Hi Jean-Luc,

My vacation period will definitely be July-August, since we’re both teachers, and I love it when it’s cold. Thanks for your reply.

The Didima you're talking about—is that Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, Didima Resort?

Here’s an angelic overview! As for the water carrier, just know I was simply adapting to local customs and traditions 😛. Knowing how to observe and keep the best !

Uh, good evening Guillaume....

The overall view of the Lodge is stunning.

But it's weird, she looks just like Laeticia!!! Or did you find a perfect copy over there? Hmmmm????

Saint Laeticia... pray for Guillaume, who’s making things worse with every post!😏😄

Don’t worry! It’s not Laetitia....... but my daughter Rachel 😎😏😏, who’s the spitting image of her mom! Monday morning, social services knocked on my door 🤪

But actually, why is she carrying water on her head? Wasn’t there any at your lodge?

We’d gone hiking in Rainbow Gorge. She was so in her own world trying to balance that bottle (which was practically empty) on her head that she ended up having to carry it the whole way.

Hi Anne,

Thanks for the info on Thendele camp. I’ll have to choose between the two...🤪

Hi Diamina,

I’ll have to choose between the two....

Or visit both. They’re relatively close to each other but offer very different landscapes. At Thendele, you can see the famous "Amphitheatre".
MI Michel85200 Globetrotter ·
Hi...

Actually, Michel was an archangel... in all modesty.

The latest travel journal on Lesotho really shows how amazing this country can be to visit. It’s a real goldmine. Plus, his itinerary is very well thought out, and he’s a great storyteller.

Also, unlike me, the weather was much more cooperative for him.

Things have changed a lot there since my visit, especially when it comes to the roads.

The one our storyteller describes as a bit more challenging... was a highway in "my" time.

Lesotho reminds me of KwaZulu-Natal 20 years ago...

Between Thendele and Didima, there's no contest.

Didima. 😛

After that, my favorite will still be the Mountain Lodge at Golden Gate. 😛😛😛

The upper camp at Giant's Castle is gorgeous too.

If you're craving cold and snow, the Mountain Lodge has the best chance of putting on a show given its altitude...

By "visit," do you mean stay overnight in each?

Ah!! We can tell you're an expert!!!!! Well, yeah, I didn’t dare take my idea all the way, but I *really* thought it. So: hail, Archangel Saint Michael!!!!😏😏

Well, Guillaume, you’re going to be my inspiration with the blessing of Archangel Saint Michael!!😏

Hi Ma Tila,

After all, my favorite will still be the Mountain Lodge at Golden Gate.

Could you share a link, please? Is this the one?

I can't find it on Google Maps.

Hey Diam'!

Yes, that's the one! 😛

You can find it here.

Since it doesn’t seem like you’re really into hiking, I think Giant Castle, Didima, and Golden Gate Highlands are good choices for you.

You should also like the trails. The one from my latest travel journal that follows the Drakensberg to the foot of Sani Pass, as well as the one described here between Didima and Thendele.

It’s very rural with scenes of daily life—nothing touristy at all. Much better than the pavement, even if it takes longer...
SI Simc4 Veteran ·
Hi Diamina,

Yes, sleeping in each of them, right in the heart of the mountains. But there are still others in the Drakensberg. I also really like Golden Gate National Park in the same area. And Michel can recommend others to you. In short, there’s plenty to do in the Drakensberg. And if you add Lesotho to the mix, you could easily make a whole trip out of it.
DI Diamina Globetrotter ·
Hi Jean-Luc,

In short, there’s plenty to do in the Drakensberg, And if you add Lesotho to the mix, we could easily make it a full trip.

Yeah, that’s exactly the impression I get... There’s so much to do.🤪

And then after crossing Lesotho, you can head to Mountain Zebra NP ...😛
DI Diamina Globetrotter ·
Okay, I took 2 years to prepare for my first trip to South Africa, so I think I’ll give myself the same amount of time for the second one, planning it for July-August 2021.

I now know why your travel journal didn’t grab me: you were there during a time when everything was green, which doesn’t appeal to me at all. Whereas Guillaume was there when the landscapes were golden—that’s a whole different story. 😄

Should I head to Mountain Zebra National Park before going to the Drakensberg?

The logic would be starting from Joburg, then Drakensberg, Lesotho, and Mountain Zebra.

which doesn’t appeal to me at all

After that, you could continue to the Great Karoo (Karoo NP, Tankwa, Cederberg...). It’s not very green when it *is* green, so definitely not in winter! !😉

Tourist critically injured by giraffe in Kruger National Park dies in hospital

The Swiss tourist who was in critical condition after a giraffe fell on top of a safari vehicle at Kruger National Park on Sunday has died, SANParks said.

On Sunday, News24 reported that a taxi carrying visitors was involved in an accident south of Mopani. According to SANParks spokesperson Ike Phaahla, the taxi hit the giraffe, and it fell on top of the safari vehicle that was following the taxi. The vehicle was carrying two Swiss nationals.

The driver of the vehicle was injured and taken to the hospital after being stabilized at the scene. Two people in the taxi were treated for minor injuries. On Wednesday, Phaahla confirmed to News24 that the tourist had died from his injuries.

"We would like to convey our sincere condolences to the family during this difficult time." Phaahla added that the incident was being investigated by the police.

For giraffe lovers... still, be careful!

(from News24, Kruger news for photos...)

When a giraffe falls, it falls from high up! !

How could you possibly miss a giraffe 😜!? Or maybe the taxi wasn’t even going 50 km/h 😕
BO Bof Veteran ·
Or else the taxi was far from going 50 km/h 😕

When you read that the collision with the taxi sent the giraffe flying onto the rental car, it seems pretty likely. 🙁

On the other hand, some reactions on the park’s Twitter ("hang him," referring to the taxi driver) are really chilling. 😐

And here’s another travel journal resurfacing… Nostalgia when contributors talk about their plans for 2020 or 2021… Tons of info is still relevant for future travelers
