Croatia, Montenegro – two victims of overtourism?

The setting sun gilds the stone, a diver wonders if his jump will be worth it, boats compete to see which will be the loudest...

We’re dining on a terrace with some local specialties that feel a bit too heavy in this heat.

Night falls, and the streetlights beautifully highlight mosques and buildings.

We make a few purchases, then go pack our suitcases.

Tomorrow, we head back toward France.

We’re leaving Bosnia-Herzegovina the same way we entered—through a secondary border crossing.

The Croatian customs officer asks if we have anything to declare.

Three bottles of wine?

Alright, you’re good to go!

And just like that, we’re back in the Schengen Zone.

A quick stop at Red Lake, a few views of the green waters of Lake Riice, and it’s time to head toward busier roads.

We’re now crossing Croatia via the highway, though we’ll leave it near Ogulin to finish our journey through the greenery and mountains.

The hotel we booked is in sight, and we take advantage of the relatively mild temperatures to stretch our legs.

The village doesn’t have much to offer, but that doesn’t matter for a one-night stop.

One last Croatian dinner, one last night in the Balkans...

See you tomorrow in Italy! !

Goodbye Croatia, goodbye Slovenia, hello Italian motorways.

Traffic is lighter than on the way out, but it’s still a car parade for some...

Feeling a bit peckish?

How about stopping in Vicenza?

The city is dominated by the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Monte Berico, a perfect spot for a break off the motorway.

A café offers tempting paninis, and we can’t resist.

We admire the panoramic view of the city before getting back on the motorway.

Driver swap—two of us is exhausting with Italian-style driving!

We finally pass Milan, and our BnB isn’t far now.

The village of Boffalora Sopra Ticino has a lovely setting along the Naviglio Grande, one of the region’s canals.

Not a tourist in sight—we’re far from the overcrowded towns and villages we passed through on this trip.

Few locals around this season either, so dinner options are limited.

Yet my partner will eat the best carbonara of his life here—proving that appearances can be deceiving!

See you tomorrow in France for the wrap-up of this trip...

Fréjus Tunnel or not?

That is the question this morning.

No more desire to be cooped up under the mountain today than there was 3 weeks ago, so we took the Mont-Cenis Pass instead.

A few hours later, we’re home—this trip is over.

So, overtourism in the Balkans or not?

I was expecting the worst, but the worst rarely happened.

Sure, towns and villages have become commercial enterprises, but the crowds weren’t overwhelming. Maybe the June effect?

The coastline is still accessible and peaceful in many places, and the countryside and mountains aren’t exactly swamped.

If I were to do it again, I’d avoid Budva and its surroundings, as well as the Kravica waterfalls. Instead, I’d spend more time inland in Montenegro.

Not sure if this travel journal has inspired any Balkans trips, but my advice is: don’t wait too long for Montenegro.

Avoiding the summer season (July through September) is also a good idea if you’re hoping for a more relaxed trip...

See you soon in the Indian Ocean! !

How much was parking in Blagaj?

About 7 or 8 years ago when we went, it was 2 € for unlimited day parking. (In central Mostar, it was 10 €/day.)

Just checking how prices have changed. In Bosnia, we only spent a day in Mostar and a little time in Trebinje.

I’d love to go back—I really loved it and would definitely want to see more! !

I don’t know, I parked in a free parking lot 100 meters before the paid one (next to a mosque).

In Mostar, the car was parked in the guesthouse courtyard, so it was free too.

Thanks Agnès for this travel journal 🙂. I’d read very little about this destination and discovered a few spots that really tempt me... but there are also quite a few Italian regions I’m keen on (despite the locals’ driving 😉) and especially Greece (I’ve never been disappointed every time I’ve been there). Tough choices! 😏

Italy and Greece are way past their prime in terms of tourist development.

But it’s not too late for the interior of Montenegro and Albania yet...🙂

It’s too late for Italy and Greece in terms of tourism development.

I disagree 😉. In Greece, we always found spots with few (or even very few) people, even in July (on the mainland). Often, all it takes is stepping off the beaten path to find places almost devoid of tourists (I’m well aware that this can change quickly for some spots "thanks" to social media, but there will always be lesser-known ones).

I know Italy less well, but the interior of Sardinia last May-June reminded me of France in the 60s 😎: very few tourists and a very peaceful pastoral atmosphere. As for the beaches (northern half), they were still pretty quiet, except for a few highly Instagrammable spots like La Maddalena or La Pelosa Beach, where there were still some crowds (but my tolerance for human density is very low 😏). As for hikes, we didn’t run into many people there either 🙂.

AT Attila Globetrotter ·
In my mind, I was comparing Durmitor to the Dolomites, for example.😉

The top 10 spots in Montenegro and Albania are still largely under-exploited (outside the coastal resorts).

For Sardinia, I went a few years ago. Too late for the beaches and the top 10 spots, even though it was actually nice inland. Then I left in September, and Italians were still on vacation!😕 The worst was Neptune’s Grotto...

Greece was almost in the last century for me. Not too crowded inland in the north, actually (in the middle of summer). The Peloponnese and Crete—wow, that was like 40 years ago! Even back then, the "must-see" sites were already pretty busy.

I’ve crossed a few islands off my personal list. When I see the photos online, all I want to do is run away!🏴‍☠️ Maybe in winter?

The problem with off-season travel for some places is that everything can be closed, and getting there isn’t always easy at a reasonable price...

You’re right to go in the spring rather than September. I feel like there are way fewer people then.

Makes sense—water temperatures are still decent in September, while in the pre-season, it can be like a fridge...

It’s true that Neptune’s Grotto was really crowded (but we hadn’t booked and still managed to get in without waiting). I also get the feeling there are fewer people in May-June than in September. For anyone who wants to swim, sure, the water’s a bit chilly, but the days are noticeably longer, and the vegetation and flowers are way prettier. After that, it’s all about personal preference 😉

TI Ticapi Globetrotter ·
I think generally there are fewer people in spring. We were in Croatia in April 2023 and it was really quiet. Same in 2024 in Denmark and in 2022 in the Netherlands, except at Keukenhof. Italy – Cinque Terre, Pisa, Siena, etc. – was perfect in autumn 2020, but now it must be a nightmare.

The Dolomites, I’d love to go, but I hate walking in a long line in the mountains.

Peru in April and early May was also perfect.
TI Ticapi Globetrotter ·
Sardinia is calling my name for spring. Maybe in 2027.😊

We’ll be traveling by van, so I need to check if the island has some great spots.
MU Muriel18 Globetrotter ·
I can't really give you any info on that... we traveled between two places in a Fiat 500 😏

I’d love to go to the Dolomites, but I hate walking in single file in the mountains.

I didn’t walk in single file (except to one lake), but it wasn’t peak season and it was right after Covid...

It’s best to avoid spring because of the snow.

I’m butting into your calendar digressions to thank you for this travel journal. In the end, it seems more fear than harm when it comes to crowds. It let me (re)discover some well-known spots and explore Montenegro, which I’d only ever seen through the Bay of Kotor. It almost made me want to go back—but I’d definitely pay close attention to the timing this time… almost. 😉

It seems wild camping is banned in Croatia just like in Montenegro.

I didn’t pay much attention, but I think there were some old-school campgrounds in Montenegro. Like locals renting out their land to campers.

You’d need a small van to get everywhere and really get away from the super touristy spots at night so you don’t end up packed in like a parking lot.

In Croatia, wild camping is prohibited. In April, the campsites were almost empty, so we could choose our spot. If you buy the ACSI book, you become a member and get discounts at quite a few campsites. We paid between 18 and 23 euros per night for two people, the dog, and the van. In a completely remote area, you can try wild camping. We did it three times.

Thanks for sharing this—it’s pulled me out of my silent-reader mode! I visited Korčula back in 1972 while working for a Swiss travel agency that sent groups by bus to Rijeka, then by boat to Korčula, where I’d greet them. It was quite the adventure, especially since "my agency" was going bankrupt, leaving me with 80 travelers who’d already paid for their trip, Jadrolinija refusing to transport them without payment, and the buses seized... A long story, but also wonderful memories of Yugoslavia under Tito back then.

Thanks Agnès for this super detailed travel journal—it really brought back the nostalgia of past trips and made me want to go back! 🙂

To me, the overtourism issue in the Adriatic isn’t all that different from anywhere else: the most famous spots are packed, especially in summer, but there are often places just as beautiful just a few minutes’ drive away where hardly anyone goes. In Croatia, the islands are full of gorgeous spots that most people don’t visit. It’s the same in Italy—if you want to see Lake Como or Isola Bella in the middle of summer, you’ll have to deal with crowds, but if you go just a little further, there’s nobody (or it’s manageable).

Even in summer, the time of day makes a difference: I’ve been to Vintgar twice in July-August, and at 7:30 AM, it’s stunning and far from crowded. At 11 AM–2 PM, it’s way less enjoyable. Same goes for Dubrovnik in the evening.
AT Attila Globetrotter ·
Yeah, the overtourism issue is pretty much the same everywhere.😉

But in the Balkans, it’s way more recent than in Spain, France, Italy, etc.

That’s why I think now’s the time to head inland—you can still enjoy things peacefully without having to come up with crowd-avoidance strategies.😛
