Hi Fabienne! I thought your idea for a collaborative travel journal was interesting, and I was planning to dive into it once I had a bit more time! What a mistake—tonight I decided to read it, and there are already 30 pages! What a hit😎! Oh dear, catching up is going to be tough😉... I'm starting right away

We just got back from 2 months in the USA (3 days ago). Here’s a brand-new photo of Bryce Canyon... This trip was magical despite the exceptional weather we had on Route 66. It hadn’t snowed that much since 1915—it was enchanting, but we got stuck for 3 nights in Williams, and our kids missed their flight back to France 😅😅. I think they caught the "Travel to the US" bug. Here are a few more photos from this extraordinary journey: http://www.patetnat-envoyage.com/de-death-valley-a-bryce-canion-en-hiver/ And here’s a photo of the stripes at Nautilus Canyon...

Welcome to the newest arrivals! And, if I can take credit for starting this travel journal, thank you to all its contributors! I especially love these last two photos by Nominanda and Fay2. TDM, you guessed that I might be a contemplative person too. I don’t necessarily need to act to just *be*. Watching and seeing things (and trying to see through them) is a source of pleasure for me. That doesn’t mean I stare at things for hours because time stands still and a blink can feel like an eternity...

It’s also about paying attention to the tiniest things and details that others might miss because their steps have already carried them elsewhere, and their focus is on their next action. In fact, when I’m out walking, I trip regularly because I’m looking at a plant, an insect, or a cloud... or in the city, a window or the bright gaze of a person... I have to force myself to concentrate on what I’m doing rather than what’s around me! It makes my husband laugh—he’s always telling me to "watch out"...

To illustrate this, here’s a "tiny, insignificant thing" you see a lot in the most arid parts of the American West. A wonder of nature when you look at it up close...

What a really great idea. Will I go back one day? I don’t know, but the desire is still tucked away inside me. One of my most beautiful memories: Mesa Verde NP. The memory of the ranger who kept telling us that if we were claustrophobic or afraid of heights, we shouldn’t go with him, the memory of that other ranger, Native American, who spoke so well about those villages.

What a fantastic idea. Will I ever go back? I don’t know, but the desire is still tucked away deep inside me.

Actually, I already knew I had to return to the West for Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana... Now, with this journal, I realize I need to explore COLORADO too.

One of my best memories: Mesa Verde NP. The memory of the ranger who kept telling us that if we were claustrophobic or afraid of heights, we shouldn’t go with him. And the memory of that other ranger, a Native American, who spoke so beautifully about those villages.

It reminds me of the morning I spent with Leslie, a Navajo guide, in a somewhat secluded valley near Monument Valley—Mystery Valley, to be exact. It’s not accessible for independent visits. You’ll see a number of rock formations and arches, but also Anasazi ruins and petroglyphs. For us, it was amazing to chat with Leslie, who shared so many childhood and youth memories (he was nearly 70) of exploring these valleys far and wide. Most importantly, we could ask him all the questions we had about the Navajo Nation, and he answered them so kindly. And it also let me discover the Anasazi, who, I’ll admit, I’d never heard of before.

Those crêpe-like rock formations are so beautiful—and so unexpected!

The West is magical because so often you find yourself immersed in the world of movies or books you’ve devoured (often as a kid), but this time with the physical experience and all five senses alive: - At Monument Valley, it’s like stepping back into classic Westerns - In Canyonlands, you feel like you’re on Mars or another planet, half-expecting a shiny flying saucer to take off or an unfriendly alien to appear... And you could go on forever with most of the rural and urban landscapes you encounter! That’s why it’s such a rejuvenating experience. Last summer, I was in the western part of the continent—much farther north, in the Canadian Rockies and British Columbia—and there, the Saskatchewan River takes you right back to trapper stories...

Anyway, I’d love to start a new series: one movie, show, or book tied to the mythology of the West = one photo!

And I’ll kick it off below with *Zorro*, the old series that definitely shaped my childhood... So here’s the scene: Zorro is once again being chased by two villains. He’s riding Tornado through rugged terrain, weaving at full speed between rocks and bushes. He hides just past the bend, climbing onto a large rock... and just as the bad guys pass by, he leaps down, knocking them off their horses. He fights one while Tornado scares the other away...

And this is where it happens:

You can almost picture it, right?

Well, here we have three outlaws who just robbed a bank and are fleeing into the desert to escape the law... sandstorm, they lose their horses and arrive exhausted at a waterhole, where they find a woman giving birth. She dies right after the baby is born, but not before making the bandits promise to protect her child—so they become the godfathers. They’ll sacrifice everything to cross the desert and save the baby, and only one of them will make it to the village. In the end, they’ve redeemed themselves... It’s a John Ford film set in Death Valley, called *Le Fils du Désert* in French and *The Three Godfathers* in English.

Then head into the adjoining "Timber Creek" shop, where you’ll find some great stuff—art, clothes, hats, jewelry, and more. Both spots are definitely worth a visit. The movie was filmed in 1968 in and around Ridgway and Ouray❤️❤️.

Do you recognize this desert? Yes, it's Death Valley, the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes... Add two silhouettes to it... a tall, lanky one and a short, chubby one. No, it's not Laurel and Hardy... 🤪 And what if I told you they're made of metal? Got it? Yes, that's right—this little patch of desert was used as a set in the first installment of the saga (and in *Return of the Jedi* too).

Good evening Fabienne,

During our last trip, we visited filming locations from Alfred Hitchcock’s *Vertigo*. The French title is *Sueurs froides* (*Cold Sweat*).

We went to the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. In that scene, Scottie follows Madeleine to the edge of the sea, near Fort Point, where she jumps into the water. He dives in to save her. www.lieu-geographique.com/...e-jette-a-l-eau.html

The second *Vertigo* filming location we planned was the Palace of the Legion of Honor. In the film, Madeleine goes there to admire a painting. www.lieu-geographique.com/...e-dans-un-musee.html

Next, we headed to another *Vertigo* location: Mission San Juan Bautista (www.lieu-geographique.com/...lfred-hitchcock.html), where the dramatic climax of the story takes place.

We recognized the Mission, but not the bell tower. The original tower and steeple were destroyed by fire, so Alfred Hitchcock recreated it in a studio using paintings and models. The current tower is shorter.

We arrived too late to visit the Mission. We only had time to snap a few photos, but the light was fading.

Here’s one:

Good night!

What's worth noting is that the river flowing there is the Colorado, not the Rio Grande, but John Ford got us used to this kind of choice because the scenery is stunning. Just next door, at the hotel, the *Red Cliffs Lodge*, we visited a small but interesting museum displaying photos of films shot in the area, including *Back to the Future* (I can't remember if it's the first or second one).

Not just for films: an exceptional book = Martin Eden, by Jack London.

Of course, today's San Francisco has nothing in common with the San Francisco of Martin Eden's childhood and youth described in this book... The 1906 earthquake and the fires that followed destroyed 80% of the city and indirectly led to the development of Los Angeles, where many activities relocated...

So, to pay tribute to Jack London and his fictional double Martin Eden—both adventurers, sailors, and writers—I choose this beautiful and grand three-masted ship, the Balclutha, which you can visit at the maritime museum near Fisherman's Wharf. It was built in 1886 (little Jack was 10 years old) and, given its activity (transporting goods between Europe and U.S. Pacific ports), it’s likely that the boy, teenager, or young man saw its silhouette crossing the Golden Gate (and at that time, the strait wasn’t yet spanned by a bridge)...
