hi there,

about stripes (stripes).

The colorful geological "stripes" are essential to the natural appeal of the Colorado Plateau—imagine the Plateau in solid colors 😐! But stripes in general sometimes produce effects that go beyond aesthetics. The famous French architect-designer based in New York, MARC FORNES, seems to have drawn direct inspiration from a famous canyon when designing the work created for the 2017 International Exposition in Astana, Kazakhstan... let’s compare:

more details:

The Stripes Effect on Vimeo

also worth checking out:

Other stripes are pedological, and you can only truly appreciate them from above—from a plane, for example. They form when plows or other tools till and churn the soil. The Great Plains can produce interesting patterns, like in this photo taken by a real estate agent in the northeast corner of Kansas from a drone:

But it’s on the Llano Estacado, the High Plains of West Texas, where the palette is richest. In addition to the original hues, there’s the white of caliche, which develops irregularly from the bottom up in the soil. Combined with the green of irrigated areas by pivot, this creates an aesthetic that even scientists at the National Centre for Space Studies in Toulouse couldn’t ignore when they discovered photos from the Pléiades satellite a few years ago.

cnes | Agriculture in Texas: irrigation seen by the Pléiades satellite in O

This photo is from a plane in the same region:

Sometimes the results of plowing seem to wink a welcome to the French, like here on the Denver-Dodge City route, just before arriving:

Stripe is beautiful!

Yeah, it's easier than flying off with your bike (you don’t always have a friendly extraterrestrial on hand). Thanks for the reminder of this movie, which I still find pretty fascinating! This makes me think that *Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade* features shots of Arches National Park at the beginning, with the scout troop that young Indiana is part of.

(Photo isn’t great in terms of quality, but it was taken with a tired little compact camera)

Jean Paul, thanks for this super interesting post! And what stunning, amazing views. It’s a shame that humans are kind of messing things up with the planet, because the combination (humans and nature) could create such fascinating things... Well, if humans end up suffocating themselves in the future, the planet will still go on living and projecting its incredible creativity. It’s too bad we’re dragging other animal (and plant) species down with us—species that never asked for any of this...

Hi Fabienne. I agree with your reasoning. The planet will keep turning and living the day the human species disappears. Many other species have appeared, dominated the planet, and then gone extinct. Why would we be an exception to this rule? Unless our mastery of technology helps us last longer. Bernard.

The train robbery near DURANGO, scene from the 1969 film "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"

A town steeped in history, especially with the arrival of the steam train in 1881. From Durango, hop on board for a 3.5-hour journey to Silverton—a route that’s a real spectacle through the landscapes you’ll pass. But first, explore the charming town of Durango because in "Durango, everything is beautiful!" That’s what Philippe said as he stepped into the "Diamond Belle Saloon". In this Western-style bar with a stunning setting, a pianist plays "Old West" tunes, and the waitresses are charming in corsets and fishnet stockings. A real trip back in time.

Good evening Hiacinthe, Thanks for the photo. Be careful from the parking spot to the start of the area—you walk through brush on the ground, which are ideal hiding spots for rattlesnakes. JP came face-to-face with one. Trekking poles are a must.

Not far from there: Kannara Falls. Lucky for us, both ladders were in place.

Hi Gilles,

Is the path just as wide all the way to the rock formations?

Anyway, I’ll be extra careful because I just read there are quite a few rattlesnakes in the area.

Hi Christine. Rattlesnakes are everywhere in the West, the Midwest, and the Southwest of the United States, and from the Rio Grande to the Canadian border, there are of course different types, but they’re all dangerous. You always need to keep that in mind—it’s not the French countryside. Personally, when I’m out in nature, I prefer wearing pants over shorts. It’s basic protection.

CO Cochize Globetrotter ·
hi,

and from the Rio Grande to the Canadian border,

basically, that’s it, but to be a bit more thorough… in the north, the rattlesnake range spills over slightly into Canada.

You can find them in British Columbia as far north as Kamloops and in the Thompson Valley. I’ve seen one at 900 meters altitude in the forest.

In southeastern Alberta and even a bit of southwestern Saskatchewan, they’re also found in the Prairies.

Alberta’s situation is even a bit special: the rattlesnake appears on the coat of arms and insignia of an important military base where Canadians and Brits train with live ammunition.

In southern Ontario, there’s a magnificent one to see: the Massasauga rattlesnake

Hello Christine. There are rattlesnakes all over the western, central-western, and southwestern United States, and from the Rio Grande to the Canadian border. Of course, there are different types, but they’re all dangerous. You always have to keep that in mind—it’s not the French countryside.

Hello Bernard,

In desert areas, I think there are more of them than elsewhere. We saw one in the bushes while coming back from Lake Powell:

Yes, I know it’s not the French countryside. However, in France, you have to watch out for vipers (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vip%C3%A8re_aspic). That snake is dangerous too.

Personally, in nature, I prefer wearing pants over shorts—it’s basic protection.

I’m afraid that the fabric of pants isn’t enough protection against a rattlesnake bite.

Have a great afternoon!

Hi there. You're absolutely right—I've also traveled a lot in Canada. I mentioned the Canadian border because of the "American West" context, but of course, borders have never stopped wildlife. They’re also very present in Mexico. Bernard.

TI Titoualsace Veteran ·
True, it's a fine specimen. For basic protection, I was talking about loose-fitting pants—obviously not skinny jeans. Nothing's perfect, but if the bite happens through the fabric, it might lessen the impact and the amount of venom injected. Just my two cents. Cheers.
