Hi Peggy,

It’s either wear from the elements or wear on the paper!

Either way, I’m continuing your travel journal—you never know, maybe there’ll be a return trip. After all, every bit of info is useful.

J19 Saturday, July 25

Woke up leisurely around 8:00 AM and had breakfast at 9:00. While the hotel pool is absolutely fantastic, the breakfast could definitely use some improvement. That said, there was enough to eat, and at least they had waffles (which wouldn’t be the case the next day…).

We hit the road for Snow Canyon at 10:00 AM. The route we took took us through some gorgeous residential neighborhoods—mostly private communities where you’d need to show ID to get in. We could really see ourselves living there…

We paid the entrance fee for Snow Canyon ($6), which was valid all day, and crossed the park from south to north. Already some stunning views, even without going for a hike.

We still managed a short hike since we stopped at the Whiterocks parking lot, located past the exit booth (to the north), to check out the amphitheater.

After this short walk, we headed back the other way.

We only spent about an hour and a half in the park, but it was really hot around noon, so we planned to come back in the evening. Back in St. George. Some of us wrote postcards (about time! ;)), others read or went for a run before grabbing dinner at Jack in the Box. Then we spent the afternoon at the pool (we had it almost to ourselves, which wouldn’t be the case when we returned around 10:30 PM).

Warf, you hit "send my message" too fast...!

No, why??
PE Peggy16 Globetrotter ·
At first glance, your photos appeared as thumbnails, as if you had "sent" them without inserting them... I’ll delete my previous message... and I’ll delete this one too once you’ve read it...

Oh, no big deal, you could’ve left your message! 🙂 Actually, I *do* send my messages with the photos as thumbnails first, then I click edit to insert them into the text. The reason is simple: I have no idea why, but I struggled *a lot* at the start of this travel journal. Every time my posts were ready to send, VF would tell me there were JavaScript links and the message couldn’t be posted—even though I hadn’t inserted any links... 🤪 I tried everything: deleting spaces between photos, removing my text and putting it back afterward, etc. Sometimes it worked miraculously, and other times I’d struggle for over half an hour... I really don’t know what caused these issues, especially since this isn’t my first travel journal and I’ve never had these problems before. Anyway, I finally found a solution that works every time: send the message with the photos as thumbnails and insert them afterward. There you go, now you know everything! 😉

Continuation of Day 19, Saturday, July 25

We head back to Snow Canyon around 5:30 PM. We make our first stop at the Sand Dunes. The site is really pretty, but I can’t help rushing Yannick, who’s spending too much time taking photos for my liking. The sun is setting, and the shadows will appear well before the sun fully disappears since we’re surrounded by tall rocks.

We continue on our way

and park to start the Butterfly Trail.

We take a little detour to the overlook

then we stray a bit from the official trail to chase the last rays of sunlight still filtering through...

The sun did set really quickly, and we finish our walk with the Lava Flow Trail and along the road in the growing twilight.

We covered 4 km in 1 hour and 40 minutes. The falling night doesn’t stop us from eating our evening picnic at one of the wooden tables at the Sand Dunes area. We soak up the park’s atmosphere until the very last moment!

Back at the hotel, we try one last dip in the pool, but as mentioned earlier, it’s packed in the evening.

Hotel: Crystal Inn & Suites in Saint George, 90.10 € with breakfast Snow Canyon SP: $6 Day’s summary: Snow Canyon is truly a lovely little State Park—we’ll definitely come back someday!

Hi Valérie,

I almost missed your message! 😮 At the bottom of page 10 while I was only looking at page 11...

We had to do it twice to see everything. The first time, we didn’t know that further west of the site, there are magnificent yellow striations. I’d seen them in one of Philippe’s travel journals, I think, and afterward, I looked at my photos and saw nothing like that. After asking around, the second time was the charm. In the end, it’s great—it gives you a new goal for next time. :)

Could you tell me where exactly those yellow striations are, please? Since we *do* plan to go back to Paw Hale next year... 😎 Thanks in advance!

J20 Sunday, July 26

After the last breakfast of the trip included in the room price (which will be without waffles😞), we're off to Las Vegas. We head toward the Valley of Fire, but it's too hot at this time of day—we don’t feel like exploring this stunning park in the scorching heat. Plus, we already saw it last year, so we’ll save it for another time.

We decide to see what Lake Mead has to offer instead. But that wasn’t such a great idea! We arrive at Echo Bay Resort & Marina, expecting to find some life, people swimming, and maybe even some lakeside shops. But apart from a boat launch ramp, there’s absolutely nothing. The water level in Lake Mead is super low—so low that when we drive to the ramp, the GPS shows we’re driving *in* the water!!😮

We leave, hoping the next stop at Callville Bay Resort & Marina will be a bit nicer. And it is—here, a few people are swimming (you can see them in one of the photos), and there’s a small convenience store where we can grab something to complete our picnic, plus an ice cream for dessert. But more than food, the store is mostly stocked with boating supplies.

This little detour to Lake Mead wasn’t a success, so we decide to head to Las Vegas earlier than planned. We’re getting closer to the city.

We check in at our hotel, the Hilton Grand Vacation (Convention Center), around 2:30 PM instead of 4:00 PM. With no one ahead of us at the desk, they don’t mind that we’re an hour and a half early, and we’re given a room on the 17th and top floor—what more could we ask for?😊 The room is designed the same way as the hotel of the same name on the Strip, but this building is newer. We’re going to be living the high life for two days!

And here’s a sneaky photo of the pool I found online since we didn’t take one:
PE Peggy16 Globetrotter ·
Continuation of Day 20, Sunday, July 26

After settling into our room and freshening up in the pool, we head out around 5:30 PM toward the Strip. We’ve walked it a bit in previous years but never actually gone inside the Bellagio or the Cosmopolitan. That’s the goal for our little outing, though we didn’t expect to spend 4 hours on the Strip! Between going in and out of hotels, crossing pedestrian bridges in the middle of the crowd, checking out a few shops, and stopping to eat at a food court, time just flew by!

We parked at the Cosmopolitan’s self-parking. The hotel from the outside:

And a bit of the interior:

Then, as planned, we went to the Bellagio:

Here are some random shots of the Strip:

A classic at the M&M’s store:

The NYNY by day and night:

And the Bellagio at night:

When we get back to the car around 9:30 PM, we’re completely wiped out. Four hours in the city really takes it out of you! Especially once night falls and the crowds get bigger… We had no trouble getting back to our hotel because Yannick’s starting to know the back roads and avoids most of the traffic concentrated on the Strip. The bed was calling our names… 😉

Hotel: Hilton Grand Vacation Suites (Convention Center) in Las Vegas – 78.70 € Day’s recap: A flop at Lake Mead this morning, but we’re happy to be back in Las Vegas, which we’ve learned to enjoy in small doses…

The rest is here!

Snow Canyon is a bit like Valley of Fire (though my favorite is still the latter): easy access, beautiful viewpoints, and varied hikes. I really love the photos with that gorgeous sky and those lovely compositions. Especially the second one in the J19 series—stunning! Vegas is still Vegas: it’s a spectacle... And walking around there is almost more exhausting than hiking in the parks!

Not much really interesting left to tell, but I’ll still finish this travel journal...

Day 21 Monday, July 27

No alarm this morning. We leisurely have breakfast in our room—what a pleasure to prepare food with real dishes! 🙂

Then we leave the kids in the room and take the car to the nearby Circus Circus. The parking is free, but you have to walk quite a ways and take an elevator that’s nowhere near as classy as the one at the Cosmo we used yesterday! We head to the Tix4Tonight booth to see what they can offer us for tonight. I would’ve loved to see O, but they don’t perform on Mondays. I was hoping for a good deal to see Le Rêve again or discover Mystère. But for Le Rêve, I don’t think those are really promo prices—I would’ve paid less booking a seat in the splash zone online! So, Mystère it is! Now I just have to decide which ticket option to go for: the seller offers seats at $67.50 and others at around $85, but he can’t show me a seating plan. Not easy to decide under those conditions! The seller says we’ll be well-placed with the $65 seats, so I decide to trust him and buy two tickets for Calista and me.

Back at the hotel, a quick dip in the pool, then we take the car to the Bellagio. We’re meeting friends there—former neighbors from when we lived in Alsace. Our paths diverged when we moved to the Oise and they moved to Toulouse, and now they live in Boston. What luck! And here we are, running into each other in Las Vegas at the same time. We couldn’t miss the chance to enjoy a good buffet together! 😎 The wait to get to the cashier is long—over half an hour if I remember correctly. At the register, since we’re a table of 8, they automatically add an 18% tip. That brings our bill to $121 for four, but hey, we’ve eaten a lot of picnics and fast food during this trip so we could enjoy Vegas buffets! 😉

After the meal (outside around 3:30 PM), we head to the North Outlets where we pick up a few bargains, but not too many. I want a new handbag and can’t decide between Guess or Fossil… we’ll see tomorrow!

A little more pool time in the late afternoon, then Yannick takes Calista and me to Treasure Island to see Mystère. I stop by the desk to exchange my Tix4Tonight vouchers for the actual show tickets. On the ticket, it says $93.50, which doesn’t match the price Tix4Tonight charged me…

We have seats 7 and 8 in row B, section 104. I still have no idea where that is, but given the price I paid, I figured we’d be pretty far back… what a surprise when we realize we’re right up front, practically at the edge of the stage! 😎 I have no idea how I paid $135 for two seats that are nearly worth $300, but I’m thrilled! As for the show, I knew it wasn’t usually ranked at the top by those who’ve seen several, but I was pleasantly surprised. There are some really funny parts with the mischievous baby, some jaw-dropping technical moments, and a lot of poetry. Calista and I loved it! For Calista, she can’t decide which she preferred between Mystère and Kà, so she’s ranking them tied. For me, I still keep Le Rêve as number one, but Mystère comes in second, and Kà last.

Yannick picks us up on the 6th floor of Treasure Island’s parking garage, where he dropped us off two hours earlier. While we were at the show, they drove out of the city with Hugo and brought us back this lovely panoramic shot:

Hotel: Hilton Grand Vacation Suites (Convention Center) in Las Vegas 78.70 € Mystère Show: $135 (126 €) for two Day’s Summary: Las Vegas just the way I love it—a little pool time, some shopping, a great buffet, and an amazing show. Life is good on vacation!

Day 22, Tuesday, July 28

Today, according to the original plan, we were supposed to leave Las Vegas for Los Angeles. But despite searching for months, we couldn’t find a nice hotel for under 200 € to end the trip. We thought they were all super expensive for what they offered… and maybe deep down, we didn’t really want to go to LA after all. If our flight could’ve left from Las Vegas, that would’ve worked out perfectly for us! 😉

Anyway, we finally decided to stay one more night in Vegas because at least here, for the price, we get a great hotel! The trip to LA will happen tomorrow morning since our return flight is in the late afternoon. We booked a room at the Trump a week ago, taking advantage of a promo on Hotels.com.

This morning, we had to check out of the Hilton (super quick as usual), then we headed to the NYNY where Yannick and Hugo went all out on the roller coaster. They got the unlimited pass (the Scream Pass for $25 per person), which let them skip everyone in the line, and they did five runs in a row! Apparently, the coaster is really cool, but I won’t be trying it because someone has to stay with Calista, who isn’t a big fan of thrill rides yet… Plus, with age, I can handle the loops less and less!

While the guys were busy, we hung out at the arcade right before the coaster entrance and also went back to the Coca-Cola store to pick up some souvenirs.

Then we treated ourselves to our second buffet in Vegas, this time at the Wynn. Since there were only four of us, they didn’t automatically add the tip, so the bill was a bit less steep: $98.

After that, we checked in at the Trump. We’d booked the cheapest room available on Hotels.com—a double room. The front desk employee didn’t say anything (probably to let us be surprised) and just told us we were on the 49th floor. Awesome! 😎 And when we opened the door… the room was huge! It was actually a suite with a sofa bed in the living room,

a fully equipped kitchen (though without utensils, unlike the one at the Hilton),

a separate bedroom with an angled view,

a massive main bathroom,

and a second smaller bathroom. What a room to end our trip on a high note! We don’t regret staying in Las Vegas for one more night at all!

After exploring the room, we headed down to the pool. It was super nice too.

In the late afternoon, we took a quick trip to the south outlets, where I finally decided on a Fossil bag. Then we went back to the NYNY, where Yannick and Hugo did four more runs on the Big Apple Coaster—this time at night. Apparently, it’s even better with the view of the Strip lights! Calista and I stayed at the arcades again, but it wasn’t as fun as this morning—it was way too crowded.

We ended the day with a quick meal at the food court and then a soak in the jacuzzi in our room. The view was amazing…

Hotel: The Trump in Las Vegas 107.50 € (used a free night from Hotels.com) Day’s summary: This second full day in Las Vegas was packed and flew by, especially since we know tomorrow is the trip to Los Angeles and then back to France… We’re loving our beautiful suite, but we’re also a little sad as we go to bed…

The rest is here!
PE Peggy16 Globetrotter ·
J23 Wednesday, July 29

We had to set the alarm this morning to avoid leaving Las Vegas too late, since today’s drive is still a bit long… The sunrise colors from our room are gorgeous, and it’s with regret that we leave the hotel.

But before leaving the city, we make a quick stop at the Las Vegas Sign, which we still haven’t photographed despite three trips… There was always a long line before, but this morning at 7:30 AM, there’s no one!

We drive to Primm, where we stop around 8:00 AM to fill up on gas, then head to Peggy Sue’s 50’s Diner for a break just before 10:00 AM with breakfast. It’s still got that retro vibe!

After that, it’s an exciting drive to Los Angeles, with traffic getting heavier and ending in jams. 😕 We’d like to reach Santa Monica, but it’s packed everywhere, and at one point, we’re stuck on a ramp leading to a parking lot charging $12 for the day—no way to turn back. Sure, paying by the day is nice, but we only want to stay for 2 hours max, so that’s pricey! 🤪 When the attendant in her booth sees my disappointed face and hears me say we didn’t actually want to park here, she lets us pass the barrier without paying and exit. But what a waste of time!

We then head toward Venice Beach via Pacific Ave, scanning for parking. Either there’s no space, or it’s expensive. We finally find a spot along the road, almost across from the Venice Fishing Pier, paying by meter. But since we’re almost out of change, we leave less than $2 for about 1.5 hours. Our goal now is just to show the kids the Pacific Ocean and that’s it! Honestly, it feels like the last day—we’re not up for anything, and the traffic has really put us off…

We walk to the end of the pier, but it’s pretty dirty. Then the kids dip their feet in the water (and more…) before we head back the other way.

It must be around 3:30 PM when we finally stop at a fast-food place for our last meal on American soil. This morning’s breakfast was filling, but it feels like ages ago! After that, we find a post office to buy stamps for our postcards (otherwise, they’d have been sent from France—way less exotic! 😉), and we return the car to Dollar. We’d already gathered our things and checked for anything left in the doors or compartments while at the fast-food parking lot, which was lucky because once we’re in line at Dollar, everything moves fast. An employee scans the car’s code, walks around to check for damage, notes the mileage, and hands us a receipt. And that might be the toughest moment of the day… Letting go of this car we’ve loved for three weeks really hits home that the trip is over…

Then it’s a bus wait and off to the airport, where we arrive early (around 5:00 PM for a 7:40 PM flight), but it turns out not to be useless… We’re directed to self-service kiosks, where we easily print Yannick, Hugo, and Calista’s boarding passes—but mine won’t work. An American Airlines employee comes to help, but she can’t figure it out either and sends us to the counters. There, we have to wait in line. When it’s finally our turn, we spend over half an hour (maybe even more—I don’t remember) at the counter with three people trying to fix my issue! They never told us what the problem was, but from what they were saying, I suspect it was something to do with my birth name and married name. Next time I renew my passport, I’ll just stick with my birth name—it’s simpler!

After that, no issues at security, and we don’t have to wait too long in the departure lounge. Our flight is on time. The LAX-London leg goes smoothly, but as usual, I don’t sleep. The flight lands in London around 2:00 PM, and our next flight to Paris isn’t until 5:45 PM, so we have time to relax on the lounge chairs waiting for us at the gate… But as always, it’s the same ones who fall asleep (Yannick and Calista) and the same ones who can’t and read instead (Hugo and me).

The London-Paris flight with British Airways is super pleasant: the plane is only half full, they serve a little snack, and it flies low enough to enjoy the view from the window. We see the French coast coming into view, then fly over the countryside. Really nice!

And just like that, the trip comes to an end…

Day’s summary: If we had to do it over, I think we wouldn’t wake up at dawn to leave Las Vegas. We’d take our time before checking out of our lovely hotel room and head straight to the airport without trying to squeeze in any visits. Anyway, the few things we did today weren’t worth the time lost in traffic jams…

I forgot to tell you how awesome I think it is that you’re planning a few nights of camping for your next trip. I didn’t do that when my kids were young, and now it’s too late—there’s fierce opposition in the ranks 😠, which closes off some amazing opportunities...

Wishing you a very happy end to 2015.

Hi Peggy! So glad to see you here again! 😉

It’s been months since I’ve been around the forum much, and here I am, poking around again—what do I stumble upon? Peggy’s latest US travel story!!! I can totally see why, with airfare prices like that—it was too tempting! 😄 I’ve only just started reading, but I’m already diving into your adventures with pleasure. The US still has us dreaming too! Hope the whole family’s doing well. Any other trips planned for 2016? Wishing you a happy new year filled with more adventures!

Hi Virginie!

We’re heading to Indonesia (Bali and Lombok) in April.

I have friends who spent 3 weeks in Bali in July 2014, and they loved it. I don’t know Lombok, though.

For next summer, we still don’t know where to go.

Maybe you don’t know yet because you’re focused on your April trip… It’s not always easy to plan two trips at once! And it’s true that without stumbling on a deal, airfare isn’t exactly cheap…

Mind if we squeeze into your suitcases? 😉

You’ll have to make yourselves *very* small—we’ll already be packing the tent and sleeping pads! 😉

Here, the opposition didn’t come from the youngest ones...😉 But since I managed to convince him to give it a try, I’m hoping it’ll go well and he’ll grow to like it! 🙂

Hi Chloé,

I can see why those flight tickets were too tempting at that price! 😄

We got carried away again! Lol No, we're happy we gave in, but it's true it doesn't help with saving money! 😉

Any other trips planned for 2016?

Yes, still the West, with arrival and departure from Las Vegas this time.

we’ll already have the tent and mattresses to pack in! 😉

I can’t wait to read the story of your next trip to see Yannick’s reaction 😛 Who knows, he might just get a taste for it and switch to this type of accommodation for good!

Hi Peggy, and happy 2016! 😎

Here, the opposition didn’t come from the younger ones...😉

Yeah, I get it... When they’re young, kids usually love camping, but the problem comes as they get older... For the older ones, I’ve got the same as you at home. But he was willing to make the effort last year 😇. Though, I don’t think he would’ve grown to like it... 😏 Cheers, Laure

Hello!

Just finished reading your travel journal almost in one go! Lovely photos, as always. Calista has grown so much! And your kids are really brave—real little hikers! Thanks to you, I’ve discovered Paw Hole, Little Wild Horse, and White Sands. You’re making me seriously itchy to head back out West—I don’t know if I should thank you! 😏

Have you made any progress on your plans for next summer? I can’t wait to start planning another trip!!! I’m eagerly awaiting your future itinerary (well, if you feel like sharing, of course).

Hi Peggy,

A huge thank you for sharing this. I love your travel journals. They’re so enjoyable to read and beautifully illustrated. They’re among my favorites and have been really helpful for planning my upcoming road trip.

I’ll take this opportunity to wish you all the best for the new year. I think you’re heading off again next summer, camping this time.

See you later!

Hi Chloé!

Wow, I just read your travel journal almost in one go!

That’s the nice thing about discovering a journal once it’s already finished—you get the whole story in one piece. No need to go back to dive back in. I like it, but it does take time!😉

Lovely photos, as always. Calista has grown so much! And your kids are so brave—real little hikers!

Thanks for the photos—I’ll pass them on to the photographer, who’ll be happy to hear that! Yeah, we can’t complain about the kids—they walk well! Hugo’s even better than me, actually! Calista shouldn’t be far behind either, so soon *they’ll* be dragging *me* along...

Thanks to you, I’m discovering Paw Hole, Little Wild Horse, and White Sands. I’m seriously itching to go back to the West now—I don’t know if I should thank you!😏

You’re welcome...😛

Have you made any progress on your plans for next summer? I can’t wait to start planning another trip!!! I’m eagerly awaiting your future itinerary! (Well, if you want to share it, of course)

For our next trip, we’re going to limit the miles by focusing on this area: We’ve got a ton of things on our "wish list," but we’ll see depending on the weather and especially the car we get when we arrive. So the exact program will be in the next travel journal...😉

Have a great day!

Hi Christine,

A huge thank you for sharing this. I love your travel journals. They’re so pleasant to read and beautifully illustrated. They’re among my favorites. They’re really helpful for planning my upcoming road trip.

I’d already noticed you liked my journals since I see you quoting me now and then to new travelers in the West to give them tips...😉 It really makes me happy to see that my journals are useful and enjoyable to read—after all, we write for ourselves but also for others!

I’ll take this opportunity to wish you all the best for the new year. I think you’re heading off again next summer, camping this time.

Happy New Year to you too! Yes, it’s our first time camping this year, but we won’t overdo it... Yannick’s a bit nervous about it, so there’ll be more nights in hotels than camping !😉
HI Hiacinthe Globetrotter ·
Hi Peggy,

Camping has its advantages: you sleep in nature, and it's much cheaper than a hotel. My best memory was in the Canadian Rockies, when a herd of elk settled in the meadow where we were camping, just a few meters from our tent. I photographed the females and the calves until the male sounded the gathering call and they all galloped away.

We camped when we were in our thirties. Now, we’ve grown fond of comfort.

Anyway, if in addition to traditional camping on a designated site, you plan to bivouac, it opens up new possibilities when sleeping in the wild.

Yes, for a first time, it’s better to take it gradually, especially for your husband who doesn’t seem very enthusiastic.

Happy planning!

As for us, we’ll be following in your footsteps in some places next summer (southern Arizona, New Mexico... and the Page area for CBS).

Have a nice afternoon! !

Hi Christine,

Wishing you and yours an excellent year. I’m thrilled to see you’re heading back to the West next summer! We’ll have to put together a travel journal when you get back... 😉 Have a great day!

Hi Laure,

I also want to wish you and your loved ones all the best for the new year.

Yes, when I get back, I’m gonna start a travel journal. But my itinerary covers places a lot of people on this forum already know.

How about you? Any plans in the West this year?

Have a great afternoon!

Christine

Thanks Christine for your wishes.

But my itinerary revisits places well-known to many people on this forum.

No big deal! If we stopped at that, we’d never write another travel journal! Since you treat us to such beautiful photos in your replies, this will make a really lovely journal. I’m not putting any pressure on you here... 😏

And you? Do you have any plans for the West this year?

Yes 😊 And it’s coming up soon! Departing on February 20th for LV and returning via Phoenix—a short trip, but we managed to squeeze in one extra day compared to last February. Have a great evening
HI Hiacinthe Globetrotter ·
Wow, I’ll really need to focus on taking good photos this time! And we’ll absolutely have to be in the right place at the right time, with the sun cooperating—no hide-and-seek—because a sunset with clouds just isn’t the same. That’s exactly what happened to us in 2013 at Monument Valley. We’re giving it another shot in July, and this time, we’re staying at "The View."

"Leaving on February 20th for LV and returning via Phoenix—a short trip, but we managed to squeeze in one extra day compared to last February." You must be so excited to go. I assume your itinerary is all set. Hope you get great weather, like last year. I’ll be keeping an eye out for your travel journal—I’ll read it before my own trip to get inspired. We’re also flying back from Phoenix.

Have a great evening!

Hi Laure,

Leaving on February 20 for LV and returning via Phoenix, a short stay, but we managed to scrape an extra day compared to last February.

Can't wait to read the travel journal you'll definitely post when you get back!! 😛

We’re also dreaming of the West in winter or fall, but can’t decide on the best season. We’d love to explore New Mexico and revisit northern Arizona. What’s your itinerary for this new winter getaway?

Best wishes to you, Peggy, and everyone who contributed to that amazing travel journal!

Hello Peggy, As promised, I’m diving deeper into your travel journal! The Apache Trail was on our "Fall 2015" itinerary: We passed through some stunning landscapes we followed the Salt River I recognize all these spots (we did them in reverse order): a great tip, especially that long trail. We were lucky it was almost deserted—no dust as a result! 🙂 We really enjoyed going all the way up to Tonto, though. Again, no one around! We chatted a lot with the ranger, who gave us some great details about the site. I’ll keep reading! See you soon
