Hi there,

We’re planning a trip to Finland and Norway this summer, starting in Oulu to explore Lapland, heading up to the North Cape, and then making our way down to Bergen.

This route means renting a car in Finland and dropping it off in Norway. My initial searches are showing rental rates that are... astronomical—about three times the price compared to returning it at the starting point.

I’m guessing I’m not the only one wanting to visit both countries. Are there any great tips to drastically reduce the cost of renting a car?

Hello, We’re heading to Finnish Lapland near Rovaniemi as a family at the end of February with two kids (8 and 14 years old). We’ve got direct flights with Luxairstours. The itinerary is already set, but I’m wondering if anyone has traveled with Luxair before and knows exactly what kind of clothes they provide on the second day? The agency just told me it’s a heavy-duty cold-weather suit. I’m thinking we should get Sorel Caribou boots, maybe second-hand. Here’s what I’ve already planned: - Thermolactyl leggings and tights from Damart for the whole family as a base layer. - A first layer of Damart socks + Nordic Stocks socks in 70% merino wool for all four of us. - Loose fleece layers, including some Polartec. - Ski pants for hikes. - For my son and me, a The North Face Himalayan down parka with a hood. - A ski parka for my husband and my 14-year-old daughter (she *really* wants a Roxy one—I hope it’ll be warm enough). - For myself, for the flight and the first day at Santa’s village, I’ve packed The North Face winter hiking pants, a long-sleeve merino wool top from Decathlon (thin), a fleece, and my big parka.

I’m wondering if I should just pack fleece joggers or sweatpants for the kids and my husband, at least for the first and last days, to be comfortable on the plane? I’m also planning to buy balaclavas and neck warmers in addition to our beanies, as well as mittens for all of us. I really need advice because I have no idea—I’ve never been skiing! Also, for a 4-night, 5-day trip, should I pack a second set of base layers, like from Odlo?

Of course, I’ll be leaving cotton clothes out of the suitcase.

As you can tell, I’m someone who gets cold easily—especially my feet, hands, and ears—so that’s my biggest worry. I *don’t* want to be cold, even at -20°C during dog sledding, snowmobiling, or aurora hunting when we might be standing still. We won’t be in the city, and the kids will likely spend most of their time outside, as they usually do.

We’re planning a week-long trip to Finnish Lapland in February 2026 with two kids aged 7 and 4.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time browsing websites and this forum, but I still have a few questions left.

We’ll be landing in Rovaniemi but won’t be staying there, so we’re planning to rent a car. Do you have any recommendations for rental companies? Is a Golf-sized car sufficient, or should we opt for something better suited to the conditions?

I found some nice accommodations near Akaslompolo. Is the area nice? Are there restaurants, shops, etc.? If it were just me, I’d go for total isolation, but I’m not alone 😎 If not, do you have any alternatives within a 2-hour radius of Rovaniemi? I’d also spotted Luosto.

We’re planning the classic activities: - Visiting a reindeer farm (but no sled ride); - A dog-sledding excursion; - Ice fishing; - A few evenings hunting for auroras using our car and a dedicated app; - A day in Rovaniemi for Santa Claus Village, the Arctic Museum, and the small Ranua Zoo; - An ice hockey game; - And maybe a day of skiing.

Do you have any recommendations for activity providers?

What kind of clothing layers do you recommend for the kids at this time of year?

Is the amethyst mine in Luosto worth it? I think the prices are over the top and can’t figure out why… Maybe there’s a good reason?

I’m starting to plan our summer 2025 trip. We’ll be traveling as a family (2 adults and 2 teens), most likely in mid-July. Here’s a first draft of our itinerary. I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether this 15-day route is doable. We’ll be renting a car in Rovaniemi.

- Rovaniemi (2 nights) - Jokkmokk (1 night) - Kiruna (1 or 2 nights???) - Narvik (1 night) - Lofoten Islands (3 or 4 nights???) - Bodø (2 nights) - Return through Sweden, but where to stay between Bodø and Luleå to break up the drive????? (1 night) - Luleå (1 or 2 nights???) - Return to Rovaniemi (1 night)

What do you think of this route? I’m open to all suggestions—whether there are places to add, remove, or adjust. Thanks in advance for your help!

Bonjour à tous, J’ouvre cette discussion en espérant que certain pourront m’aider . A partir de mai 2021 , je pars faire un tour d’Europe d’environ 9 mois :) Mais faire l’itinéraire n’est pas simple .. il faut considérer plusieurs facteurs, et c’est la que j’ai besoin de votre aide :) Le problème est que ça nous fait arriver dans les pays du Nord ( Finlande suede norvege ) en décembre ( ou en novembre si on fait quelques changements) A la base c’est ce qu’on voulait pour fêter noël en Laponie . Mais on se rend compte que c’est peut être pas la meilleure idée avec un camping car à cause des températures ... que le ciel est pas très dégagé en décembre ( aurores boréals..) , et que la nuit dure toute la journée ... je veux absolument pas gâcher cette partie du voyage qui je pense est magnifique.

Certain d’entre vous ont ils été amené à y être à cette période également ? En camping car ? Que me conseiller vous

Je suis en Laponie avec mon van aménagé jusqu'à fin septembre. Aucun programme de prévu. Connaîtriez-vous des endroits à ne pas manquer, des endroits cachés (genre cascades, formations géologiques, ...). Les parcs nationaux offrent-ils des paysages variés ? Pour le moment, je suis dans la région de Rovaniemi pour un peu de bénévolat mais je vais monter vers le nord ensuite. Le nord semble être un peu plus vallonné même si il n'y a pas toute la diversité qu'on peut trouver en Norvège. J'espère bien me faire plaisir.

J'ai beaucoup de mal à préparer un circuit de 20 jours au départ d’Helsinki jusqu'en Laponie (nous partirions le 1er septembre à condition de le pouvoir bien sûr ^^)

Il n'y a pas énormément de carnets de voyage et lorsque j'en trouve, les destinations ne sont jamais les mêmes et je suis donc un peu perdue pour organiser l'itinéraire.

Nous sommes déjà aller à Kittila passer le réveillon en 2016 : ce fut un coup de coeur ! et nous avons décider d'explorer ce pays l'automne étant amoureux bien évidemment de la nature et des animaux. L'idée de dormir dans un chalet au bord d'un lac serait tout simplement magique !

et peut on bivouaquer éventuellement quelques fois ?

Nous lourions donc une voiture à Helsinki (en y restant 2 jours).

Pourriez vous m'aider et me donner les incontournables des parcs ou lacs à ne pas manquer sur la route jusqua'u nord .. nous resterions 2 jours à chaque étape à peu près.

Nous avons pensé à la location d'un camping car mais nous ne pourrions alors faire l’expérience de loger dans chalet ..

Mon fils a réservé une voiture à l'aéroport de Kittyla. Son permis date de 1977 ( pas de date de validité indiquée). J'ai consulté le site service-Public.fr permis de conduire et les licences délivréesavant 2013 sont valables jusqu'au 19 janvier 2033. Avez-vous été dans ce cas lorsque vous avez réservé une voiture en Finlande? Nous avons réservé chez Hertz; je pense que l'agence locale doit être au courant. Merci. Chabcha

Je planifie avec mes amis un voyage en Finlande cet été. Notre objectif est de faire un périple à vélo de Oulu jusqu'à Helsinki. Nous nous posons plusieurs questions à ce sujet : Est ce que ce voyage semble faisable compte tenu des routes / hébergements / difficulté... ? Y a t-il un chemin à privilégier plutôt qu'un autre ? De préférence nous préférons éviter les côtes. Est il possible de louer des bons vélos à Oulu et les rendre à Helsinki ? Quel est le budget à prévoir ?

N'hésitez pas si vous avez des recommandations à me faire sur ce projet :)

D'après leur, site, la ferme serait située à 10kms de Luosto.Le guide s'appelle Vera. Aucune réponse à ce jour. Si vous aviez fait cette activité à cet endroit, vos informations me seraient très utiles. J'avais contacté l'office de tourisme de Sodankyla qui ne connaît pas cette ferme.
