we’ve rented a car. Or is the coast so beautiful that there’s already plenty to see without rushing around, and we know we can’t do it all anyway?

At the start of the trip, we’ve planned one night to see the Bay of Kotor, then maybe one night back in Dubrovnik, and after that, we’re unsure.

What do you recommend?

If we stick to the mainland, maybe we could go as far as Krka National Park.

Thanks, and have a great day!

You’ll definitely need at least 1 night in Dubrovnik, maybe 2. Depending on your arrival time at the airport, you might even head straight to Montenegro for the first night—the airport is quite far south of Dubrovnik.

As for the islands, I think you should visit at least one. The vibe is totally different from the mainland coast, and the landscapes and towns are really unique. No need to do several, but you could, say, spend 2 nights in Korčula or Hvar. The ferry from Orebić to Korčula runs every hour, so no stress in September. For Drvenik-Sućuraj (Hvar Island), it’s about 90-120 minutes between crossings.

What interests you most? Small ports, historic sites, mountains, hiking, beaches, etc.? How many of you are there? You didn’t mention Mostar—is that less of a priority?

If you’re pushing on to Krka beyond Split, I’d recommend planning for 2 nights to cover Trogir, Šibenik, Krka, and maybe even Primošten or Rogoznica.

Hello, thank you for your reply. We’re indeed arriving in the morning and will head straight to the Bay of Kotor. I’ll follow your advice and book one or even two nights in Dubrovnik afterward. We really love ports, old stones, and small villages—quiet spots.

We enjoy visiting places but don’t necessarily like spending the whole day at the beach. A quick swim at the end of the day can be nice, though. There are two of us, adults in our 40s, no kids. I haven’t looked into Mostar yet; I’ve been focusing mostly on Croatia.

I’ve read that Hvar Island is very touristy, like Saint-Tropez. Maybe Korčula would be a better choice? Which of the two is prettier?

Thanks, and have a great day!

Don’t confuse the island of Hvar with the town of Hvar. The nightlife/luxury reputation comes from the town (which is still beautiful), but the rest of the island is quieter. All the most beautiful spots are touristy, but generally, there are fewer people on the islands (and, I assume, fewer people in September). Korčula and Hvar are similar—both are beautiful Croatian islands. But personally, we really loved Korčula.

In both cases, you can arrive by ferry and leave directly for Split with another ferry, but you’ll miss the Makarska Riviera and Omiš (and the Neretva Delta if coming from Korčula), which are still impressive. The town of Hvar is a 90-minute ferry ride away, so it’s a long trip back the same way, whereas Korčula is right next to the ferry to Orebić, which is only 45 minutes from the Pelješac Bridge.
